Dear Geveret Smith,

I am writing to address some concerns that you expressed in your letter about the class #holiday activities held over the past week.

First of all, I want to express that our #PublicSchool loves ALL our #students.

1/x
We have a #diverse #student body, we hold #diversity training every year, and we prioritize being good #allies to our #Christian students.

2/x
Naturally, we were surprised to receive such a long list of complaints from you about our #winter #holiday #programming, considering that we go so far out of our way to accommodate our #Christian students.

Cult recruitment: In order for ‘cults’ to be successful they rely on ‘recruiting’ others. They target ‘vulnerable’ isolated, alone, neglected children or adults. For vulnerable people, #cults are very tempting because the cult provides love-Bombing #stage1
A sense of safety, promises of rewards friends & actual rewards. Who could possibly refuse? They typically use becoming more joyful, happy, obtaining bliss as a #promise Who wouldn’t want that? A new family? #Acceptance? Love? It’s a nice loving supportive environment initially
#stage2 Cults are now online. Recruitees may be constantly bombarded by cult jargon new #language new wording The group expects recruitees to divulge everything about Themselves. Those recruited usually have #epiphany of some sort which drives them further into the cult #stage3

A #thread for #AutismAcceptanceWeek
#AutismAcceptanceMonth
Things #employers need to know, from a personal, very late diagnosed, #ActuallyAutistic perspective, with insights from career roles in organisational development and employment support.
#autism
#careers
#employment
1/
The first thing to consider is how to involve existing #autistic #employees.
These are the people with lived experience of being autistic in your workplaces.
How can you make it safe for them to share their experiences?
How can you value their expertise?
Why does this matter?
2/
Autistic people are used to being sidelined and marginalised, and being spoken over and ignored.
If employers are serious about #autism #inclusion in the workplace they need to fix this.
Some autistic employees may not even have disclosed for fear of stigma or discrimination.

We are exploring the distinction between #unity and #uniformity...
हम #एकता और एकरूपता के बीच के अंतर पर गौर कर रहे हैं...
The distinction between seems to be in each word's relationship with #tolerance and #acceptance.
जहां तक हमे दिखता है, दोनों शब्दों के बीच का अंतर सहिष्णुता और स्वीकृति के साथ उनके संबंध में पता चलता है।
#Uniformity is about being alike, with less room for our #differences. We can see that it has relevance in some places, such as setting up structures for organising things.

(@manijadegarcia) #Streamlining & #sporulation thread here, discussing ideas for survival, stress management, joy & healing using the acronym ACCESS to organize the ideas.

Almost out of spoons for the day so I'll discuss each briefly & we can keep discussing on my page

[QT]
1/
(@manijadegarcia) Thinking about our survival; stress management; healing; & joy as #DisabledPeople I am immediately concerned about the levels of exhaustion & lack of access & safety for many of us to engage in #acceptance, #compassion, #community, #epistemology fully.

2/
(@manijadegarcia) For example, Zoom fatigue is real & it bothers me how exposed vulnerable people are who come to social media for connection—since social media is run by the very people deeply invested in maintaining settler colonialism & its reliance on #epistemicide.

(@manijadegarcia) #Epistemology thread here, discussing ideas for survival, stress management, joy & healing using the acronym ACCESS to organize the ideas.

While I take a break I'd love you to read my new related article with @sisterSTEM

Link: sisterstem.org/2021/10/18/gat…

[QT]
1/
(@manijadegarcia) #Epistemology refers to to 'how we know what we know.' #Epistemologies are systems of knowledge & knowing informed by the ways different groups of people navigate & make sense of the world & are related to what we justify based on what's "true" or "real."

2/
Who we are shapes our experiences & therefore our reality. So #disabled people; #women; #BlackPeople; etc. all have their own #epistemologies. Like languages, groups can borrow from each other's epistemologies to build knowledge & make meaning of the world & their lives.

(@manijadegarcia) #Community thread here, discussing ideas for survival, stress management, joy & healing using the acronym ACCESS to organize the ideas.

Some ?'s I'd love us to delve into: (1) how do we use technology to build community in more accessible & safe ways?
[QT]
1/
(@manijadegarcia) (2) COVID-19 taught us that we have the relatively inexpensive digital tools to build more accessible virtual & blended (virtual + in-person) spaces for creating #community. But tools don't build community, we have to! So how do we do that most effectively?

2/
(@manijadegarcia) (3) How can we utilize #acceptance #compassion & the tools we have to build interconnecting #communities as disabled people with intersecting identities? For example, how do we make people with "psychotic" or "personality" symptoms feel more welcomed?

(@manijadegarcia) #Compassion thread here, discussing ideas for survival, stress management, joy & healing using the acronym ACCESS to organize the ideas.

Be back after a break to dig in! 🥰

[QT]

1/
(@manijadegarcia) #Compassion to me is like creating welcoming, gentle internal space for the things I am #accepting—so I can be curious instead of judgemental about them. I'm reminded of indigenous views of trauma as "wisdom" & a "teacher," that can lead us to healing.

2/
(@manijadegarcia) #compassion & #acceptance are closely related in my experience, like a bi-directional positive correlation, (increasing either can increase the other—try not to get hung up on stats "rules.") & #SelfCompassion is super powerful for general #MentalWellness.

🧵(@manijadegarcia) Whew, responding to the twitter chat from yesterday stirred up a lot for me. After a break I will return to discuss some ideas for survival, stress management, joy & healing. I used the acronym ACCESS to organize the ideas.

(@manijadegarcia) #Acceptance is a key feature of many eastern belief systems (e.g. #Buddhism & #YogaPhilosophy) & shows up in some Western therapies (e.g. #mindfulness #ACT & #RadicalAcceptance in #DBT).

Acceptance has many layers that apply to #MentalHealth & #Disability

2/
(@manijadegarcia) Important point: #acceptance does NOT mean to agree with or like something. It's about doing your best to accept the REALITY of something, including the emotions it may stir.

Acceptance may not always feel good, but I have found it to be good for me.

Hey #furry friends! Let's talk about #pride, LGB, LGBT+ and adjacent groups.

In June 1970, Brenda Howard, a bisexual New Yorker, organized the first Pride, in response to the Stonewall raids in 1969.

Her purpose was to express the notion that she - and everyone - should (1/9)
be able to love who she/they want to. She believed that, as long as there is no harm, that no one has the right to persecute or judge another based on the nature of their love.

Recently, a #gay man was bullied out of a #Pride parade because he was wearing a t-shirt of an (2/9)
organization that specifically focuses on LGB rights and equality. This is really troubling and is just one example of a problem I've seen numerous times, not just as a #furry within the #furryfandom, but more widely.

You simply cannot pick and choose. Pride, by definition (3/9)

This is going to be one of my most important threads.

By far the best book I have read in a long long time.
One can simply begin from any page, for each note makes so much sense that we get lost in them , sometimes chuckling & often amazed .

Here are MY learnings from
" A Book of Simple Living" by Ruskin Bond.
2/22
The book is enriched with life lessons . Most profound of all for me being ,

#Life is simple despite all its hardships and complexities .
For the purpose of life is to live ....

Now, how we choose to live our life makes it simple or complicated.
3/22

Do we chase #happiness by climbing infinite mountains in the quest for fame & wealth or do we savour the goodness in the little things that often come our way but go unnoticed and unappreciated by us ?
For ultimately , " It is the little things that matter the most ".

You gotta accept it first before you can fix it. Most people never accept, they find it difficult too. Ego, pride, hurt, the why me attitude etc. That’s what keeps you stuck as a victim.
When you are a victim, you can’t take action because you constantly crave for sympathy, pity, validation etc.
We must first accept what has happened. Then we rise above and do everything to fix it. You gotta accept it first before you can fix it!! It all starts with acceptance and letting or letting go …Gracefully....

1/3 Vulnerability.

I feel I am in a place to speak out, but it still involves opening up to uncertainty. Yesterday I added the @ChildlessWeek frame to my personal facebook profile, as I wanted to show my support and add my voice to making our invisible grief visible. Image
2/3 I received positive responses, but still a fragility resonates inside - something my wife pointed out as making myself vulnerable. I view this vulnerability as part of taking risk, part of growth, part of healing. So here I am, vulnerable and ok.

2/ It is @ChildlessWeek in September & I have contributed to it over the past couple of years. By sharing my experiences I have found connection, I have been heard & found a sense of belonging. The process of creating stories & art, has been helpful in my healing & acceptance.
3/ I recommend submitting your experiences, they can be anonymous - the more our voices are heard, the less invisible we become, not only to others, but also ourselves.

1/ Making new memories.

Arnside Knott is a local hill, a place we have walked together, with friends, with family. I place I have run alone, and with friends. It is layered in memories of my, of our, childlessness journey and grief. It is part of the way of the dead. Image
2/ It is where we walked one Catmas day. It is where we have mourned. It is where I have exhausted myself running. Running away from my grief, running to process it and running to remember our lost children. Last week we returned and took a different route,
3/ following our curiosity we stumbled upon a deer at the top, and a walled garden on our return. I didn't feel haunted by my past and removed. I felt connected to my wife, to us, and the beautiful nature around us. It is a new step with my acceptance of a childless life.

Thread:
1. Today I unfollowed a female person whom I have enjoyed following for years on Twitter. I will refer to her as EM. I have not always agreed with everything EM says. Since I love the men in my life I would often marvel at her extreme contempt for ALL men as a category.
2. At the same time, I felt that EM offered a unique voice on feminism – a prolific author and journalist whose lived experience spans Western and Middle Eastern worlds. There were many truths she would speak on the plight of women that had merit and that I needed to consider.
3. How deeply disappointing to witness EM now openly at war with a huge sector of the female population. I see her calling women the worst slurs available with a ferocity rarely expressed towards men.

Top Ten Reasons Adults without Autism Deserve AMA (Applied Misbehavior Analysis)

1. ABA is a marketing campaign built around controlling behaviors. It stifles freedom of thoughts and removes autonomy, innovation, self-determination, and creativity.
2. AMA seeks to validate each person's individual strengths, accommodate their disabilities, and provide for them a set of circumstances wherein they can thrive to meet their full potential.
3. ABA reinforces behaviors undertaken in the interest of "social consequence." Those social norms go unquestioned and maintain the status quo. The status quo maintains dominant power structures and keeps minority populations marginalized.

I don't usually pin tweets. Certainly not personal ones.
But this one is pinned and it's personal because #Neurodiversity is a real thing in my life and probably yours, too, whether you know it or not.
I'm talking generally now about #ActuallyAutistic #ADD #ADHD + so many others.
This is a thread, a single story only, about one person's relationship with #Neurodiversity

I did a thing I don't usually do. I talked about my personal relationship with it at a thing. I didn't plan it. As many life-changing things tend to do --> it just happened.

(2/n)
Before we go too far tho it's very important we establish that this is only a single story. There are many voices that need to be heard.

The values are attached as a pdf to the job description linked above. Here’s the direct link: turing.ac.uk/sites/default/…

Before I dig into them I want to give a quick shout out to Georgia Aitkenhead who wrote the first draft based on our long conversations. THANK YOU Georgia!
The values are only loosely ordered. Don’t read too much into which ones come first etc. They’re ALL important.

When you apply for the job PLEASE address the values in your cover letter. It’s an essential requirement that you have a commitment to these values.

#OSHO

Start with #desire.

One has to begin with desiring something that cannot be achieved by desiring. But if you are aware of this fact - if you are aware of the fact that you are desiring something that cannot be desired - it helps. At any moment, you can take the #jump.
With the #mind we cannot understand anything which is effortless. Mind means effort. The faculty of the mind is to do something; it is an instrument for doing. The very faculty of mind is to #achieve something, to gain some desire.
You cannot begin with no #desiring. The mind will make this non-desiring also the desired object.

The mind will create new desire and say, “Okay, I will try not to desire.” It will say, “Really, it looks fascinating. I will try to do something so that this no desiring happens.”
