#lableak tweets

A few observations:

1⃣ Lableakers have no response to explain the #evidence layed out by the work of Worobey/Pekar et. al. for a market origin

(here is a nice summary from @angie_rasmussen explaining key details 🔽 )
1/
2⃣ As with previous important publications about the origins topic, the first response from #conspiratorial thinkers is to ridicule, downplay and denigrate the studies and scientists involved (with absurd falsehoods and ad hominems)

2/
We have seen this pattern before, directed at independent scientists who contributed to the origins literature; and there are many

The goal of these personal attacks is to make life miserable for scientists who speak out, to get them to shut up or leave social media completely

We tend to talk about bats as if they were all identical in appearance, habitat, and habits. But that’s far from the truth.

@Cori_Lausen, @wcscanadabats director, talks about 4⃣ Western Canadian #bats in @ecofriendlywest: tinyurl.com/4prrnkk2 🧵
1⃣. Spotted Bats have black fur with 3 large white spots on their rump and shoulders as well as smaller white patches at the base of their pink ears, which are as long as their body. They are found in dry desert regions of the southern #Okanagan and are extremely rare. (cont'd)
Unlike many other bats, the Spotted Bats’ echolocation sounds can be picked up by the human ear as they are typically producing sounds as low as 7-12 kilohertz that sound like a series of clicks.

*Tamanaviruses* - a primer (medium thread)
(1) Tamana bat virus (TABV) is a highly divergent #flavivirus that was isolated in 1974, from a bat trapped at the exit of Tamana cave, on the North slope of Trinidad's Mount Tamana. Image
(2) TABV was identified at the Trinidad Regional #Virus Laboratory (TRVL) as part of a post-war virus discovery effort lead by the Rockefeller Foundation.

The #Tamana cave system comprises several large limestone caverns and is a roost for several species of bat. Image
(3) Millions of bats fly out of Tamana cave exits to feed at dusk, making for an impressive spectacle.

Researchers at TRVL trapped #bats at cave exits, took samples from these bats and attempted to cultivate viruses. Image

Happy New Year's Eve! To end 2020 & prep us for the New Year, I'm excited to talk today about one of my favorite bat topics:

How YOU can help #bats! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🦇🦇🦇🦇

#BatTwitter #BatConservation
[Tweet by @BatsForLife]
Why do we need to help #bats? ~1/3 of bat species worldwide are endangered, vulnerable, or "data deficient" (i.e. more conservation attention is needed for the species). That's a lot of species that need our help!
