Been reminded of this thread while juggling around the thesis that: the indifference + stiff upper lip necessary to meet it and to function in world, so stereotypical and continually under attack, is merely prep and training for fatherhood...

Good for @Spotify standing up against #bullying. This is an important gesture on #BellLetsTalk day.

Unfortunately @NeilYoung has decided to leave. It’s his right to control his own music. It’s not his right to censor another entertainer and artist, @JoeRogan

My Facebook and Instagram is ALIVE with bad and maddening takes, so I'm going to park here and celebrate #BellLetsTalk day by tweeting about Taylor Swift everytime I feel like spewing a hateful and angry opinion.
So until I sign off for the night, whenever you see a Queen Taylor tweet from me, just knowing that I'm battling my worst, innermost demons, and trying to deal with it the best way I know how.
Taylor Swift came alive for me when she released Fearless, both the album and the song. The melodic earworms of that whole album had this 21 year old boy completely captivated
Hey Stephen? Love Story? Fearless? You Belong With Me? Absolute heart vibes.

1/ #BellLetsTalk Time for another 🌶🧵. Today, this personally cuts deep. 6 weeks of unpaid leave from nursing. Colleagues short-staffed and struggling through outbreaks in fully vaxxed settings, yet I sit at home robbed of my identity. My career. Over one “choice.” BNRN.
2/ #BellLetsTalk The sudden white-knight virtue signalling of those in power that have locked down their citizens and restricted them for two years right now is nauseating. Ex: here’s Doug Ford talking about mental health after closing gyms for a YEAR. All in this together?
3/ #BellLetsTalk about what losing a career or business does to your mental health. Let’s talk about how our covid tunnel vision has led to trickle-down mental damages that will be felt for YEARS to come. Let’s look at some of the academic evidence. 800,000 suicides every year.

Wow, incredible.

The OPPOSITE of what is actually occurring (NON-EXPERTS scaremongering using inaccurate data on suicides, and selective citation science that is shoddy & poorly reported) to justify OPENING schools.

Nobody is taking position that "SCHOOLS MUST BE CLOSED"
/1
In my advocacy, I don't just discuss suicides, I discussed the state of the evidence globally including incident rates of eating disorders, depresison, anxiety, and suicide.

/2
In all of that, my position is clear: schools should be last to close and first to open. School is good. But closures, whenever necessary, are likely less harmful to kid's mental health than anything the pandemic is doing to our kids (orphanhood, worries about illness).

🧵#BellLetsTalk about the devastating social contagion of adolescent-onset gender dysphoria that is currently sweeping the globe. How a rare condition that once afflicted predominantly boys starting in early childhood now affects mostly girls and the onset is sudden at puberty./1

This week will mark the first #bellletstalk day since I have moved from Canada to the US. Now that I have begun a new chapter I want to share the story of the past 10 years of fighting for change in Canada. Buckle your seatbelts…this is a long thread 🧵
I grew up idealizing Canadian healthcare. I trained/worked in different countries yet moved back to Canada 10 years ago expecting something better than what I found. The truth is that Canadian decision makers have systematically neglected/underfunded mental health for decades. /1
I have witnessed the horrible consequences of a system that is built on a foundation of prejudice and discrimination against people with mental illness. I worked in busy inpatient units and emergency departments and watched those suffering offered blame instead of empathy. /2

I've written extensively about my own experiences of depression and anxiety in my book, "A Mind Spread Out On The Ground." In the title essay, I compare depression to the effects of colonialism. Since it's #BellLetsTalk, I want to talk more about what I call colonial depression.
I've tried therapy on and off for many years, and while I've found some CBT helpful, I want to point out the inherent problems involved in CBT and, to an extent, the mindfulness movement - both of which have become incredibly Westernized and are used to try to help depression.
CBT, or cognitive behavioural therapy, is a form of therapy that works based on the premise that how we think about and interpret the events in our lives affects how we feel, so if we train ourselves to think differently about the events in our lives, we can change our moods.

It is #BellLetsTalk ...so let’s talk. Have you ever responded to the question “how are you doing?” with a “fine” or “good” even though you really weren’t fine or good?! I know I certainly have.
While every time you are asked it may not be a great time to delve into what is going on I challenge you and myself to be courageous enough to answer how you are really doing. Especially when talking with those people that you have around you that are your support system.
As a nurse I find that I am constantly observing and assessing my patients and residents. How are they doing (both physically and mentally)? Trying my hardest to notice the big and small changes that could mean they aren’t doing as well or hopefully doing better.

🎶SCHOOOLLLS OUT -- NOT SO FAST, ALICE COOPER!

So, schools are opening. Is this a good thing or a risky thing? Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: read these 15 tweets (sorry)

Schools aren't opening because "things are great". Literally nothing about this is cause to relax. (1/15)
It’s quite the opposite, actually. Simply put: schools are opening because the risks and impacts of keeping schools closed far outweigh those of opening them.

Remember: just as peace is more than the absence of war, good public health is more than the absence of disease. (2/15)
Make no mistake: there is no such thing as a risk-free activity. We once sprained a finger whilst typing a tweet (true story).

But like we've said before, public health is about harm reduction. It's a pillar of our work. Our role is to help you identify and balance risks. (3/15)

On #BellLetsTalk, I see stories breaking down the stigma surrounding depression and anxiety.

While this is amazing work, mental health is broader.

In my med school advocacy class I made this point, wanting to destigmatize psychosis. I was told "schizophrenia is scary". 1/
A doctor and a social worker gave me this feedback - people who are very familiar with the spectrum of mental illnesses.

This was at a time a loved one of mine was hospitalized in psychosis - I didn't know what to say.

He was and continues to be loving and kind, not scary. 2/
This year in thinking about the stigma around mental health, broaden your definition. Find compassion for the whole spectrum.

The biases against psychosis and mania run deep and often leave people with these diagnoses at the margins of society. 3/

Toronto’s Marty Verlaan is one of 300,000 Canadians living with schizophrenia. This is his story.

Film: The Man Who Walks Backwards
Directed by: Stephen Hosier
Learn More: torstar.co/W0Ig50DkBd2

@SchizophreniaCa #BellLetsTalk #schizophrenia #mentalhealth
“I just wanted to tell Marty’s story and show people that someone like Marty walking backwards on the street might seem a little peculiar at first. But he’s got a past, he’s got a present and he has a future," Hosier said.

thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
In the film, Marty reveals how he became estranged from his family — his wife and two kids — and hopes to be reunited with them someday, how he began hearing voices and how, about 11 years ago, he began walking backwards.

I didn’t get a chance to comment on this more the other day, but we are absolutely seeing this surge of anorexia in Saskatoon over the last 6 months or so.

In some ways, it’s almost reassuring to see it’s happening elsewhere too. Initially we were wondering if it was just us.
Anorexia is probably the deadliest mental illness you can get for children & adolescents. The mortality rate is high and since it usually hits teens, it takes out kids who shouldn’t be dying of anything at their age. So it’s serious stuff.

They mostly die from two causes:
1) Heart problems

See, if you’re really underweight, you don’t have much left to burn for energy other than muscle.

Your heart is a muscle.

So if you’re low enough in weight, your heart will literally shrink in size. You’re burning it for fuel.

THREAD: It's good to tell your followers that they're not alone and can talk to you, it's even better if you personally check on your friends if they're feeling blue or have not been themselves. Reach out to people - sometimes it's hard for them to ask for help #BellLetsTalk
Sometimes that colleague, co-worker, or employee you supervise missed their deadline because they’re going through a difficult time. Before you start blaming them, ask if everything is alright and keep an open door for them to talk without being judged. #BellLetsTaIk
Before you ask people to come talk to you about various stresses in their life or before you approach someone who’s feeling down, first ask yourself, are you prepared to listen? Are you ready to calm them and be positive? #BellLetsTaIk #BellLetsTalk2020 #BellCause #BellLetsListen

We've come a long way to #EndTheStigma around mental health but there's so much work to do. Particularly when it comes to access to services. We keep saying we treat mental illness like any other disease, but the resources available tell a different story. #BellLetsTalk thread:
When I had a serious depressive episode in my early 20s, my GP was my only option. He was retiring and happy to write a prescription. Meanwhile, I still had no idea what he wanted to treat me for. Depression and anxiety weren't real to me.
Things got worse. I had test after test because I assumed there was something "physically" wrong with me. I wasn't crazy, right?
But tests were negative. And I couldn't function. I lost 40 pounds in a few months. To say my family was worried is an understatement.
