What explains Mexico's uneven gender transition?

Female employment has risen less in Mexico than other Latin American countries

But there's near gender equal representation in Congress

To learn more, I'm travelling to Mexico City, Oaxaca & Merida

DM if you'd like to meet 🇲🇽🙂 ImageImageImageImage
What’s my prior?

Mesoamerican civilisations were #patrilineal.

Societal expectations that women should ideally stay at home were reinforced by #Catholicism, which is still pervasive (80%)

Female labour supply thus rises more weakly in response to economic growth. Image
Guatemala has a higher indigenous (Maya) population and an even lower rate of female labour force participation.

Catholic share is much lower, however (45%).
It's also much poorer.

So it's more stuck in "the patrilineal trap" Image

1/ It came to me very clearly while writing about the #consistentethic and #Catholics this morning.

The consistent ethic, on one view, sought to join what we might call 'sexual morality' to 'social morality,' our concern abt #abortion to other issues.
2/ Bernardin hoped a call for consistency would bring together these strands of what the #CatholicChurch teaches us.

The divisions that would thwart him already existed in 1983 when he proposed the consistent ethic. But there would be other problems.
3/ Following the cues offered by JP2's curia (to a lesser degree JP2 himself), US #Catholic bishops went a different way emphasizing sexual morality & #abortion as a preeminent priority while claiming the consistent ethic unpersuasively & keeping social morality in the backseat.

SHORT 🧵

1/ #Catholicism is not an identity. There is no "#Catholic identity."

Catholicism is the proclamation of an encompassing message of transformation suited to all times & places.

Identity is a #postmodern preoccupation.
2/ As #Catholicism is suited to all times & places that's fine. But the assertion of #Catholic identity rarely (if ever) intends to embrace #postmodernism (or even modernity).
3/ Identity comes from the Latin "idem" for "same," which a casual historical exploration would tell us #Catholicism never is. It has had countless historical and cultural expressions.

At the most obvious level, today the #CatholicChurch is 23 rites.

AN AGNOSTIC WITH NO AX TO GRIND TOLD ME, ‘IF I WERE RELIGIOUS, I’D BE A ROMAN CATHOLIC.’

-thread-
1. It was the haphazard remark of a photographer, an agnostic I believe, that opened my eyes... it was to the effect

#CatholicEdChat #Jesus #Twitter #Bible #books #BookTwitter Image
2. that if Christianity were true, obviously the Roman Catholic Church, with her authority was right.

It was the testimony of a man who had no ax to grind. A Jewish dentist made the same remark in effect to me shortly afterwards. The man-in-the-street

WHY SHOULD I STAKE MY IMMORTAL SOUL UPON HUMAN OPINION?

I entered upon an intensive study of the point. I read the history of the doctrine,

I am considering making a Facebook group for #ProLife for the #Whole Life (#ConsistentLifeEthic) Christian leftists of various kinds, from #socdems, to #socialists, to #distributists, and
others, to combat these following false stigmas about #Christianity(including #Catholicism) and #leftism:

1. That #Christians(including #Catholics) can’t be #leftists/#socialists/etc.
2. That leftists can’t be #religious
3. That leftists can’t be #ProLife

Do you think this
is a good idea? I want to find more people who have a similar mentality of me. Or maybe I could expand it to just do prolife religious leftists in general, considering some other pro-life whole-life religious leftists may also face scrutiny by both American leftist and

One of the leading figures of French #islamologie in modern times was Louis Massignon (1883-1962) chair at the Collège de France on #Islam and whose name is forever associated with the study of Sufism and an #empathetic study of #Islam 1/ ImageImageImageImage

@rlefraim wrote, "A COMMENT ABOUT POPE FRANCIS

I PREFACE MY REMARKS BELOW TO SAY THAT I AM NOT ANTI-ANY GROP OF PEOPLE. I JUDGE PEOPLE BASED ON THEIR BEHAVIOR, NOT ON THEIR RACE, RELIGION OF ETHNICITY. 1) #PopeFrancis #ANTISEMITISM #AntiAmerica #AntiTrump #AntiIsrael
That having been said, I think Roman Catholics should understand that their current Pope, Pope Francis, is a childish, resentful, anti-American, antisemitic fool, who is bad for the Church & for the world & who is failing as a positive spiritual leader. 2) #PopeFrancis
He is no John Paul II by any means. More like a Pope Pius XII (Pacelli). Whose moral compass often was compromised for expediency. 3) #AntiTrump #immigration #AntiAmerican

The colonial encounter

Check out this fascinating moment
in the history of
colonial encounters between Europeans and Africans:

From 1557 to 1632,
#Jesuit missionaries from Portugal and Spain
endeavored to convert the #Ethiopians
from their ancient form of #Christianity
to Roman #Catholicism

After fifty years of failing to convert Ethiopians,
the Portuguese sent a new group of Jesuits to Ethiopia in 1603,
including a priest named Pedro Paez,
whose diplomacy and sympathy for the
tenets of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church
enabled him to convert the emperor.

Short thread on #Catholicism (lapsed, in my case), #highered, #divorce, & what it means to allow grace into our lives on Holy Thursday & always.

#HolyThursday is my favorite day of the Catholic year: It's a day to reflect not only on serving others, but on letting them serve us.
As a child in the Catholic Church, I knew service represented the core of my family's faith. How can we use our gifts to enrich others? How can we make ourselves humble before the tasks of service? How can we bless others via care?

Turns out, this is the EASY part of service.
It is EASY to serve my students, my friends, and my family by loving them. By showing mercy when mistakes are made. By offering space and by offering closeness. By loving others in ways that work for THEM, not just ways that would work for ME.

Being a servant this way is easy.

1 The man who leads weekly Bible studies for members of Trump’s cabinet, as well as members of the House and Senate, wants to inculcate your state legislators and local government officials with his biblical worldview rightwingwatch.org/post/leader-of…
2 Ralph Drollinger teaches: God only hears the prayers of Christians, Christians in government have an obligation to hire only other Christians, social welfare programs are unbiblical, and the death penalty is required by the Bible
3 Drollinger says the Bible doesn’t permit women to teach men, but does have some “unambiguous responsibilities” for women: homemaking, home management, mothering, teaching younger women, displaying hospitality, and dressing modestly
