Thanks @IWS_Network for inviting me to share my story as an #international #immigrant #WomanInSTEM! Throughout this week I will share my journey so far, challenges & triumphs; inviting you to share yours and connect with me if it resonates with you! #VoicesIWS
I grew up in #Delhi #India, a place I still think of as home & where my family still resides. Living in the capital, my parents, sister and I spoke to each other in #tamil, #hindi, & #english. My mom was my first #chemistry teacher. #WomenInSTEM #VoicesIWS @IWS_Network Image
As a teenager I fell in love with the vibrant colors & creative possibilities of the chemistry lab. Nandini ma'am & other excellent teachers, most of whom were #WomenInSTEM at The Mother's International School were my role models. @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS #WomenInSTEM Image

My #CSPC2019 live tweeting #THREAD starts here!

I'll reply to this tweet w/ each panel I attend, creating a thread under each w/ live notes

My schedule: πŸ”—cspc2019.sched.com/shawnmcguirk

And, ICYMI, see the new CSPC magazine for my op-ed about @DSP_SPE & #CapacityBuilding in #scipol!
I wasn't intending on tweeting the symposium, but 2 really good points on skills:

πŸ”Ή For communications, the ability to be brief (tweet length summaries!) is key

πŸ”Ή Universities should promote organic mentorship by leveraging alumni office, get alums to meet students over β˜•!
πŸ”Ή Skills development has strong socio-economic dimension. Accessibility to good schooling even as early as Kindergarten can have large impacts later in life. The foundation of transferable (read: critical) skills stays with you as you later develop expertise.

I'm attending the #DataForGood panel organized by @SFU, moderated by @drjoyjohnson w/ Sheryl Groeneweg @ISED_CA, Richard Evans @StatCan_eng, and Bohdan Noysk @SFU

#AI #partnership #bigdata #cdnsci #scipol #cdnpoli
RE - risk assessment for data security is a daunting task ➑️ so it's important to be able to communicate what is known, what can be done. Govt needs to be forthcoming to build great relationships, to build trust.

BN - the best partnerships are built on strong relationships.
BN works in sensitive patient data, which is a fantastic resource. Researchers have been accessing this kind of data for decades because of good practise to anonymized and de-identify data.

At the Canadian Consortium for Research meeting today w/ @MitacsCanada #CSPF and @NSERC_CRSNG colleagues, where @VB_Lisa opens by discussing #SupportTheReport efforts, asking how can we foster next steps for fundamental research and the #NextGenCanSci in Canada?

#scipol #thread
James Compton, prev prez @CAUT_ACPPU shows that there was a massive increase in student population, but this has slowed over the last 3 years. It would have slowed more, were it not for international students. Yet, #PSE funding from fed has been flat, has decreased at prov level
... Tuition has also increased over time. Faculty wages are not the culprit though, the % #PSE expenditures on wages has diminished over time. There is also more reliance on contract staff ➑️ and academic staff are not being renewed

Excited to represent @CAPhys in important discussions on fundamental research in πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ and the training of researchers #cdnsci Opening slide of Canadian Consortium of Research's Summit for Science and Researchers
Added bonus, taking it all in with my talented @MitacsCanada science policy fellowship colleagues from, all who've rocked the transition from PhD to government πŸ‘Œ#CSPF
The day's keynote: @cdavidnaylor on the importance, especially now, of increasing in scholarly inquiry.

#RM_Ott19 last panel @research_money on whole-of-govt initiatives to support #innovation. Moderated by @ChristineTrautt @CollegeCan, w/ Rob Wright ADM of @PSPC_SPAC, Wayne Moore @DFO_MPO, @NancyHamzawi ADM @environmentca, Andrea Johnston @ISED_CA, Gilles Saindon @AAFC_Canada
#RM_Ott19 RW says @PSPC_SPAC is looking beyond the usual vertical approach of governments, taking a more partnership view to drive success. WM @DFO_Science adds that bar has been set high for collab across departments, to get other ministers' / ADM's input and advice
#RM_Ott19 AJ @ISED_CA likes the "partnership" view, which aligns well with innovation portfolio of ISED. The federal family can be engaged in partnerships in one swoop (e.g. in Clean Growth Hub) rather than forcing external partners to reach out to depts separately

Stellar panel at @research_money #RM_Ott19 to cap off the evening, chaired by Paul Dufour, w/ Dan Wayner @NRC_CNRC, Sarah Gallagher @scgQuasar @csa_asc, and @ChiefSciCan
P Dufour - There is nothing more useless, than unwanted science advice. Need demand, context, and institutional capacity to sustain it. It's important to maintain trust, and not to oversell the role of advisors.

So, what's the secret sauce to support #scienceadvice in Canada?
#RM_Ott19 @ChiefSciCan is the "dean" of #scienceadvice in Canada, but it still feels like she just got there. Most importantly, she hopes that she is the first of many.

#CSPC2018 now at the participatory panel on funding for trainees.
Most voted model for support for trainees is direct via scholarship and fellowships (rather than thru institutions or via grants), and 52% prefer higher value to 48% wanting more awards. #CSPC2018

These are some of many questions in @DSP_SPE survey πŸ“Ž sp-exchange.ca/events/survey/

Panel 2, on granting agencies and #citizenscience w/ @mgfortin_rd @NSERC_CRSNG + Ted Hewitt @SSHRC_CRSH + Serge Marchand @FRQS1 + Louise Poissant @FRQSC + Michael Strong @CIHR_IRSC #CSPC2018
#CSPC2018 @mgfortin_rd says #citizenscience and participative science is incredibly important. This isn't only including public in research, it's engaging communities who have knowledge incl #indigenous traditional knowledge.
... Current project ongoing, is a northern community that wants to better document the status of their natural resources (air quality, water) and to analyze the impact of #climatechange & other human impacts on these. There is added value to including these communities. #CSPC2018

David Castle champions @MitacsCanada #CSPF program in #BC, and discusses the importance of capacity building of #scipol across levels of govt (fed + prov), and placing fellows in depts that can and will use their skills effectively, + help them to develop new ones. #CSPC2018

#CSPC2018 panel on #scienceadvice starts!

@DLEKirkwood chief scientist of @NRCan says issue is not do much making sure science is valued in govt (seems it is) but to ensure evidence is used in policy. Plus, policy is inherently quicker than science.

#scipol #canpoli #cdnsci
... The challenge for new science advisors and chief scientists is to ensure that the need for #EBDM in policy is understood across the department, across govt. #CSPC2018
#CSPC2018 Sarah Gallagher @csa_asc says building relationships btw scientists and policymakers (#scicomm skills helpful here!) is key

We really put the FUN in dysfunctional - Canada is a relatively small country on a population standpoint, but we are ever smaller if we are divided across provinces - @cdavidnaylor #CSPC2018
+ the majority of dollars in HERD come from universities, not federal. To note, provinces don't contribute much either, though QuΓ©bec has been a model to follow.
Canada doesn't collaborate well across provincial borders, they work much more with international partners. We have a chance to knit #cdnsci closer together and make our science more national ➑️ we have a chance to realign
