Of all the things I’ll remember from #SBC19, what just happened at an airport bar will stand out the most. #SBCtoo #ChurchToo

A brief story about the prevalence of sexual abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention, and just how much work is ahead:
Our flight was full of Southern Baptists, including two guys who spent most of their flight talking about #SBC19 and what they felt was a slow but important shift in the SBC’s broader culture.

I occasionally took breaks from reading, as the subject absolutely fascinates me.
After the flight, I waited outside the gate to see if they’d be up for talking to me a bit more.

Both were, and one had a 2-hour layover, so we sat down at a nearby bar table. He knew of and appreciated our work, and had clearly thought a lot about the issues #SBCtoo #Churchtoo

Today, we're going to do a brief (lol, brief) review of Evangelical Christian Complementarianism. There have been whole books written on the subject, so this thread is in no way exhaustive. I'll do my best to show my work, and make it as practical as possible.
Before we dive in too deep, it's worth noting that while ECs talk about this topic a lot, they don't agree, particularly on the practical applications.
For example, the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) has a statement of faith on their website: cbmw.org/about/statemen…

So I see that thanks to some high profile shares another article about p*rnography is making its way around the #ChurchToo tag and I just want to take a moment and state that for the most part, right now, I am deeply unconcerned about the “role” of p*rn.
First off, people, mostly men, with power have been grooming, abusing and assaulting people with less power since long before the invention of internet p*rnography and second off, p*rn tends to function as something of a scapegoat for conservative Christians. #churchtoo
If the problem is p*rn, then the problem can’t possibly be our homophobic, white supremacist complementarian theology, you see. The problem is always “out there” and not “in here.” #churchtoo

1. While there hasn’t been much recent media attention to the #ExposeChristianSchools hashtag that went viral in January, the discussion continues, along with #ExposeChristianHomeschooling and threads on primary sources. I want to share some highlights and ideas in this thread.
2. Why do Christian schools need exposing? Short answer: the Christian Right has radicalized the GOP and is in power. It is the single greatest threat to democracy and human rights in America today. And private schools and homeschooling are part of its long-term plan.
3. To understand how Christian Reconstructioists/Dominionists played and play an active role in creating evangelical school and homeschooling curricula as a means of radicalizing children and mobilizing them to impose theocracy, read @julieingersoll's book Building God's Kingdom.

What is the victims responsibility?

To recover choice.
To find voice.
To restore the ruins.
To do the hard work of healing.

Don’t you DARE tell a victim it is his/her “responsibility” to tell the story.

It shows you are uniformed at best and utterly obtuse at worst. 🤨
Do you know how long it can take to do the hard hard work of healing what someone else smashed????

Years, I tell you.
Years.

Why?

They are COWARDS. 👊🏻

Yesterday we looked at how Christian homeschooling and ATI promotes the isolation of children, which allows abuse to continue undetected and unchallenged.
#ExposeChristianHomeschooling
Today we are going to look at some of ATI's material about forgiveness, and how it shames victims, enables abusers, and cements dysfunctional relationships.
As always, this scans of this material can be viewed here:

⚠️⚠️CW: This thread will be discussing abuse, religious abuse, self harm, and coercion. If you have experienced these things, it may bring up bad memories. If you plan to read along, please have a plan to keep yourself safe during and after.

1. Alright, let’s unpack in some more detail what’s wrong with the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee’s recommendations in response to the concerns @jdgreear raised about sexual abuse in particular churches.

#Exvangelical #ChurchToo #EmptyThePews #SundayMorning
2. The SBC’s Executive Committee recommends making clear that “the Convention does not, and will not, cooperate with a church that clearly evidences indifference to addressing the crime of sexual abuse.”

This *sounds* good, but much hinges on what’s meant by “clearly evidences.”
3. Things quickly get iffy, defensive, and then downright dubious with respect to the meaning of “clearly evidences.” Note how quickly the Executive Committee’s moves to emphasize not presuming guilt, as opposed to framing things in terms of taking accusations seriously.

One reason we have denominations - SBC, PCA, UMC, etc - is so you can find a church most closely adhering to your understanding of Scripture. Joining a church you disagree with on a major doctrinal issue and expecting them to change is goofy. #ChurchToo #MeToo

~ A Thread ~
Since the @HoustonChron published their distrubing article documenting abuse in the #SBC, I've seen quite a number of people trying to say that "If the SBC had women pastors this would not happen." As a survivor (#MeToo #ChurchToo) I find this extremely insulting. Here's why:
1. Taking advantage of a tragedy in order to push a social or political agenda is tacky. You want female pastors? That's fine. But you chould join a church that ordains women. However, when you join that church, don't be shocked when you find abuse there too. It's everywhere.

Coming next... a long, personal thread about a pedophile #SBCtoo 1/
Years and years ago, someone I care about very deeply was sexually molested by Allen Kelsey, a deacon in a local Southern Baptist church. An investigation revealed that this was not the first time he had violated a child. 2/
Apparently, he had been asked to quietly leave other churches after being accused of the same thing. None of those churches protected their children, or the future children Kelsey would come in contact with. 3/

TW. Abuse, child abuse, ableism, 'discipline'

This is the last (part 6) of my live-tweet threads about To Train Up a Child by Michael and Debi Pearl, also talking openly about my own experience.

Mute if appropriate.
At the end of my last thread, I said a few things that I want to clarify first up.

I said that I never wanted the family to be separated as if staying together is the goal. That was quite a selfish way of speaking.

1/ In the past 20 years, a disturbing number of Southern Baptists with formal church roles have engaged in sexual misconduct, according to an investigation by @HoustonChron and @ExpressNews: bit.ly/2GtEiRW
@ExpressNews 2/ We analyzed thousands of pages of news reports and court docs to find sexual abuse/misconduct allegations against Southern Baptist church leaders/volunteers. We interviewed hundreds of victims, church leaders, offenders & law enforcement officials.

Here’s what we found:
@ExpressNews 3/ Since 2008, when leaders rejected reforms meant to curb sexual abuse, 250+ people who worked or volunteered in Southern Baptist churches have been charged with sex crimes. Nearly all were convicted, took plea deals or have pending cases. #churchtoo bit.ly/2GzkvR9

I was 23, married a year, pregnant with our first child. I was being trained to lead a small group of middle schoolers at the church summer camp.

So was he.

He is low serving time, one of the men named in @HoustonChron database, for what he did to boys. houstonchronicle.com/news/investiga…
I didn’t know. I didn’t think any of us had known. I trusted the church version of facts.

I was never told that my small group of girls included one who had been in his Sunday school class. No one ever checked on her or talked to her about what happened because she was a girl.
She was a bit belligerent that summer.

She had good reason to be.

(She’s a dear friend now that we’re both adults, and I love her feistiness now as much as I was confused by it then.)

With #ExposeChristianHomeschooling - yep. I have lots to say. Necessary disclaimer: I am not opposed to home education, when said education is properly done (as I am doing with my child, as many other parents are doing with theirs.) I am doing #SecularHomeschooling. (a thread)
We did "School at Home" - starting with ACE. I was 4 when I started first grade; I turned 5 two weeks later. I finished first grade in under 3 months, so my mother made me repeat it.
Then we switched to aBeka for my second grade year.
Don't get me wrong - I loved aBeka because it didn't take me long at all to realize that all I had to do was skim the text for bolded words, and read the sidebars for "terms and definitions" - that's all they ever tested on.

@SimonWDC YES!! Simon, this is the culmination of a 50+ years, long-term, plan of the GOP. They're trying to destroy the federal govt from within. Once it's accomplished, they'll blame trump & ditch him 4 Pence. Pence was their preferred POTUS all along.
@SimonWDC Are you familiar with Council for National Policy? Everyone, but trump, is a member/affiliated with the group. IMHO this is a revenge presidency for Nixon. Republicans hate liberals/Democrats. I heard it in church during 15/16. Please look at this. 2/
@SimonWDC #Exvangelicals, like me, have been trying to get the media & others to listen to us. Did you know that the evangelical charlatans ran a HUGE data operation to elect trump? The GOP has been taken over by religious zealots that want theocracy by 2020. #ChristianTaliban

1. Scaffolding is a framework erected for workers to safely work while something is under construction. It is a place where the worker can be anchored, hold supplies, and rest, without constantly tearing down the support system. It helps you hold your place and reduces fatigue.
2. Scaffolding can be internal to a structure, or external to it, depending on the area being worked upon. Where you are doing internal work, you will need to set up and keep strong scaffolding to stay safe, upon which to rest, and to hold the ground you have gained. #recovery
3. If you are doing internal work, but have external scaffolding, your emotional health will continually collapse every time you are triggered, overtired, out of sorts, or overwhelmed. You must place the scaffold where it is needed, otherwise, you will fall like a house of cards.

In the proper cynicism of anyone white and/or male (which, historically, is absolutely earned), I'm leery of trusting too much in white dudes with power. I've done a poor job in the past in choosing which guys to think highly of - I'm trying to be better.

So, Mr. Rogers.
I grew up in the era of Mr. Rogers, but I don't think I spent much time in his neighborhood. I grew up on Sesame Street, eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every day while surrounded by puppets. I didn't think of Mr. Rogers at all until I worked at a christian bookstore.
While I was there, I read every book we had on the shelf. Well, at one point, at least. That's when I was told, repeatedly, that Mr. Rogers and his ethos had destroyed America. Never mind the fact that he was a minister - he was the wrong kind, and taught the anti-christ spirit.

2. I have a couple of quibbles. This one is fairly trivial, but @mckaycoppins, please take note--I'm a Hoosier, and no one in Indiana considers Columbus "a suburb of Indianapolis." By now, some may consider it an exurb, I suppose, but definitely not a suburb.
3. More substantively, as is all too typical for @TheAtlantic, I find this piece annoyingly sympathetic to evangelicals' and other conservative Christians' sense of being "beleaguered." THEY. ARE. NOT. PERSECUTED. They are pathological authoritarians
