Roger Payne, legend of whale biology and marine conservation has died. The world has lost a force of nature.

I wrote a book with Roger in it, he took me under his wing and we became friends.

Here is a small part of the story of this wonderful human.

🧵 Image
2/ Born in 1935, his father worked at Bell labs “the Google of its time”. His mother a viola player filled their house with music. Exploring local woods & streams he “fell completely in love with wildlife and being outdoors”. They moved to NYC and he was crestfallen, hating it
3/ All through Roger’s life run these strands of tools, nature, adventure, family and perhaps above all, shared music and art.

Thursday's topic: Wolves (and lynx) in Europe.

Terrors of the forest? Or necessary keystone species?

As with everything in ecology, nothing is simple! Today I (@AdamFSmith) will look at some myths, science, and interesting facts about these species. Claws out, let's go! 🐺

1/n Wolf and lynx confront one ...
Firstly, this is my immediate research area. Over the last 3 years I have been involved in numerous studies involving wolves and lynx, however the "speed of science" means few are published right now!

It is extremely complex, so over Twitter you'll have to bare with me!

Europe's legal protection and softening public opinion has successfully seen population and range rebounds for these species.

Both are listed as protected under the EU Habitat's Directive and cannot be hunted in EU countries! 🇪🇺

BUT...

New paper for ‘ibis.iSDM’ now published in Ecological Informatics. Here I present a new R-package that allows the integration of different datatypes in SDMs. But it can do much more than that... #sdm #biodiversity #conservation
doi.org/10.1016/j.ecoi…
👇(1/8)
So one might ask why another R-package for correlative SDMs, and I generally agree. The specific role of the package for me and our group is to a) support all types of integration originally highlighted by Fletcher et al. and more (doi.org/10.1002/ecy.27…, @FletcherEcology) (2/8)
..., b) propose a modelling framework founded in Poisson Process Models and support Bayesian SDMs, c) enable easy construction of scenarios and projections and d) have a modular coding framework that can be easily updated with further functionalities (3/8)

Fundamental changes in the proposed bill:
a)Limits the scope & ambit of the original FCA (1980), removing crucial safeguards from a vast majority of India's #biodiverse rich #forests, thereby opens the floodgates for diversion for other uses

b) Undoes many provisions of the existing #ForestConservationAct; c) dilutes the 202/1996 #SupremeCourt ‘Godavarman’ #judgement, overturns its #conservation gains
(d) facilitates privatisation of forests to create plantations

Due to a busy start of 2023 I hadn't discussed our recent paper @npjbiodiversity doi.org/10.1038/s44185…, done with @gpardoBC3 @MoustaphaItani @AgusBC3 (@BC3Research, @GCCGtweet).
For many reasons, it's important to know natural herbivore abundance. #FoodSystems #conservation 1/9
Back in 2008, Anthony Barnosky had proposed a first estimate on how much herbivore was naturally populating Earth. He was not intending to close the issue - rather trying to open a debate that is very relevant for understanding and managing ecosystems.
2/9
Yet many have since then taken such estimate as written in stone, neither really understanding the scientific method (subjected to constant validation) nor reviewing evidence published later. A call of attention for unfortunate partisan use of science.

1/a few *Yesterday, I had two conversations about the threat of swifts, or any species, becoming nationally extinct: one with a politician, the other with a school pupil.
#COP15 thread
2/a few
One reacted by saying they thought it unlikely the government would help swifts because it would set a pretence to help the 69 other species of British birds on the red list. A list defined by the need for ‘urgent action.’
#COP15
3/a few
The other said, 'It sounds like a nightmare. How can I help? What can I do?’

One has the power to stop it. One doesn't. One will have to live with the consequences of the choices made by the other.

In this video, Dr. Ullas Karanth states that its foundational science makes the book deep and meaningful.
Please watch the video
“Good science and entertaining writing seldom come from the same person, but author Ullas Karanth is an exception…,” says James D. Nichols (Emeritus Scientist), about Dr. Ullas Karanth’s latest book, ‘Among Tigers’.
Although ‘Among Tigers’ is an adventure-tale of a man fascinated by tigers for over half a century, it is also a product of solid research he has done as one of the world’s leading tiger biologists and conservationists.

Join us this Friday at 6 pm IST for a discussion with Mr. Praveen Bhargav and our Research Fellow, Vinni Jain, as they discuss the evolution of Wild Life (Protection) Act and possible solutions to make it more impactful.

The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, was a pivotal moment for biodiversity conservation in India. The Act provides legal protection to several species of wild animals and plants, prohibits hunting, supports the establishment of protected areas.
#CWSWildlifeChronicles

And the Act also regulates the trade of wildlife parts and products. Since the Act was passed 50 years ago, it has had a remarkable impact on Indian wildlife and conservation. It has also been heavily criticised, with the laws having undergone several amendments over time.

(1) I love forests for their beauty, the peace and calm I feel when I walk on forest trails, and their role in preserving biodiversity and the climate.

Today, I was reminded twice how diverse other people's attitudes toward natural forests may be.

Start of a thread 🧵
🌳

(2) First, according to a BBC Panorama investigation, I learned that a firm that has received six billion pounds in green energy subsidies from UK taxpayers is cutting down forests that are essential to the Canadian ecology.

(3) Reporters concluded that millions of tons of imported wood pellets, classified as renewable energy, are burned at Drax's largest power plant in Britain. However, part of the wood came from Canada's old-growth forests, which took thousands of years to develop.

Fourth post in the #WildlifeWeek series. Today’s post is more of a #reviving one than #reintroduction.

Day 4 – Return of the #bandits to #Chambal !

The Red Crowned Roofed #turtle is a #species of #freshwater turtle endemic to South #Asia.
1/9
Historically the species was widespread in the #Ganga River, both in #India and #Bangladesh. Extirpated from most of its former range but currently it has dwindled a last surviving population of less than 500 adult individuals in the #wild.
2/9
Their population reduced drastically due to depredation of eggs and hatchlings by Golden #jackals, #habitat degradation due to #pollution and illegal sand mining in the floodplains. They are also extensively #poached for their meat and shell.

The €50,000 KfW Bernhard Grzimek Prize for #conservation will be presented today in Frankfurt.

But should Bernhard #Grzimek really be celebrated as a role model? 🤔

1/
Following his civil service career in Nazi Germany as a member of the SA (Nazi Stormtroopers), Grzimek became a director of a zoo & an animal rights activist.

2/
Grzimek discovered his love for conservation in the #Serengeti, where he:
🔴 campaigned for yrs alongside @FZS_Frankfurt AGAINST the land rights of the Indigenous #Maasai
🔴 “professionalized” the militarized monitoring of Protected Areas
🔴 boosted mass #tourism in the area

Our new paper @PNASNews is addressing a long-standing question in #ecology, #biodiversity sciences and #conservation biology:
How do multiple #species #coexist in fragmented landscapes?

A 🧵on multispecies coexistence: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… (1/7) Image
2/7 Spatially #fragmented #landscapes are very common, both naturally & through human activities.

In such landscapes, a combination of local survival and #colonization of empty habitat patches is key to species' regional persistence. Image
3/7 However, ecological #theory on species coexistence has so far largely focused on local communities.

By integrating #coexistence theory and #metacommunity theory, we propose a mathematical framework to understand multiple species' coexistence in fragmented landscapes. Image
