Welcome to a somewhat overdue (mega)thread devoted to the @AppleTV / @bbcstudios series #PrehistoricPlanet season 2 (#prehistoricplanet2 if you will), streaming NOW, and specifically to the first episode: ISLANDS... Image
Islands is one of my favourite episodes of #PrehistoricPlanet2. We knew early on that we’d cover stories relevant to the Late Cretaceous island faunas of Romania and Madagascar (since both places have revealed numerous amazing Late Cretaceous island-dwelling animals), but…
... what else could we show? The producer for this episode – Paul Stewart – worked really hard to find appropriate stories, and succeeded in focusing on amazing animals doing interesting things…

Pleased to announce that our Encyclopedia of Biodiversity (3rd Ed.) chapter ‘#Dinosaurs, Extinction Theories for', co-authored w/ @SteveBrusatte, is out now! doi.org/10.1016/B978-0…
🦖☄ A short thread 👇1/6 Image
This is a follow-up to Archibald & MacLeod (2001), in which we review the current evidence behind the consensus & the state of the art around the debate on the drivers of the K/Pg mass extinction. (2/6) Image
Here you can see an American (left) in front of the original ‘extinction boundary’ preserved in Italian marine rocks and an Italian (right) on American terrestrial rocks preserving the boundary 😁

We have less than 5 days left on the #Folklore #Bestiary for #DnD 5e and #OldSchoolEssentials!
Creators from ALL AROUND THE WORLD are adapting their favorite creatures from their cultures to their favorite #TTRPG!

I was lucky enough to be included!

Being a Brazilian writing in English in a community that is predominantly US/Europe centered, was always hard.
Having a #TTRPG #Monster #Book inspired by the #Folklore of other people, being made in collaboration with people all around, was great!
We have a rich and varied #Folklore in Brazil. We have stories that trace all the way back the native people and their rich culture. Legends that came all the way from Africa. Stories and fantasy tales from Europe too. All mixed up in our imagination. To adapt that to #TTRPG? YES

A new species of #dinosaur has just dropped and word on the street is that it’s pretty similar to the #TRex

In fact, researchers think this discovery could explain why these beasts evolved to have tiny arms!

In 2012, the almost-complete skeleton of a new kind of #dinosaur was found in the northern Patagonia region of #Argentina.

The dinosaur has been christened #Meraxes gigas. The generic epithet is an ode to a dragon in the #GameOfThrones series.
Standing at the height of 11 m (36 ft) and weighing roughly 4000 kgs, the #dinosaur sported several crests, bumps and horns on its skull, which lent it a menacing appearance.

But the highlight of the findings is that the dinosaur had teeny-tiny arms, just like the #Trex! Image

I've just been looking at Big Sara, the privately owned #Allosaurus skeleton (genuine fossil, not a cast) currently on show at Westquay Shopping Centre, #Southampton. What a spectacular specimen! Here are some thoughts... #dinosaurs #fossils
I've heard some concerns about the displaying of this genuine fossil in a food court. I have no idea how the specimen is faring in terms of pyrite decay and so on but...
... it's not in an environment that will contribute to decay. Indoor spaces like this are, in the UK, not humid, but cool and airy. Big Sara is in a big open space close to a giant window. Moving to anatomy...

Welcome to the 5th and final of my #PrehistoricPlanet threads in which I talk about the science and background to what we showed in this new @AppleTVPlus @bbcstudios production. This time we look at EP 5: FORESTS… #dinosaurs #Cretaceous
I was lead scientific consultant on #PrehistoricPlanet and was extensively involved in our many decisions, all of which were science-led or scientifically informed. I was, of course, merely one among many in a HUGE team that involved hundreds of very talented people!
Ep 5 focuses on the #dinosaurs and #pterosaurs that lived in forests during the Maastrichtian (the final part of the Late #Cretaceous). The Maastrichtian world was heavily forested, with temperate, subtropical & tropical woodland covering around 78% of the land surface…

Welcome to another thread on the science behind the new @AppleTVPlus @bbcstudios series #PrehistoricPlanet, specifically EP 4: ICE WORLDS. This thread will work best if you read the tweets as you watch the episode in real time – do this if you can…
I was lead scientific consultant on #PrehistoricPlanet, and it was a great privilege to work with so MANY excellent and talented people ... such an amazing team! Here we go...
Ice Worlds focuses on the #dinosaurs of the far north and south of the Maastrichtian (very latest #Cretaceous) world, places where conditions were cool or cold – especially in winter, of course – and where the flora and animals were adapted for seasonal darkness and cold…

Ok, here we go on a thread relating to the science and decisions behind ep 3 (FRESHWATER) of #PrehistoricPlanet , our new @AppleTVPlus @bbcstudios series devoted to Late #Cretaceous life. Here we go... #dinosaurs #pterosaurs #plesiosaurs #frogs
Freshwater kicks off in north-east Asia (a location consistent with the geology, climate and animals we show) with a spectacular waterfall connected to canyons. Juvenile #pterosaurs - they're young #azhdarchids - have gathered here to roost... #PrehistoricPlanet
We know essentially nothing of the roosting or resting habits of #azhdarchids but see it as likely that they would have gathered in numbers (fossil evidence does show that they were social) in places that predators couldn't easily get to. Hat-tip to discussion with @MarkWitton ..

Join me in this thread as I talk about the science and decisions behind what we show in ep 2 - DESERTS - of the new @AppleTVPlus @bbcstudios series #PrehistoricPlanet . Deserts aired on Tuesday, but better late than never. Here we go...
Deserts kicks off in western South America on an arid plain where a mass gathering of the giant #titanosaur #Dreadnoughtus have gathered to display and compete for mates. Dreadnoughtus, from Argentina, was named in 2014 by @kenlacovara [shown in photo!] and colleagues...
The idea that sauropods might have gathered and competed is based on behaviour seen in modern birds, mammals and other animals. Remember that events like this MUST have happened in the past, as they do today...

1/ Well, tx for the waiting but we had to double check out #scientific findings cause:
It turns out #history of the #extinction of the #dinosaurs has to be rewritten! We found prove that Dinos survived at least until 11/2/2022 !!!

But let's start from the beginning.
puhh, I wanted to start from the beginning and than an surprising attack of vomiting struck me down. I suspect angry competitors poisening me. Anyway, as I said, we found dinos. Apparently they are not that special here. At first this one(1). It was sleeping or mummified,...
... sure yet. we went on (1) till Dolavon, they turn left looking for promising land. till (2). First we found some dino footprints(3). they were pretty fresh for animals supposedly extinct ten of millions of years ago! we knew we were on something big there!...

Attacks or accidents? A thread for #FossilFriday!
Several hadrosaurs have been found with serious, oval shaped injuries to the tall spines along the tops of their tail. Some paleontologists have suggested that these are from unsuccessful attacks by tyrannosaurs. But are they?1/11
The two best specimens are a Brachylophosaurus (JRF1002) and an Edmontosaurus (DMNH1493) with strikingly similar injuries. In both cases the bones had begun healing after the injury occurred, so while these may have contributed to the animals deaths they likely weren't the cause.
Both genera were predated on by large tyrannosaurs, so it's possible that these were bite marks from attacks that ended with the hadrosaur managing to escape. Indeed, the shape and size would be roughly congruent with a bite mark from the local tyrannosaur genera.

Holy crap. I just escaped this island called Isla Marsbar that's filled to the brim with #dinosaurs.

This was was insane. A raptor tried to eat my ass and not in a sexy way. In a "your ass is being digested by a dinosaur" way.

Anyway. Here's my tell of woe.
#jurassicpark
So the truth of the matter is I've ALWAYS loved dinosaurs.

Ever since I was a little kid, @Soundsaboutleft and I used to pretend to be dinosaurs.

I'd played a T-Rex and he'd pretend to be a magical dinosaur that stole your allowance and hogged the NES.
I can say that one of the biggest thrills I ever had back when was meeting my childhood hero. Dr. Sherman.

He was at a dig site and he'd found a new raptor. One that wasn't a bitch ass velociraptor. Those things are glorified turkeys with claws.

Naw. It was much cool.

Scientists Solve 200-Year-Long Mystery Behind Origin of #Pterosaurs—First-Known Flying Animals

#Evolution happens in the form of small, gradual, progressive changes over thousands, even millions of years. The tree of evolution acts as a guide to trace back the evolutionary pathway of a particular species to understand different traits it possesses.
The case of the most-popular ancient flying creature, #pterosaurs, however, was quite peculiar!

🦖A team of researchers from the University of Portsmouth recently collected some fossilised remains from the site of an ancient river bed in Morocco.
🦖Post analysis, the fossils were identified as the teeth of the #Spinosaurusaegyptiacus—the very same dinosaur that played the main villain in the movie @JurassicPark III.

Yes, you heard that right!

Our new #IsleofWight #theropod #dinosaurs - Vectaerovenator (not as scary as it looks: 'vect-air-oh-ven-a-tor') from the Greensand of #Shanklin - was published yesterday in an #OA paper, available here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10… Brief thread on this research...
This dinosaur - so far known from four extremely unusual, anatomically interesting vertebrae (two of them shown here) - was discovered by three different collectors, our work on describing them was led by University of Southampton PhD student @palaeoguy12 ... #FossilFriday Image
It was obvious from the start that this was (1) a theropod (or predatory dinosaur), (2) a new species and genus, and (3) interesting in being highly pneumatic (that is, it has loads of air-filled cavities and openings: you can see those features in these photos)... #dinosaurs Image

New Paper: 1st dinosaur from #IsleofEigg! We describe a limb bone, & attribute it to a Middle #Jurassic stegosaur! Thread👇 [1/7] #StEiggosaurus #Fossils #Scotland #dinosaurs #FossilFriday
I discovered the bone on @NatGeo funded #fieldwork in 2017. #IsleofEigg is known for #Jurassic marine reptiles & fish #fossils (found by Hugh Miller & others). It was collected by a team frm @GeosciencesEd & Staffin Dinosaur Museum. #StEiggosaurus [2/7]
The bone was badly eroded, but @MrIchthyosaurus carefully prepared it for the team to study. We combined our expertise in #Mesozoic reptile #anatomy and bone microstructure (#histology), to narrow down the identification. #StEiggosaurus #fossils [3/7]

If you’re interested in the history of #dinosaurs, you’ll know the #GideonMantell story, since it’s covered in every single book on dinosaurs. But some new data has just come to light on key events, follow me for a thread… [art by Diego Barletta].
Supposedly, Mantell – a medical doctor and amateur palaeontologist – obtained some fossil teeth while visiting a patient in Cuckfield, East Sussex. He realised they were from a giant reptile, and named the beast #Iguanodon in 1825… #dinosaurs #fossils
The conventional version of the story is that these initial teeth were found by Gideon’s wife, Mary Ann Mantell, while she was accompanying him on a visit to a patient. The #fossils were observed in gravel piled up for road building...
