ABA alert, possible #CRPD/#DisabilityRights violation: Just saw mail from Dr Anchen Laubscher, Medical Director of @Netcare_Limited (well-known hospital group in South Africa). They're having a briefing by ABA providers for clinical staff on 10 May. #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs
@Netcare_Limited Given that I've only heard about this now, I'm guessing that the @Netcare_Limited leadership team have not yet received #DisabilityRights training, and that they may be unaware of the implications of what they have agreed to. Disability activists are contacting them right now.
For those who don't know what ABA is and why human rights activists want ABA-based therapies banned in South Africa and internationally, here is an article explaining some of the abuses inherent in these methods.

Imagine being disabled to the extent where the DWP have already confirmed your inability to work and then suddenly having to go to the Job centre where a work coach who has never met you before and has no knowledge of you disability can say 'you can work now, and...1
If you don't start looking, you will be sanctioned.' Now this might seem ridiculous, but unless I'm reading it incorrectly, that is the reality of the system which the Tories are looking to introduce. I get that allowing people to try work while receiving benefits is a,,,
Good idea, however this system will punish those who absolutely have no prospect of working, the White Paper pledges that such individuals will indeed be protected, but in practice how will this happen when decisions are solely at the discretion of work coaches? It won't 3

Happy #ValentinesDay2023 lovely people! 🧵

As many of you will most likely know, I have never had a partner of any description in my entire life, mainly as a result of laws governing joint income for people in receipt of social security. I have long been campaigning to… 1
change these laws and that fight is still ongoing. However this thread is not about an explanation of the laws and the general consequences, you can read more about that in the piece that I will link at the bottom, although it will be slightly outdated for reasons which…2
I will shortly explain. For the past two years, ever since I began the #RightToLove campaign, it was my belief that it would be better for me not to seek a life partner for several reasons. The first being that I didn’t want to risk becoming financially dependent on her…3

I'm told that Medicaid must be stopped in one state before one can even apply in the next. That is up to 90 days out of pocket on treatment costs for the disabled. That is unacceptable.

That 90 days is enough to limit a disabled person's ability to move within the U.S. Healthcare is expensive.

It is worse when the disabled person has developmental or intellectual disabilities.

For autism & intellectual disability, there is a huge wait for services: 3 months MA Health application +
10 months DDS eligibility application + gods know how long on waitlists for services.

DREDF applauds the 12/07/22 order of District Court Judge Vince Chhabria dismissing, with prejudice, a federal case seeking to legalize euthanasia in California by eliminating the self-administration requirement in the State's End-of-Life Options Act (ELOA) (1/5)
Shavelson v. CA Dept of Health Care Services (3:21-cv-06654), was a misguided attempt to use #DisabilityRights laws to eliminate the requirement that a person seeking to end their life under ELOA have "the physical and mental ability to self-administer” aid-in-dying drugs (2/5)
ELOA’s self-administration requirement was enacted by the California Legislature for the express purpose of preventing lethal injection, mercy killings, and euthanasia. It is the Act’s most essential safeguard, specifically intended to prevent coercion and abuse (3/5)

THREAD on what goes unreported about #DisabilitySport (here #WCBB) from developing countries like India. I woke up to an American colleague's exciting tweet about conducting research at this 'international inaugural event' and the #ScholarActivist in me cannot keep quiet. 1/
@_IWBF and @ICRC_nd including @Paralympics have for years noted that inside India, the #SportGovernance of #WCBB is a crumbling structure with no real grassroots development happening in true sense. Several complaints have been brought to their notice 2/
In private "off-record" conversations many international experts who carry pride in introducing #DisabilitySport to people from marginalized communities like India agree that @wbfi_info needs lot of work internally to call itself truly committed to the sport's development 3/

If pip does end up being means tested, what will happen is that anybody who receives it while living with a partner will have their partner's income taken into account when deciding eligibility. This means that people who may not have been receiving 1
Income -related good benefits, but do get PIP would be dragged into the trap I have highlighted as part of my #RightToLove campaign. Disabled people would be a risk of completely losing our autonomy just for being in a relationship. I'm trying to fix this, but the government 2
are rumoured to be determined to make our quality-of-life even worse than it already is. It feels like we're being treated as second-class citizens and it is absolutely unacceptable that this mindset persists in 21st-century Britain. 3 #DisabilityRights

#Thread . My lovely night owls! In light of tweet sent to me by @KizzyDaze I am particularly worried that the government may be planning to expand benefits means testing in order to reduce eligibility. This would hit working disabled people particularly hard. 1
And would also impact those who only receive benefits that are not currently means tested and live with a partner. It means testing is expanded, their partners income will be taken into account, meaning that even more people will be 2
Subject to the issues, raised in may #RightToLove campaign. This would be completely intolerable. I’m not saying that any of this will happen but due to repeated government refusals to rule it out, we can’t say for sure that it won’t. 3

With Hunt seemingly pushing for a return to austerity in order to balance the books which only need balancing urgently because Truss totally destroyed them, I'm worried that there will be yet more misery for ill and disabled people to come. 1
Assessments for disability benefit eligibility, such as PIP and the limited capability for work and work-related activity element of UC have been widely reported as being not fit for purpose and designed to make sure that people do not get the support they need. 2
Indeed, I remember describing them as 'like witch trials without the drowning'. But then they don't need to drown literally drown us, they just need to wait for the stress, anxiety and total lack of finances to kick in instead. I'm fortunate in that my lovely parents..3

#Thread It's a measure of the fact that the demonisation of disabled people has been ramped up recently, particularly in the last few weeks that I even feel the need to say this, but I'm gonna say it anyway: 1
I am proud of who I am, my disability is not my fault and I wouldn't change any part of it for anything. Yes, it frustrates me, yes I laugh about it, but it is part of who I am and without it I would be a completely different person. In fact I can't think of one aspect 2
Of my life that hasn't been impacted by, from the houses we've lived in to where I went to uni. That does not mean that I am my disability, but it does mean that I will fight ableism until I die, whether that be random twunts on social media or toxic government rhetoric. 2

#Thread Seven years ago today I applied for income -related ESA, at times the application process was very confusing, particularly the fact that during the initial call I had to do things like confirm my date of birth three times (surely once could have been enough) 1
And attempt to explain that I could not specify the number of hours per week I had attended the history and politics university course I had just finished because it varied so much between semesters as I'm sure a lot of UK uni students and staff can appreciate. 2
It took two calls to sort out this issue, and to confirm that I would infect need to provide medical evidence of my own unfitness for work for the first 13 weeks of my claim, despite initially being told it was completely up to my GP. With that having been sorted 3

#Thread. Let's start with earlier this week, when Liz Truss, likely to be the next PM, said at a hustings that the solution to solving the problem of having so many job vacancies was to 'encourage currently economically inactive people into work." The problem with this is 1
When she says 'encourage' what she really means is encouragement in the style of a protection racket as in 'nice benefits you got there, it would be a shame if something happened to them, get a job'. I worry that this means she's going to start blaming disabled people 2
For the nation's economic woes (gotta take the heat of the billionaires somehow, leading once again to a renewal of the culture of suspicion against people with disabilities which dominated the Cameron/Osborne years. Now Truss did say that 3

Right, rant time! #Thread I rang the passport office, About my rejected photo, because my wheelchair handles are in the background. got through and the bloke on the other end said that I would need to POST a letter from my GP explaining my condition. 1
So I rang my GP surgery, to ask for this letter, only to be told that I had to ask for it online in writing. I was also told that there may be a charge for the letter. Having filled in the request form and submitted it, I have no idea when anybody will get back to me.... 2
Honestly, the hoops we have to jump through to get what most nondisabled people take for granted! I mean, why should we have to post evidence when we've applied online? Why can't we submit the file digitally. And also, why should disabled people have to...3

#WAOpioidTrial Day 23 is now starting. Good morning!

Here's the AM link. Also it is snowing here this morning, WTF??

#WAOpioidTrial IANAL here but it seems like the state just got admonished a bit for trying to pull some exhibit back OFF the record after defense went to the expense of reviewing; state doubles down and says they are SURE it will be in; then tried to pull it. Judge said nope.
#WAOpioidTrial And now we resume McKesson's counsel cross-examining Dr. Daniel Ciccarone, MD, MPH. He's a widely respected harms reduction expert (among many other things). He's been testifying about the uptick in heroin/fentanyl use, generally.
