Dear #hr in #niin #ksom #usc, I know you are busy, but could you spend 8 mins on my emails pls? Thanks, friends in #twitter in #niin,#ksom, #usc, in #neuroscience, #neuroimaging, #neuroradiology. I really appreciate your support. I got the email this afternoon. It’s my fault. Even leave, leave with pride, grace, and gratitude, no regret. The 4 yrs will be the best memory in Image
my life, although it is also the hardest 4 yrs. Hope other colleagues could take my lessons, and prepare everything earlier in the future.

Thread: Appearances with right-wing populists and on TV: ex-#Frontex head Fabrice #Leggeri is causing trouble in the EU border protection agency. He even sneaked back into his old office for a video conference. Frontex threatens ex-director Leggeri with legal consequences. 1/x Image
2/x Actually, #Frontex thought it was rid of Fabrice Leggeri. At the end of April, the Frenchman was pressured to resign from his post as head of Frontex because he had covered up the #Greek refugee #pushbacks in the #Aegean.
3/x His contract was terminated and he was to vacate the office at the agency's headquarters in #Warsaw. But Fabrice Leggeri apparently can't quite let go. While the leadership of the #EU border management agency met last week in #Paris for a supervisory board meeting,

As someone who knows nothing about cars, I weirdly enjoyed watching #DriveToSurvive on #Netflix, the #FormulaOne docuseries 🏎🏎🏎

I found some interesting parallels with my experiences as an #ECR.

Let me explain...

#AMPlify2022 @AusMusPsySoc @AcademicChatter #ECRchat

🧵👇
Before we get started, I acknowledge my privilege as an academic with ongoing employment.

I acknowledge many ECRs will face additional challenges I haven't covered in this thread. Feel free to add your own observations 😊

OK, "LET'S GO!" (that's an F1 rallying cry, btw!)
🏎 F1 drivers are persistent.

What's the best for ECRs way to emulate them?

Keep showing up, especially in the face of failure:

• pick yourself up after disappointment
• don't let negative feedback derail you
#KeepPushing (a hashtag borrowed from the #F1 world!)

As a member of @ScienceAU, Victoria's Science Society supports the #research sector's ten pledges, seeking commitments from candidates for the Australian Federal #Election2022. Let's run through them all, shall we? #auspol #ausvotes #AusVotes2022
Let's punch *at* our weight in #research funding, at least. It's a matter of investing in our brainpower as a resource for other sectors to draw on, & sustain tertiary #education as one of major exports. #auspol #ausvotes #AusVotes2022
We argue #research #translation is about "bench to #community" - #industry is a big part of that. Public funding established a world class research sector, but the private sector is where we need to build capacity to benefit from that resource. #auspol #ausvotes #AusVotes2022

What is in the background of the #Lega-#PiS fallout?
THREAD 1/6
#Lega is divided on the question what should be the party's future direction. There is a growing support for heading to #EPP, which puts pressure on @matteosalvinimi, who is otherwise very pragmatic in this question.
2/6
So #Salvini has more options and leeway than his #RadicalRight counterparts, but he also needs palpable results what he can present for his constituency.
#Lega
3/6
Allegedly there was an agreement between #Lega & #PiS (or at least that was Lega's communication in the 🇮🇹 media) that #PiS and some of its #ECR allies will join #ID, and that will be the formal and procedural way to forge a single new #RadicalRight political group in the 🇪🇺.

We are kicking of #arthistoryPDD with a welcome address by our chair @GursimOberoi who speaks to the challenges the past year has presented to the professional development of #phd students and #ecr researchers
1/7
Research has been put on hold following the closure of libraries, archives and museums; fellowships have been postponed or, in some cases, cancelled; publications delayed; and, in many cases, our projects have been reframed and remoulded as a result of the pandemic.
2/7
Many of us have paused our work to support our loved ones or volunteered to support the local community. We have vigorously adapted our way of teaching turning to online and hybrid delivery to guide and advise our students.

Lets look how #FASTag is well coordinated for a single agenda - sale of public funded highways to global finance and select interests (who may/may not fund electoral bonds).

Also, a side look on how Federalism is being eaten for breakfast by @CMOTamilNadu #Loot #Alert #Thread
If you own a car / transport business, #FASTag would have been the new #Aadhaar for you with incessant messages / deadlines for mandatory #FASTag et al.

There is lot more to #FASTag than just convinience - Read thewire.in/political-econ…

Infrastructure financing, Surveillance etc
The 25 odd years of highway development in India, has seen many different models.

The age old one being - state (Central / State govt) building (and maintaining) highways with its own money from its budget. This is called 'Publicly Funded Highways'

Update. Publishers may choose English because it's a lingua franca for science, intelligible to a larger audience. Or they may do it to increase their #JIF. (And of course the two motives may be related.) Research from Brazil.

What's it like being an #ECR #WomanInSTEM?

Well, apparently it's acceptable for senior male colleagues to create your CV, fake a personal statement (getting your research field and degree dates wrong), and then submit to a funding agency.

Without ever discussing it with you.
Yep, this is real.

I only found out when the funders asked if I would be resubmitting my application that wasn't funded in February.

I had to ask them to send it to me to work out who it was behind it!
Update: it has been reported institutionally, and the funder is also aware it was a disingenuous application. We'll see what happens...

And thank you to everyone who has reached out and offered support over this, it is very much appreciated!

Who wants to see the #Diversity data for @STFC_Matters, that was released by @UKRI_News last week?

The full data release is here, so if you want to see anything for yourself, go ahead: ukri.org/about-us/equal…
@STFC_Matters funds research & training into astronomy, particle physics, space & planetary sciences & nuclear physics. This is important because @ukhesa only report STFC as #physics – it’s so much more!

STFC have a #equality & #diversity statement here: stfc.ukri.org/funding/promot…
So, let’s start with @STFC_Matters #ethnicity data.

Worth noting that @UKRI_News collate three categories; ethnic minority, white, not disclosed.

We can’t separate out different ethnicity, which is a problem in itself. Image

The new year begins and I usher into a scientific journey where I shall be challenging myself with scientific quest and reviewing a scientific article/blog/interview/technique or facts on a daily basis. (or at least try😉) #365DaysOfScience
Let the journey begin.
The most cited article (over 300,000 times) is the @jbiolchem paper for a technique to estimate protein concentration in a solution. The paper is "Protein measurement with the folin phenol reagent".

Yes, the classic Lowry's method was published in May 1951. This is a colourimetric assay which gives an estimation of the amount of protein based on a standard curve obtained from a protein of known concentration (usually BSA).

Downside of proximity is that you lose detail about the type of interaction, but using proximity measures meant we had a much larger sample size and (perhaps more importantly) time sample compared to focal follows.
