Britain’s equality watchdog, the Equality & Human Rights Commission (#EHRC), is supposed to be independent.

This #THREAD will show it isn't.

It's been “captured” politically & made a “tool of the culture wars”, with an agenda “based on what is useful to the Conservative Govt”.
Since 2020, experienced staff have been raising concerns about the ##EHRC’s independence, & forty of them made complaints, including bullying & harassment, about the Chair, Kishwer Falkner.

Consequently, staff are now wrongly demonised as "woke", & are now leaving in droves. Image
The media narrative, encouraged by the Board & the Govt, is partisan & reductive, & means Falkner cannot lose - if the investigation clears her, it will be portrayed as a victory against the “woke”. If she is not, she'll be portrayed as a victim.

They always use this playbook. Image

Disturbed to find you @omid9 promoting the "what is a woman" film currently promoted by every hard core harmful "gender critical" sewer dweller fascist here in the UK & elsewhere. Trans folk politically including trans kids are fighting for any place at all in our civil society.
Even the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission are actively tinkering with their views on established legislation (The Equality Act) to fine tune it to better facilitate the exclusion of (mainly) trans women from facilities they have the right to use going right back in time.

The #EHRC has been compromised by seeding a Chair that secretly colluded with Gender Critical players residing in 55 Tufton Street a ultra right den of poisonous whisperers in "decision makers" ears. 3/

Our response to the #EHRC letter:

Engender remain supportive of the introduction of a Bill to reform the Gender Recognition Act.
1/13
Nothing that has been proposed to date for the Bill would change the operation of the Equality Act as it relates to data, sports,& single-sex spaces; but in light of the recent letter sent to the Scottish Government by @EHRC, we feel it's important to reiterate our position.
2/13
On specific points within the letter, the EHRC calls for more detailed consideration on the basis of concerns relating to “collection and use of data, participation and drug testing in competitive sport, measures to address barriers facing women...

9 facts people tend to forget about the operation in #Tigray:
TPLF had rejected many calls for dialogue w/ the gov't, mocked efforts of #Ethiopia's respected elders & PM @AbiyAhmedAli. But some still think talks w/ the defunct group would be a magic wand to pacify Tigray. (1/9)
#TPLF launched several rockets to cities of the #Amhara Regional State & #Eritrea’s capital city-#Asmara. And yet misguided media narratives pictured both forces as belligerents. (2/9)
The #Ethiopia|n gov't has been busy rebuilding destroyed infrastructures by the #TPLF but the remnants of the group have continued to destroying infrastructures with renewed zeal as a major strategy of their “struggle” for the people of Tigray. (3/9)

There have been many recent HE reviews in the UK considering academic freedom & freedom of expression (free speech).

While occasionally some academics do feel unable to express themselves, Libertarians opportunistically exploit any situation & pour petrol on a faux culture war.
A major inquiry was conducted in 1996-97 by the National Committee of Inquiry into HE.

The Committee referred to three essential principles relating to institutional autonomy, academic freedom and institutional governance:
• institutional autonomy should be respected. While Govt set the policy framework for HE nationally, the strategic direction & management of individual institutions should be vested wholly in the governance & management structure of autonomous universities & colleges;

lawyers for @jeremycorbyn have failed to get the courts to force @UKLabour to release documents -including minutes or notes of a meeting between @Keir_Starmer and the former leader's supporters incl @LenMcCluskey and communications between the party leadership and Margaret Hodge
The @UKLabour lawyer denied that the documents being sought existed and the judge said -in effect- even if they did, they did not need to be disclosed in order to bring a case against the party over the suspension of the whip. Meanwhile discussions have continued
Behind the scenes on how the whip may be restored and if a full blown legal challenge can be averted. @jeremycorbyn's backers say it was wrong to suspend the whip when he had been restored to party membership by an NEC panel following an inquiry in to his comments re #EHRC report

David Feldman (@PearsInstitute), @b_mcgeever & I have written in the Guardian about the #EHRC's Labour antisemitism report, standing back from the factional tumult to understand what the findings mean for anti-racism. theguardian.com/commentisfree/… Here’s a thread summarising it:
2/ The noise and emotion in the aftermath of the report have drawn attention from its substance beyond the top line that Labour has been found responsible for harassment and discrimination. In the piece we draw out the implications for anti-racist politics in Britain
3/ It is now untenable to say that the volume of antisemitic narratives circulating among Labour member can be measured by cases alone. The cases were the tip of an iceberg, and didn’t include likes and retweets on social media. What does this say about Labour’s culture?

CONCLUSIVE!

The #EHRC has determined that Chris Williamson DID NOT contribute to ‘unlawful harassment’ by the Labour Party, despite desperately trying to make such a finding.

Even with the establishment’s backing, the EHRC’s sensationalised witch-hunt still failed.

1/5
The EHRC attempted to criminalise Chris for his defence of socialist comrades against a cynical smear campaign led by the Conservatives and the Israel lobby.

However, the discredited and institutionally racist Commission has proven itself to be a paper tiger.

2/5
This outcome is a vindication of Chris’s longstanding record of standing up to racism, which stretches all the way back to the 1970s when he was an active member of the Anti-Nazi League. His commitment to anti-racism could not be impugned, despite the EHRC’s efforts.

For people who have been involved in politics for a longtime, this is not the first documented outbreak of #LabourAntisemitism amongst the Far Left of the party but this time it is different for many reasons which I will now explain. 1/8
The last time @UKLabour had a truly Socialist leader was Neil Kinnock, who also found himself attracting a great army of undesirable members (as is always the case) under Socialism, many of whom were #AntiSemitic but he had most of them expelled from @UKLabour. 2/8
It may even have cost him the chance to become PM, but fortunately we will never know. so now fast forward to the election of #Corbyn as leader of @UKLabour a man with an extremely well documented past for siding with terrorist organisations - in particular anti-Israel ones. 3/8
