I am glad that Maha and Wafa al-Subaie are free and safe. Every #Saudi woman deserves to live freely and safely and with dignity in her own country. Until male guardianship is abolished, Saudi women will continue to escape: reuters.com/article/us-geo… #EndMaleGuardianship
“We are thrilled to announce that we are leaving Georgia. We are on our way to start a new life in a new country”
“keep reporting and writing stories about Saudi women. Many of whom are still trapped in abusive homes or spending time behind bars for disobeying their guardians.” #EndMaleGuardianship

Same #Saudi regime that has imprisoned without charge women’s rights activists since May and tortured them, including via water boarding. Same Saudi regime whose counter extremism agency made a public service announcement conflating feminism with terrorism. It’s not about “first”
This is typical #Saudi regime MO. #Saudi Arabia subjects women to a form of gender apartheid that requires all girls and women to have a male guardian that controls almost every aspect of their life. It’s not about “first.”
This same “first woman ambassador” like all #Saudi women has a male guardian. It could be her father, husband, brother and even son. It’s not about “first.”

The male guardianship system in #Saudi Arabia is a form of gender apartheid. It must be abolished. Until it is abolished, Saudi women will continue to escape and to seek asylum. They are escaping gender apartheid.
#EndMaleGuardianship
So central to the #Saudi regime is male guardianship that women’s rights activists who’ve long fought it have been imprisined without charge since May and tortured at the orders of Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman. Demand their release. #EndMaleGuardianship
These #Saudi women’s rights activists have long fought to end the male guardianship system. They have been detained since May and tortured at the orders of Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman. Remember them. Demand their release.

Long overdue:
- A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers introduced a resolution Wednesday calling on #Saudi Arabia to “immediately & unconditionally” release women’s rights advocates detained since May & tortured at orders of Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman washingtonpost.com/world/middle_e…
Among the resolutions, lawmakers call on #Saudi Arabia to end male guardianship system. HOW LONG HAS IT TAKEN TO GET ATTENTION FOR GENDER APARTHEID?! Long overdue!

Until I create a chronological thread of my opeds on #Saudi Arabia, here’s a collection of them starting from 2002. In many I use gender apartheid to describe the way women are treated. #EndMaleGuardianship
I’ve been writing about repression of women in #Saudi Arabia for 16yrs. I lived there during my teens & was traumatized into feminism there, I wrote a column for a Saudi-owned paper for 2yrs & was then banned, I devoted a chapter in my 1st book to it. We have a long relationship.
The unprecedented crackdown on women’s rights activists must be seen for what it is: an attempt to erase cross-generational feminist activism in #Saudi Arabia. The detained feminists and women’s rights activist are leaders of a social revolution that terrifies the #Saudi monarchy When this decade began, there was no political revolution in Saudi Arabia like those in Tunisia, Egypt and other countries of the “Arab Spring.” But a social revolution has begun now in Saudi Arabia.

Its vanguard is not a crown prince who claims to be an emancipator of women. The true leaders are the feminists he has detained and banned from travel for daring to demand their freedom.

Hundreds of women have tried to escape #Saudi Arabia in recent years, fleeing the strict male guardianship laws that control every aspect of their lives. These are the stories of some of those women via @Sophiemcneill @4corners abc.net.au/news/2019-02-0… #EndMaleGuardianship
All women fear the Dal Al Reaya — the state-run institutions where women who resist the male guardianship system or ‘shame’ their families often end up. Even women who go to the police to report a crime can be sent here. #EndMaleGuardianship All women fear the Dal Al Reaya — the state-run institutions where women who resist the male guardianship system or 'shame' their families often end up. Even women who go to the police to report a crime can be sent here. Their only way out is if a male guardian comes and collects them. Sometimes women locked in the Dal Al Reaya will agree to marry perfect strangers as a way of leaving.
In order to escape #Saudi Arabia, women need permission from their male guardian to travel. Saudi Arabia's far-reaching controls over women extend online, where men are able to grant travel permissions through a government-run app called Absher. #EndMaleGuardianship

To explain the origin story of how the #Maleguardianship law came about.
I must first tell the story of #MishaalAlSaud. She was a #Saudi princesses that was executed in 1977 for committing adultery. In sharia law, such crimes must be witnessed by 4 men during the sexual act.
Or if the person confessed in court three times. But when you are royalty the sharia rules don’t apply. #MishaalAlSaud was 19 years old when her father “King Fahad” sent her away to Lebanon for school. She met & fell in love with the #Saudi ambassador’s nephew #KhalidAlMulhallal
Both #MishaalAlSaud and #KhalidAlMulhallal made the mistake of meeting up with each other a couple of times when they came back to #Saudi. Soon enough word got out and they were both in trouble. So #MishaalAlSaud decide to fake her own death by drowning and flee the country.

Because I helped Rahaf, this “news” clip from MBC - 1st Arabic-language 24hr satellite channel (believed to have close ties to #Saudi royals) - says “Mona Eltahawy is a feminist extremist who hates men and wants women to have sex in the streets.”
I have clearly made it. In lieu of an official statement from #Saudi regime, I am taking this as their statement. It is propaganda, defamation & incitement all at once. This is why #Saudi regime poured so much money into Arabic-language media - so that they can use it like this.
In a 2006 journal article, Arab-American academic Marwan M. Kraidy stated that MBC was owned by members of the #Saudi royal family. I am drawing your attention @hrw @amnesty @stephenkalin and those who understand how the Saudi royal family and MBS operate to the above clip.
