🚨Breaking: The federal government just provided a public update about their plan to allow oil companies in the tar sands to release their toxic waste into the Athabasca River - a plan opposed by downstream Indigenous nations.

In short: the release option is still on the table.
Full paper here: canada.ca/en/environment…

I will let the impacted nations comment on the alternatives considered and the quality of the engagement process.

The situation as a whole, however, is a problem. đźš©đźš©đźš©
Oil companies created massive lakes of toxic sludge (tailings ponds), without a plan for how they would clean them up. This now forces Indigenous communities downstream to consider a risky proposal - accepting the release of industrial wastewater into the Athabasca River!

Highly problematic graphic by @VisualCap .

Blaming Asia for the plastic pollution crisis is a form of #environmentalracism and creates a false narrative about who is responsible for producing #plasticwaste.

Key narratives we need to confront at all times 🧵
♻️ We need drastic, scalable interventions to reduce, reuse and better manage #plastic across ALL economies.

🏭 Burning plastic [#incineration and waste-to-energy] are not acceptable solutions to the plastic crisis.
🚢 Exporting waste from wealthier nations to under-resourced nations is a form of #wastecolonialism and #environmentalracism.

🛍 The biggest #polluters are the corporations producing and marketing plastic which are headquartered in the global north.

It’s time to abandon the dirty, dangerous myth of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS):
đź’ĄStop subsidizing CCS.
đź’ĄStop permitting CCS.
đź’ĄStop using CCS to justify climate inaction.

And don’t pretend you’re a climate leader if CCS is part of your climate plan.
climatejusticealliance.org/cja-calls-to-e…
On behalf of our millions of members and supporters across the US & Canada, we call on policymakers to recognize that carbon capture and storage (CCS) is NOT a climate solution. It is a dangerous distraction driven by the same big polluters who created the #ClimateEmergency.
CCS is unnecessary. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are cheaper and cleaner than fossil fuels. CCS just makes dirty energy more expensive and more energy-intensive.

One Black person dying during #childbirth is too many. During this #BlackHistoryMonth, and every other month of the year, we’re resolute on the goal of improving access to high-quality health care for Black women. Image
FACT: When it comes to health care in the U.S., Black pregnant people experience the worst outcomes. The time is now: we must prioritize Black maternal health. So… how do we do it?
Access to health coverage, from birth control to maternity care, is crucial for a lifetime of good health for mother and child. #AbortionJustice Image

1. 🚨 Announcement!

I, with everyone, have dedicated my last five years of time & money to crowd sourced projects digging into Republican finances, writing as much as possible, & working to topple the far-right agenda.

I will still do this, but I'm narrowing my messaging.
2. My personal platform is equality, safe access, and inclusion of marginalized communities to natural areas, making marganilized communities partners and stakeholders in the environmental conversation, & including unsafe & dirty living conditions as a mental health issue.
3. I will also teach & encourage everyone, especially children, to tell their environmental story from their backyards & communities by using very basic equipment (such as cell phones) and how to use these stories to gain public awareness & stop #EnvironmentalRacism

This is because the SAME DAY in 2019 City Council approved a $95mil police academy they also approved a $20mil tax break for @HilcoGlobal to demolish the coal plant. blockclubchicago.org/2019/03/13/con…
It's no coincidence these battles were tied in 2019, nor that they're tied under #COVID19. Both corporations and police/prisons are taking advantage of the virus to undermine the health of Black/brown/poor/working communities #HellNoHilco #NoCopAcademy chicago.suntimes.com/coronavirus/20…
It makes NO SENSE for the city to give millions of $$$ to private polluters and the militarized police that protect them while we are in the midst of pandemic, struggling to meet the most basic healthcare needs of poor/working communities #COVID19 #HellNoHilco #NoCopAcademy

This is what streets in Little Village, Chicago look like right now.

@HilcoGlobal took advantage of #COVID19--a RESPIRATORY virus--to demolish coal plant in an immigrant community already struggling with respiratory health #HellNoHilco #LaVillitaRespira #EnvironmentalRacism Image
When @HilcoGlobal tries to claim that a spike in respiratory issues in the local community are complications from #COVID19 and not due to their reckless and irresponsible demolition, remember this moment #LaVillitaRespira #HellNoHilco #EnvironmentalRacism
"Despite community objections and calls for #Lightfoot to halt the demolition because #COVID19 is impacting the respiratory health of people across the globe, city officials permitted Hilco Redevelopment Partners to topple the smokestack." #HellNoHilco blockclubchicago.org/2020/04/11/aft…

Rep. Sylvestre Reyes (D-TX) & Rep. Bernie Sanders's (I-VT) argue on the House floor about Sanders's support for dumping nuclear waste into the backyard of low-income Hispanic families in Sierra Blanca. --> j.mp/2CWgSBj

That is #EnvironmentalRacism
FYI @mgranville1
@mgranville1 These arguments by Sanders don’t even make sense.

First, the Hispanic Member of Congress from that district opposed it. Real progressives would not do that to a majority-minority Hispanic community because it is the definition of environmental racism. (2)
@mgranville1 Second, Sanders’s argument was federalism??? Really?

He should look at an election map of Texas. Here is one from 2008.

The nuclear waste dump was to be placed in Sierra Blanca, a majority, low-income Hispanic community in the blue county in far West Texas on the map. (3)

Rant ahead: Recently, 10 african american residents of Duplin County, NC, successfully sued #smithfieldfoods for $50mil, citing noxious fumes resulting from their industrial swine lagoons. This was a huge win for the #EnvironmentalJustice and #environmentalracism movements!
Today, the win was slashed to $2.5mil from 50, based on the "Agricultural and Forestry Nuisance Bill" (house bill 467)- which, as of last year, limits damages to ONLY property value loss, completely excluding loss of quality of life.
Sponsors of the bill were NC Reps Jimmy Dixon and @JohnBellNC. Guess who their top campaign contributors are? North Carolina Pig Council, and, you guessed it, Smithfield. Tell me, gentleman- who do you really work for? Seems obvious to me. Time to drain the actual swamp.
