Global #Equinox Update #ExtremeWeather surveillance THREAD for the Southern Equinox 2023.
For comparison - here (quoted tweet) is last year's thread,There are lots of similarities with observable weather patterns & model forecasts as the two threads pertain to a similar state of the global energy balance.
The most notable differemce with the 2023 Equinox is that ENSO (the La Nina/El Nino oscillation) is moving into neutral which could result in a reduction of tropical convection and therefore less precipitation. However that is not yet cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analy…twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

#Equinox is also the moment when the incoming energy balance shifts from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere, and it was marked this year with some extraordinary temperature anomalies in the Arctic and Antarctic. Both caused by atmospheric rivers.

And this year the northern hemisphere #extremeweather season has a Herald, a designated tropical disturbance which the JTWC had thought might become a cyclone. Whilst early this morning a cyclone formation warning was cancelled, the storm appears to not be giving up so easily.
This @zoom_earth animation shows the last six hours of explosive convection which picked up quickly after the storm moved back over the sea in the Bay of Bengal.

🌸FOOD FOR THE EQUINOX🍂
Food plays an important roll at Higan (彼岸).

On the first and last day of the equinoctial week, rice dumplings (団子 'dango') are offered at the family altar. Rice cakes covered in bean jam (botamochi in spring and ohagi in fall) are presented mid-week.
Botamochi and ohagi are popular during the equinoctial weeks, when they are made as sacred offerings & enjoyed as tasty snacks.
Glutinous rice is soaked, cooked and formed into a ball. Around this ball a thick sweet bean paste is packed on.

And since I’m on the topic of #equinox , let’s talk about the #Pantheon here in #Rome - have you ever heard of helioarchitecure? Because it’s really cool. #talesofatourguide
1/?

🍂 First day of autumn - the autumn equinox is here!

🌕It is the equilibrium of day and night
🍂2/? -and this represents the light and darkness in our lives. The long summer nights have passed and we are now in a season of transition.

🏛What does this have to do with the Pantheon? It’s built according to helioarchitecture; architecture following the sun or its placements
3/?🌱Mainly the spring was considered as a safe reference to start certain agricultural works; so many days after the equinox, for example, some plants had to be pruned; after so many days, certain seeds had to be sown, and so on.

📅On the other hand, the equinoxes allowed to -

Today is the Spring or Vernal #Equinox, a day of equal night and day. To celebrate, a tour was due to take place @NMIreland Archaeology. So here instead, is a #TwitterTour by Archaeology Museum Educator, @trisha_ryan, of some facts from the tour #histedchatie #MuseumFromHome
There are many archaeological monuments and artefacts that are connected to solar or celestial symbols, including the Equinox. For thousands of years, people looked to the skies and their environment to help explain the world.
People expressed this in the monuments they built such as passage tombs and stone circles. The passage tomb of #Knowth has 2 tombs, both at due east and west, and is thought to be aligned to the rising and setting sun of the Equinoxes. Images from @newgrangeknowth

Good Morning, Cicely!
It’s the day before the #autumnalequinox, one of my favorite days of the year, when day and night are in perfect balance, the first official day of fall for those of us in the Northern hemisphere...
The word #equinox comes from the Latin ‘aequi’ meaning equal and ‘nox’ meaning night. This is the magic time of fall harvests and harvest moons, but for us up here on the Alaskan riviera, this time for peak viewing of the aurora borealis, or northern lights..
As many of you know, I’ve had a fraught relationship with these celestial fireworks; trying to capture a bit of their astral majesty with my earthbound and unworthy hands in sculpture form... Image

For the record, I know nothing about astrology.
I love Astronomy!!!
I was even on the core team during the repair the Hubble Telescope while the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) which was installed during Servicing Mission 4 (STS-125) in May 2009.
Astronomy (from Greek: ἀστρονομία) is a natural science that studies celestial objects & phenomena. It applies mathematics, physics, & chemistry, in an effort to explain the origin of those objects & phenomena & their evolution. I love looking at the stars.
Objects of interest include planets, moons, stars, galaxies, & comets; the phenomena include supernova explosions, gamma ray bursts, & cosmic microwave background radiation. More generally, all phenomena that originate outside Earth's atmosphere are w/in the purview of astronomy.
