Russia and China were masterfully wedged by the Nixon Admin and Kissinger with the help of Pakistan, which was then led by Gen Yahya.
Now, history has brought the two Cold War Rivals closer.
This will create new Geopolitical, Geoeconomics and Geostrategic risks for the USA.
The biggest foreign policy and strategic failure of the USA has been that it didn't see the thaw between Iran and KSA coming
The entire Muslim world is now bifurcated into Russian & Chinese Camps
Hardly any Muslim nation will back America if a war breaks out between larger powers
Pakistan, the only Moslem Power with nuclear weapons, is the closest Chinese Ally not just in South Asia but the whole world.
It's akin to Italy under the Axis Power cosigned Pact of Steel or how Austro Hungarian Empire was buttressing the Kaiser.
BRI's epicentre is Gawadar.

A paper published ahead of next week's meeting of the #FalklandIslands Standing Finance Committee shows that the retail price index for Stanley went up 1.7% in the first months of 2022 and 5.2% in the year to 31 March 2022
#CostOfLiving in the #Falklands
The paper says "The data points to an acceleration of price growth compared to previous quarters; although much of the year-over-year growth can be attributed to base effects on fuel prices (i.e. low fuel prices recorded one year ago)."
The paper also notes that there had been no evidence of inflation in the ‘Food and non-alcoholic beverages’ category in the previous two quarters but that this category added 0.6 percentage points to inflation in the latest quarter

NEW: I asked three naval warfare experts what the @USNavy should learn about the #Ukrainians sinking the #Moskva with a pair of cruise missiles. Here is what they told me, via @BreakingDefense. 🧵(1/12)

breakingdefense.com/2022/04/what-s…
Let’s set the scene. The Pentagon’s stated “pacing threat” right now is #China. These lessons are all in the context of what would happen if the worst happened & two world superpowers came to blows in the South China Sea. (2/12)

breakingdefense.com/2022/04/what-s…
First, cruise missiles are cheap & #China has plenty, says @CollinSLKoh. As the #Ukrainians demonstrated, a weaker force can focus their salvos. If they score one good hit, the ship may be out of action, even if it's not sunk outright. (3/12)

Continuing my Canberra in the Falklands research, I wanted to highlight the amount of improvised AA defences she had upon going into San Carlos water & weathering the air raids in ‘Bomb Alley’ on the 21st of May 1982.

The Canberra was transformed from luxury cruise-liner to Troop-ship in the days leading up to her voyage to the Falklands on the 9th of April 1982, her swimming pool was converted to a helicopter landing platform. 2.
Sometime during her voyage the need to arm the ship from Argentine Air attack was put into action. As did with most of the ships that entered San Carlos. Improvised AA defences were implemented. There was no shortage of GPMGs aboard already. 3.

I've been tweeting a lot about UK #OverseasTerritories not being part of the #Brexit deal and a bit more has emerged ...
#Falklands MLA @teslynbark has answered a q about #Brexit and the #Falklands on fb - highlights:

1 Original UK EU mandate didn't include OTs except for Gibraltar.

2 In May, EU said they didn't have a mandate to negotiate for their OTs and wouldn't negotiate on UK OT issues.
(2 possibly explains what @BorisJohnson said about EU "intransigence" in his Christmas message to the #Falklands, but wasn't mentioned when he replied to a pmq from @DerekTwiggMP earlier in the month)

Finally caught up with a bit more of what was said in the #FalklandIslands Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
It seems that the "ambitious" timetable for the review of the #Falklands constitution is now "impossible" and it won't be finished by May after all
Mention on one hand of public hearings taking oral evidence in New Year and a suggestion on the other that there may not be the appetite for further work after all!
A member of the public who had listened to the discussion in real time summarised it as "delay, delay and more delay"

This order published today allows the #FalklandIslands Legislative Assembly and the #SaintHelena Legislative Council to hold virtual meetings from 22 August ...
Earlier this year, a request had been made by the #Falklands Executive Council to allow LegAssy to meet virtually during #COVID19, primarily because MLAs isolating meant there was no quorum ...
Fortunately, the #COVID19 outbreak in the #Falklands was contained quickly and the Legislative Assembly was able to meet twice before the modification was made and, this week, will meet a third time before it comes into force!

The #Falklands have had a 14 day #quarantine (a quattordictine?) for some time ... but, initially, it was not legally binding and, latterly, it has been imposed by means of notices issued to individuals under other legislation (equivalent to Sch 21 of the UK Coronavirus Act)
#Quarantine is seen very much as the #Falklands' main line of defence against #COVID19 and military personnel coming to the #FalklandIslands now pre-quarantine in the UK before travelling - everyone else travels on a separate flight and isolates on arrival

There is an irony in the fact that, as Lord President of the Privy Council, #JacobReesMogg of all people will hopefully soon be advising the Queen to make an amendment to the #Falklands constitution that our MLAs requested to let them take part in Legislative Assembly remotely!
The #FalklandIslands Constitution is an Order in Council under the British Settlements Acts - formally, it is made by the Queen on the advice of her Privy Council, of which #JacobReesMogg is the Lord President - a decision was taken here on 6 April to request an amendment ...
The #FalklandIslands Constitution contains a quorum for the Legislative Assembly in the #Falklands that could not be met in the early stages of the #COVID19 situation - some MLAs were isolating because of age or health - others had go into isolation when they showed symptoms ...

The #FalklandIslands are in the process of getting "lockdown" regulations to deal with #COVID19, though with no confirmed cases outside the MPC military base they are not going to be applied for the time being and an announcement about the existing measures is due tomorrow.
The regulations have been made, but not yet formally published in the Gazette or on legislation.gov.fk (the #FalklandIslands statute law database) and will only if and to the extent that a further declaration is made ...
Travel to the #FalklandIslands is currently very limited (@LATAMAirlines flights suspended, reduced passenger capacity on MoD airbridge and restrictions on visas/visitor permits) and anyone arriving already has to complete 14 days quarantine

#COVID19 restrictions in the #Falklands have largely been implemented by largely unenforceable guidance that has largely been followed ... but legislation is on its way now
The new #COVID19 in the #Falklands will be adapted from the UK legislation but it appears an important lesson has been learned from the UK experience:
#FalklandIslands authorities really do seem to have been paying attention to lessons that can be learned from UK experience with lockdown regs - no fixed penalty scheme and prosecutions only in most serious cases

I have always wanted to explain to people how the #Falklands are run, so badly - #Blackadder fans will appreciate the importance of the comma!

Here's a thread about one aspect of that, inspired by this tweet:
The #FalklandIslands Constitution does not create a ministerial system, but a so called "portfolio" system has evolved.

There is no Prime/First/Chief Minister or Premier here, but MLAs take it in turns to be Chair of the Legislative Assembly ...
... except that when Legislative Assembly meets formally, it is not chaired by the Chair but by the Speaker, who is not an MLA but who is elected by the MLAs ...

#Falklands #COVID19 Q and A session with invited media

First question is about business support
Business issues identified in survey include staff retention and liquidity
Household issues also relate to financial worries
Initial measures already in place
More next week
200 applications expected under initial scheme - 12 received so far and first payments about to be made
Second question is about people commuting between Stanley and MPC
Policy is for anyone working at MPC to stay within complex
Steps being taken to make other interactions safer

#COVID19 legislation in the #FalklandIslands just published
An order postponing Thursday's referendum on a single constituency for 6 months is quite straightforward, but the Infectious Disease Control (Coronavirus) Regulations 2020 are a bit more substantial:
The regs (made under the Infectious Diseases Ordinance 2003) are not yet on legislation.gov.fk but are in a Gazette that has been emailed subscribers and are now in force with a 2 year sunset.
The powers under the regulations apply during a transmission control period, which will be started and ended by the Governor making and (hopefully, in the future) revoking a declaration that #COVID19 is a serious and imminent threat to public health in the #FalklandIslands ...

Representation and voting weight are the subject of a referendum in the #Falklands in just over 2 weeks time ... (cont'd)
... For the third time in just over 20 years, voters in the #Falklands are being asked if they want to change from having separate constituencies for the capital (Stanley) and the rest of the islands (Camp) to having a single constituency for the whole of the #FalklandIslands ...
... Before the change can be made, it must be approved on the 26th by 2/3 votes in *both* constituencies counted separately (which is not thought likely to happen) and even then LegAssy would not be obliged to pass the Single Constituency Bill ...

I had an unusual (for me) experience last week: I have sat on the press bench in the court the #Falklands many times, but, for only the second time in over 10 years, I was bobbing up and down at the lawyers’ table ...
... the reports afterwards by @roddycordeiro and @TraighanaSmith were fair and balanced (I haven’t seen @kyleknappett’s but have no doubt it was too) ...

... but there’s a (not critical of the people) but ...
... the media reports were inevitably compressed and could not possibly capture all of even a relatively short hearing, let alone all of the backstory or underlying issues ...

#FalklandIslands to have Public Register of Beneficial Ownership by 2023

Thread ...
... It’s been announced that @FalklandsGov has committed to introducing a Public Register of Beneficial Ownership in the #FalklandIslands by 2023, in line with a timetable set by the UK Government and with help and support from the UK to overcome “unique challenges”. ...
... Among those challenges must surely be the size of the #Falklands economy and the size and nature of the local company registry plus the legislative framework (a mix of the UK 1948 and 1985 Acts and some local variations) and the limited capacity for updating it. ...

Coverage of Tuesday’s session of the #UNGA 4th Committee:

un.org/press/en/2019/…

#Gibraltar was one #NSGT covered on Tuesday, as was #Anguilla and French Polynesia
The @GovAnguillaUK representative argued that the relationship between the UK and #Anguilla is “... not a modern relationship, nor is it one that offers respect to our citizens.”
The @GovAnguillaUK representative also made this interesting point at the #UNGA 4th Committee on Tuesday: “The United Kingdom’s bundling of Territories together for administrative reasons means that only the agendas of the most dominant members of such a forum receive attention.”

I’ve been following recent constitutional developments in the UK with popcorn but also from behind the sofa.

In the meantime, there will be a referendum in the #Falklands next year (the third in 19 years on the same issue) on a proposal to amend the one bit of the #FalklandIslands Constitution that can be changed locally under current rules ...

#OTD 3 Commando Brigade leave Portsmouth for the #Falklands aboard SS Canberra.
A section of BBC News from 9th April 1982: the Soviet Union describe the UK’s task force as "an immediate threat to international peace"

Fascinating to watch, the rest can be found here:
A CIA brief from 9th April states "the Argentines are reportedly lengthening the air strip in Port Stanley to accommodate A-4, MIRAGE, PUCARA, and C-130 aircraft and reinforcing the island with additional troops and air defence equipment"
