Though the notion of vampires was greatly exaggerated and adapted by the European writers through Carmilla, Dracula, Nosferatu to name a few, the concept of vampires predates everything that we’ve seen portrayed in the last century or so.🧵 ImageImage
Vampiric myths in and around the Indian subcontinent are as countless as constellations, with each culture, each tribe and subsets all boasting of their own mythos and lore, some so multifarious that it becomes difficult to pinpoint all.
(TW)
The true concept of vampirism is less to do with drinking blood but more so with cannibalism. In pre-silk route historical accounts, if we are to abandon folklores, the fearsome nomads of the great Steppes grasslands were said to drink the blood of their enemies, and sometimes

🚪😱HAUNTED GATES & DANCING CATS😼👻

It's been a while since I've done a #folklorethursday, so here's some local, rather less well-known tales.

Demizu was once home to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's lavish palace 'Jurakudai' (聚樂第), and the area has many strange wonders.
#Kyoto #京都 ImageImageImageImage
Kannon-ji's 'Gate of 100 Lashings' (観音寺 百叩きの門) belonged originally to the prison at Fushimi Castle (伏見城). When the castle was dismantled the doorway was gifted to the temple🏯🚪🩸😰👋

The gate is just 1 of the '7 Wonders of Demizu' (出水の七不思議).
#Kyoto #京都 #出水 ImageImageImageImage
Before prisoners were set free they underwent a final punishment at the prison gate...a warning to stay on the straight & narrow.
They were lashed 100 times with a piece of split bamboo across the back. It was agonizing, & sometimes deadly!

Oh dear lord, great spirit divine,
Creator of all things, above and sublime,
What is to become of me, in this moment of time,
As I exist, lost and alone, in this world of grime? Image
If not me, then who, to navigate this path,
Of despair and darkness, where hope takes a bath,
Am I to be an orphan, for all my days to come,
With no one to hold my hand, in this world so glum?

If not now, then when, will I find my way,
Out of this abyss, where I'm lost every day,
Am I to lose in life's race, from now on,
Or will I find the strength, to rise at dawn?

Imagine, if you will, a world in which chaos reigns supreme.

A world in which the rain falls down in torrents, flooding the streets and homes of those who call it home. In the midst of this deluge, one man stands alone, desperate for salvation.

#KAOS ImageImageImage
He cries out to a higher power, begging for someone to take the blame for the tragedy that has befallen him.

The water rises around him, threatening to consume him, and he knows that he is powerless to stop it.

#KAOS ImageImageImage
In the midst of this chaos, he wonders whose star is falling, whose fortunes have been lost in the torrential downpour.

He watches as the world around him is washed away, piece by piece, until there is nothing left but a desolate wasteland.

The Great Yellowing is not yet upon us (ginkgo leaves will reach their golden peak around November 23rd), but you've probably already smelt autumn in the air.
When the fruit from female ginkgo trees falls & begins to rot, the butyric acid in the skin gives off a vomit-like odor🤢
🌳THE UPSIDE DOWN GINKGO🔃

Nishi Hongan-ji's (西本願寺) famed 400 year old 'sakasa-ichō' (逆さ銀杏 'upside down ginkgo') is so-named because when the leaves have fallen it looks surprisingly like roots reaching up to the sky.

👹'TOMB OF THE BEASTS'😱

In 1611, during excavation of the Takase Canal (高瀬川), Suminokura Ryōi (角倉了以) discovered a stone pagoda. Further investigation revealed that he had unearthed the tomb of the 'traitor' Toyotomi Hidetsugu (豊臣秀次 1568-95).
#folklore #Kyoto #京都
Hidetsugu was the nephew and heir of Japan's de facto ruler, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉), but in 1595 he dramatically fell from grace and was forced to commit seppuku at Mt Kōya.

His grave became known by many names, including the "Beast's Mound" (畜生塚 "Chikushō-zuka").
It is unclear why Hidetsugu was so abruptly put to death, but the most likely explanation is the unexpected birth of Hideyoshi's son in 1593.
When Hideyori (秀頼) survived his first years, Hideyoshi no longer needed an adopted heir & Hidetsugu may well have thought about a coup.

What is 'The Song of the Roots of Hithaeglir' and where does it fit into #Tolkien? Is #TheRingsOfPower making up new lore?

This goes out to my fellow Tolkien aficionados who are mulling over its purpose in the ROP story🧵

#tropspoilers #fantasy #folklore Image
1. What is `The Song of the Roots of Hithaeglir`?

Well, Mellons, in the words of Elrond himself, it is `An obscure legend regarded by most to be apocryphal`. Elrond is underscoring the point that this legend is folklore.

[A meta point: #Tolkien is based in folklore!]

Now, this is what makes folklore interesting— Their origins are often based in truth.

Not literal truths but something akin to parables & fables that HINT to the truth. Afterall you have heard it said, "the truth is [more frightening] than fiction". Image

Having a #TTRPG #Monster #Book inspired by the #Folklore of other people, being made in collaboration with people all around, was great!
We have a rich and varied #Folklore in Brazil. We have stories that trace all the way back the native people and their rich culture. Legends that came all the way from Africa. Stories and fantasy tales from Europe too. All mixed up in our imagination. To adapt that to #TTRPG? YES

🦴😇GUARDIANS OF THE DEAD🗿🕯️

In 1903 the head priest of Nenbutsu-ji (念仏寺) and neighbouring Fukuden-ji (福田寺) began to gather up stone Buddhist statues from all around the local area.
By the time he was finished they numbered 8000!

From ancient times the poor (and not so poor) abandoned the dead in Adashino (化野), an area that now equates with the stretch of land between Nison-in (二尊院) & Nenbutsu-ji (念仏寺).
By the Heian period it had become 1 of Heian-kyō's 3 Great Crematory Grounds (三大葬地).

We often discuss and refer to the Bhagavad Gita but we rarely discuss or highlight the short but meaningful conversations that took place between Shri Ram and Vibhishan (Ravan's half brother). In this thread, I will be throwing shade on one such insightful conversation.
When Shri Rama was fighting with King Ravana, he did not have a chariot. Vibhishan chimed in and stated that he will be unable to win against a powerful king like Ravan without a proper chariot.

That is when Shri Ram told Vibhishan about dharma(duty):
1) Bravery and patience are the two wheels of my chariot.
2) Truth is the flag of my chariot and strength, decisiveness, kindness and duty are the four horses and these horses are tied by the rope of forgiveness and equality.

For over 400 years, history has been haunted by Anarkali, the beautiful court dancer who was buried alive by Emperor Akbar, for her love affair with Prince Salim (Akbar’s son and the future Emperor Jahangir). But is the story fact or #fiction? The truth will surprise you! 1/11 Image

The grave bears the couplet in #Persian: ‘Ah! If I could behold the face of my beloved once more, I would thank God until the day of resurrection’. It is signed by ‘Majnun Salim Akbar’ ('Enamoured Son of Akbar'). It’s the only clue we have. 3/11

At an elevation of 5,029 m, Roopkund Lake is very remote. One theory is that these are the remains of a King, his family and attendants, who died here while on a pilgrimage 1,000 years ago. Other theories include fallen soldiers during war and victims of an epidemic. 2/5 Image
The mystery deepened recently, when studies revealed some astonishing results. The deceased were from diverse ethnic groups. More incredible, they belonged to different time periods! This means they did not all die from a single catastrophic event. 3/5 Image

🏹THE 'ROBIN HOOD' OF JAPAN🥷

On 8th October 1594 the 'bandit' Ishikawa Goemon (石川五右衛門) and his young son were thrown into a boiling vat of oil beside the Kamo River.
As a warning to others the giant cauldron remained in place until a flood swept it away.
#Kyoto #folklore
The story goes that Goemon, in revenge for the murder of his wife Otaki and son Gobei, crept into Fushimi Castle (伏見城) to assassinate the despot ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉). As he drew close to the sleeping Toyotomi he knocked over a small bell and was caught.
#Japan
Like England's 'Robin Hood', so many legends surround Goemon and his band of outlaws that it's difficult to unpick fact from fiction.
It seems that a man was executed by being boiled alive in oil by the banks of the Kamo-gawa, but beyond that we know very little.

A Greek myth tells that the garland of daffodils worn by Persephone was transformed from white to yellow by the touch of Pluto as he stole her away to the Underworld. She was permitted to return to Earth each year when the daffodils bloom & bring spring #folklore #SaturdayMorning
Though Pluto is usually known as the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Hades, sometimes he is referred to as 'Pluto' in Greek myths and legends. 'Pluto' or 'Pluton' was given as an alternative name for Hades, which was a name with much darker connotations. britannica.com/topic/Hades-Gr…
I was wondering about the connection between the god Pluto and the planet so did a little more research. I now feel an affinity with Pluto, or the planet at least...the name was suggested by another Venetia! earthsky.org/space/this-dat…

🐸😼FROLICKING ANIMALS & AN ANCIENT TEA FIELD🍵🌿
The Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga (鳥獣人物戯画), a set of four scrolls depicting anthropomorphic animals, is considered by many -though it features no words- to be the earliest form of manga (漫画) in Japan.

#Kyoto #Japan #京都 #folklore ImageImageImageImage
Kōzan-ji's (高山寺) precious Chōju-jinbutsu-giga (鳥獣人物戯画 'Scrolls of Animals Frolicking as Humans') gently makes fun of religion, the court, and the human condition. Monks and nobles are depicted as rollicking rabbits, frogs, monkeys, cats & other animals.
#Kozanji #高山寺 ImageImageImageImage
The 4 scrolls are thought to have been created by the artist-monk Toba Sōjō (鳥羽僧正 1053–1140), though the 3rd & 4th (in notably different styles) may well date to the 13thC.
Certainly Toba completed paintings very similar in style during his lifetime.

⛩️SEIMEI'S SHRINE⭐️
It may be small, and is perhaps not as attractive as other nearby shrines, but Seimei-jinja's (晴明神社) grounds are filled with interesting monuments and memorials to Abe-no-Seimei (安倍晴明 921-1005) and his mysterious life.

1) SHIKIGAMI (式神)

Shikigami are somewhat unruly spirits summoned by onmyōji (陰陽師) to serve them. Invisible to almost everyone but the summoner, they would -for the most part- act like normal servants, performing household chores or secretarial duties.
#Japan #式神 #folklore
Fearsome in appearance, the shikigami's powers were connected to the strength of their master. Thus it is of no surprise that Seimei (安倍晴明) was said to have had 12 'shikijin' (式神), mostly performing simple tasks such as guarding his residence or opening gates.

🪄ABE-NO-SEIMEI🦊
Abe-no-Seimei (安倍晴明 921-1005) is often thought of as the 'Merlin of Japan'.
Celebrated as Japan’s most successful onmyōji (陰陽師), Seimei served 6 emperors, & thanks to a prominent career and long (sickness free) life came to be viewed as a magical figure. ImageImageImageImage
Long after he had died, Seimei was the subject of countless stories and miraculous legends.

As an onmyōji (陰陽師) Seimei worked in the palace's onmyō-ryō (陰陽寮 'Bureau of Yin-Yang Divination'), responsible for geomantic and spiritual matters.
#folklorethursday #Japan #Kyoto ImageImageImageImage
Amongst his many tasks was onmyō (Yin-Yang divination), tenmon (天文-astronomy), koyomi (暦-calendar making), & rōkoku (漏刻-time keeping).

Seimei was charged with protecting the court by predicting future events, something he became so adept at that he was in constant demand. ImageImageImageImage
