1/2 A growing number of folks realize that California is where they get their produce from & it's been slammed by forest fires, floods, etc. so they are going to grow their own veggies this year and escape the high prices in the grocery chain stores.
2/2 An estimated two-thirds of all produce consumed in Canada is imported from the U.S. accounting for approximately 37% of Canada's fresh fruit imports in 2021. California exported $4.8 Billion to Canada, including: $1.7B in fruits and nuts & $203M in vegetables and roots.
I live on a Gulf Island where the best weather conditions found in Canada are found so I purchase FRESH produce from organic farmers at farm gates and at Farmer's Markets twice weekly. Hubby also grows some of our veggies.
Are you now or will you be growing your own produce?

Last night, a professor walked into a night class for the first time since 2016. Here's what happened:
I was teaching at another campus -- not my primary employer -- after their night class professor couldn't teach this semester. I'd previously taught at this institution and was thrilled to have the chance to have a night class once more, because I LOVE TEACHING THEM.
Registration numbers fluctuate a lot in the first days of a semester, but this class has about 40 students. A mix of majors and non-majors. Age range is 17-42. Some athletes, a few gamers, lots of "typical" (whatever that means) residential college students.

Today, agri stakeholders & 🇪🇺 representatives are discussing the future of food & farming #AgriOutlook

But given the last attacks on green farming reforms, the @EU_Commission’s event might recommend sticking plasters rather than look at long-term solutions for #foodsecurity

Agribusiness & right-wing political allies are using the war in Ukraine as a pretext to water down #EUFarm2Fork

They claim global #foodsecurity is under threat & we need to ↗️ food production. How? With more synthetic #pesticides & #fertilisers of course!

There's no EU #foodproduction issue!

Global production of grains & wheat, leading 🇺🇦🇷🇺 food exports, is high & there's no global food supply shortage

The industry's narrative is just a smokescreen to maintain industrial agriculture 🏭

🚨 Check out our latest paper in @IJBNPA

We ask "Is high food insecurity the new normal?"

Our study showed the prevalence of #foodinsecurity in #Tasmania #Australia was 28% during lockdown, 20% after restrictions eased and 23% at 1 year post lockdown.

doi.org/10.1186/s12966… Image
Food insecurity is unlikely to return to pre-pandemic levels (or lower) without intervention!

Vulnerable groups such as young adults, temporary residents and families with dependent children are still struggling to put healthy food on the table every day. Image
The Tasmanian Government know that emergency food relief is NOT the solution to #foodinsecurity.

BUT substantially MORE investment is required for initiatives if they are serious about building food system resilience & reducing #foodinsecurity

I truly do not understand the fuss about having fancy cookware? Amber & I use our @AllClad pans & #Shun knives daily. Not cheap, but they are tools to create meals. We have larger issues for everyday Americans than what we cook in. #FoodInsecurity causes many to NOT EAT.#FlipWA03
@AllClad You can't buy cookware with an EBT card. You can't buy pre-cooked food with it either. You can buy ingredients. Does NO ONE SEE THIS PROBLEM??? People want to complain about how people use their SNAP benefits, but we do not make sure they have the TOOLS to use them. #FlipWA03
@AllClad Give me some onions, carrots, a chuck roast, some beef stock, and seasonings; with the tools we have pot roast for dinner. Without the tools (pans, knives, fuel for cooking) you have raw food. We must address the #FoodInsecurity and make sure those in need can prepare their food!

Have you read the @LancetCountdown’s new report on health and climate change? Check out @UHF_groups’ key takeaways 🧵👇 Image
1) Climate change is impacting weather, #ecosystems, and human systems. This poses a threat to human #health. For example, young children, older people, and marginalized communities are more susceptible to health risks associated with high temperatures and #heatwaves. Image
2) High temperatures can reduce the frequency and duration of physical activity. Without #exercise, people are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other #NCDs. Image

Thanks to the work of @HEResearch, we now know the impacts and benefits of universal free school meals. Thanks to this thread, you know, too. 🧵
Universal free school meals increase the number of students participating in such programs in nearly all cases, and reduce #foodinsecurity among students and families with lower incomes.
Universal free #schoolmeals improve the quality of diets among students in most circumstances. Strong #nutrition standards ensure the inclusion of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

This morning we saw something we will NEVER forget.

We were at the #Walmart in Southeast #Calgary. We were shopping for some groceries when my stepson saw someone take a package of meat and put it under their shirt and then slowly walk over to their cart. #Food #Hungry #Alberta
This person had very few things in their cart. My stepson knows what I do here at @HarvestHillsYYC & he asked if we could help them.

I said yes we could but that this person would feel ganged up on if we all walked over to them, so I told him to stay here and that I’d walk over.
I walked over to where they had their cart and said “I know what it is like to struggle. I would love it if you’d let me help you and I’d like to pay for your groceries.”

This person looked up at me and said “did you see me take the meat?” I said “yes I did. I’d like to help”.

New Household Pulse covering Dec 9 -21 just released, underscores how desperately relief is needed.

Estimated #foodinsecurity at a pandemic high: 24% overall; 31% among those w/kids. Image
Share reporting sometimes/often not enough to eat last week continued its climb.

18.3% of those w/kids said they didn't have enough to eat.

Really looking forward to seeing these numbers come back down as relief gets into hands of families. Image
The broadest measure is up, too, but not back to its COVID high from July.

Broad measure includes sometimes/often not enough to eat, PLUS "enough, but not the types of foods we wanted." Image

"When the pandemic struck, the US Dept of Agriculture set aside $16 billion in emergency aid to farmers, who were by then destroying their crops, but spent only $3 billion to actually purchase their fresh produce, dairy products and meat and distribute them to the hungry."
"Restaurants, which had employed more than 12 million Americans before the pandemic, were closed by public order but received no bailout.

Airlines in the United States, which currently employ about 700,000 people worldwide, received $25 billion and carried right on flying."

We are calling for a $500m national #EdibleGardening fund as a necessary and urgent investment in public and community #health to be co-financed by Federal, State and Territory governments.

We’re in a national emergency, and we must respond accordingly. #urbanagriculture
Dietary-related ill-health and mental illness cost Australia around $200 bn every year.

With COVID-19 and the climate emergency, these costs will rise and more will experience #hunger and #foodinsecurity. In a country as wealthy as #Australia, there is no excuse for this.
The levels of food poverty and dietary-related ill-health amongst #FirstNations communities are a matter of national shame.

Edible gardening has immense power to do good, as our national #PandemicGardening survey showed.
