#InternationalWomensDay2022

I've a number of tributes to pay on this important day.

The first must obviously go to the women of #Ukraine

This picture demonstrates their suffering & their personal courage

I stand with them in #Solidarity

Photo from the front page @thetimes
#InternationalWomensDay2022

It's a strange start to this tribute, but today is the 21st anniversary of my Dad's death. His life and of his Mother, Mary Breheny, is couched in real courage through #MotherAndBabyHomes #MagdalenLaundries

#Justice is coming!
#InternationalWomensDay2022

I pay tribute to #BreedaMurphy from the #TuamMotherandBabyHomeAlliance

Her passion, compassion and determination against @cnalive @merrionstreet to deliver the stories & change of #Survivors #MotherAndBabyHomes & #Magdalene story is inspirational

The #Zapatista tour of #Ireland, a long aul’ thread (but pix and vids!) to wrap up

In 1994 indigenous peasants in the mountains of SE Mexico rose up against #neoliberal capitalism, their latest struggle in 500 years of resisting colonialism…

#LaGiraZapatistaVa #EZLN Zapatista women at La Realidad
If you need a backgrounder, here's Mick McCaughan, ex-Latin American correspondent for the Irish Times and Guardian introducing why the #Zapatistas matter:

27 years later, they hold liberated territory the size of Munster –

governing themselves from below

with a powerful #womxn’s movement

practicing #AgroEcology

and with their own culture, education system, community media...

Imagine, for the sake of argument, that there are two distinct cultures: Irish and European.

An Irish family travels to a European city on an informal 'cultural exchange', on this occasion in the form of a house swap with a couple living in an apartment.
It's summer. The streets, and the apartment block, are pleasant and quiet. The Irish visitors love their short walks to the shop. This being a European apartment, there's a communal laundry in the basement. There's a reservation system for using the washing and drying facilities.
Each machine has a number. Residents write their name and apartment number on a timesheet to reserve a slot for doing their personal laundry.

One of the Irish visitors, hypothetically, strolls down to the basement with a bag of dirty clothes to check out the facilities.

Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves are a wonderfully informative way of presenting survival outcomes over time. But how do we interpret them? Survival analysis determines the probability of a binary outcome (aka an event or a failure)
2/15
Survival means the event being studied has not occurred yet - the patient is still alive if you’re analysing mortality, the baby has not been delivered if analysing births, the patient has not yet met whatever criteria you have decided constitutes an event in your study.
3/15
In medical research, the binary outcome of interest is commonly survival vs death though other outcomes/events can be used. KM curves are a visual way of showing the fraction of patients living over time after a treatment, or lack of treatment if in a control group.

1... #silverstrand #beach #galway has been my go-to place this past decade; offering me much needed solace since March, swimming almost everyday, to clear the head, disconnect, recharge. Yesterday evening, changing in the Galway style, under your towel, discreetly...
2... respecting fellow swimmers, I noticed a 40something man intently watching 2x20ish women changing. Only four of us were under the shelter, though the area was busy w/ swimmers&walkers. “Hey, maybe you could stop watching the young women changing and just look straight ahead”
3.. I say, after few moments of watching him watch them. He does. For a minute. Then reverts to watching them. Obviously. Not the odd glance. “Hey, we do our best here to change modestly, mind our own business, could you stop watching those young women changing?” I say.

Both @LeoVaradkar and @PatKennyNT were on #Newstalk today complaining about lazy people on €350 a week who don't want to go back to work.

Isn't it amazing people on €200,000-plus a year can convince us the poor, low paid, and most vulnerable should be the focus of our ire?
And what does it say about the "booming" economy we are supposed to have had, if thousands of people would rather the emergency #Covid_19 payment than returning to precarious, insecure, low paid jobs?

#IrelandLockdown
I know very many people here in #Galway in tourism-related businesses, with big mortgages, who are sick with worry that their jobs won't be there when the #coronavirus pandemic ends.

They find such comments insulting and hurtful, and they hate being unemployed all of a sudden.

I suppose we can safely say that now #TheFrighteners have been so successfully and publicly put on a certain sector their combined angst will spew a diarrhoea of spin & warp whilst trying to use THAT VERY THING to generate $ÂŁEs Some with automated AdTech software already bought.
2/ Some bought by gormless companies, by mistake, some in full knowledge or partial knowledge of what it could do. It will be interesting as time goes on to see who apparently DIDN'T CARE about the likely instigation of its more negative 'dark' capabilities looking to 'side-step'
3/ or even 'wrong-foot' Irish & EU regulation standards, & possibly law. This too is a kind of #climatechange & #ClimateAction in itself, a would be mammoth untouchable iceberg of 'dominion' & 'control' being melted out into an ocean of citizens' scrutiny & advancement for change
