National DNA Day:

🧬April 25

🧬Commemorates the day in 1953 when Watson, Crick, Wilkins, Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal @nature on the structure of DNA

🧬Also commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003, took 13 years

DNA Double Helix:

🧬The two #DNA strands are reverse-complements

🧬Reading one strand in #reverse order and exchanging each base with its #complement gives the other strand

🧬A and T are complements, C and G are complements

DNA Sequence: AGTAGCAT
Reverse-Complement: ATGCTACT
In #Each DNA Strand:

🧬Pull the #DNA double helix apart, leaving the two single DNA strands

🧬The population (or occurrence) of every DNA sequence in that single-strand is #equivalent to the population of its reverse-complement DNA sequence in that same single-strand

Data Needs A Home:

🧬The population of every DNA word is equivalent to the population of its reverse-complement DNA word in the SINGLE-STRANDED human genome

🧬Population count of 1.4 trillion DNA words

🧬Does anyone want a copy of this data before files are deleted?

#Genomics
Can You Use This #Data?

🧬Demonstrates the inherent inversion symmetry structure for all DNA elements in the single-stranded genome

🧬Demonstrates the absence of analog symmetries between reverse pairs and complement pairs of DNA elements

Do You Know Anyone 🏷 Who Can Use This Data?

🧬The number of times every #DNA element (1-nt to 20-nt) occurs in the single-stranded genome

🧬This inversion symmetry structure is also maintained at the level of each individual #chromosome, except chromosome M (mitochondrial DNA)

Well so this is an interesting thread and since it touches on #biotech I did want to mention a few things 1/
First, the value of "making the world a better place" that @Noahpinion mentions is right on the money. Everyone I've met in biopharma is dedicated to this idea and yes, it's likely many are making less than they could elsewhere. 2/
And, it's an amazing time in biopharma! Cellular therapies of various sorts, Gene editing, CRISPR, #genomics--holy cow are there exciting things going on! BUT...3/

A reflection back on the #NHS review (topol.hee.nhs.uk) and some differences between #US and #UK #healthcare:
1. The #1 source of jobs in both countries is from healthcare, which continues to rise with a steep slope (mostly non-physicians)
The #US now spends more than $11,000 per person for healthcare, while the #UK ~$4,000. Yet life expectancy has declined in the #US for each of the past 3 years, while it continues to increase in the #UK (graph adopted from @OurWorldInData)
3. The @commonwealthfnd ranks the #UK first and the #US last of 11 countries overall, with differences in 5 sub-categories charted here

Now reading the the #TopolReview report - Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future. It's an illuminating read topol.hee.nhs.uk #DigitalHealth
It's clear that a lot of effort has gone into the #TopolReview - it paints a glorious vision of what healthcare would look like over the next 20 years (for both staff and patients) - enabled by technology such as #genomics, #AI and #robotics
For me the #Topolreview has too narrow a focus. It's been commissioned by healthcare, yet we know that with an aging population, many people with long term conditions have to rely upon #socialcare as well. We need joined up thinking, imho.

Went to a great school in #medellin & at 17 started #medicine not because I wanted to be a clinician but because I liked the #science & my family and #mentors told me #medicine was broader and could open more doors for me #VoicesIWS #Thread☝️@IWS_Network

A program by @IWS_Network to promote awareness about the challenges & lessons learned by #Immigrant and #International #WomenInScience

I was born & raised in Chicoral, Colombia. A tiny town in the middle of the Andes Cordillera.
I attended Nuestra Señora del Rosario school, located in Espinal, 15Km away from Chicoral. Due to the high heat by noon, all schools start really early back home. This meant, I had to wake up at 5am to attend school every morning since I was 4 years old. #VoicesIWS
I did well in math and science in elementary and high school, so I chose to study clinical microbiology. Although coming from a low-middle income family, I was able to attend university, thanks to my parents’ effort to prioritize education over other commodities. #VoicesIWS

Functional Genomics:

📌Describes the relationship between an organism’s genotype (genetic makeup, DNA sequence) and phenotype (observable traits) on a global scale

📌A key characteristic is the genome-wide scale, rather than a more traditional “gene-by-gene” approach

DNA→RNA→Protein:

📌Genes:
-Blueprint for life
-Made of DNA
-Act as instructions to make proteins

📌Gene Expression:
DNA sequence is first copied to make an RNA molecule (transcription),
which is then "decoded" to build a protein (translation)
