(suite⏬)

Out now! Has #globalisation really peaked for Europe?🧵
Check out the new policy brief by @Lucian_Cernat

2/5 This paper builds on the recent arguments put forward by Richard Baldwin and others debunking the myth that we enter a period of de-globalisation.
3/5 @Lucian_Cernat argues that globalisation is a complex phenomenon that requires detailed, firm-level indicators going beyond simple aggregate metrics.

.@Cold_Peace_: What stands out for #Indiaat75 is that it is a stabilising actor. It is fairly remarkable that #India has risen quickly. In stark contrast to China's position, India is treating other countries with respect and has been a friend of the #West.

#Raisina2022
.@Cold_Peace_: It is very important to distinguish between criticism in #freepress and government policies. The #US government policies have been consistent in the last two decades. All countries want to do more business with #India.

.@DrSJaishankar: Three things keep me up at night — the shocks that the international order is experiencing, particularly in the past two years—the #COVID19 pandemic, #Afghanistan & #Ukraine, & the friction between the #West & #Russia, the #USA and #China

#Raisina2022 @MEAIndia
.@DrSJaishankar: You need to develop an operational matrix to respond to a changing world. In our case, especially since 2014-15, we have had greater clarity on how we engage the world—concentric circles, neighbourhood first, but also a conscious policy engaging the major powers.

Its... a reflection of Hubris, of the United States as a hyperpower. Of globalisation starting to make itself felt. We live with the consequences today.
There was the idea that China's governance might converge to Western norms. Had examples of village elections at that time. Looking back it was possibly wishful thinking.

In exactly one month, I'll be leaving Bertelsmann Stiftung and start a new challenge. But before I leave, I would like to (re-)share some of the highlights of my work over the last five years. So join me for a little time travel and lots of still relevant research!
When I joined @GED_Tweet in 2016, the #trade world seemed still ok: the WTO still had the Appellate Body, TTIP was a political priority, Brexit had not happened and Trump was still an unlikely presidential candidate. Lots was going to change...
One of my core projects was research on public opinion and #trade. Our first publication was triggered by the intensifying debate on TTIP in Germany - but went beyond that: bertelsmann-stiftung.de/en/publication…

An unexpected manifestation of the pandemic is the bifurcation of the global order in a way unseen since the Cold War. It begs the question—is the world witnessing the beginning of a new bipolar era of global competition? A thread 🧵#GlobalSystem #geopolitics #RaisinaFiles
In the presence of a hegemon, there is always a process of polarisation that leads to the creation of a secondary system organised around a pole consisting of a single competitor or a group of rivals that seek to undermine the incumbent’s global power supremacy.
A global reserve currency is not possible nowadays without global power projection capabilities
that enable the US to control the interconnected flows of goods, capital, services, data, & protect trade & transport routes from disruptions that might result in major supply shocks.

Far-right parties are currently gaining momentum & exerting parliamentary influence in diverse countries such as the UK, Hungary, the USA, Austria, Sweden, Germany, & Denmark.

Far-right terrorism has increased dramatically.

We ignore this at our peril.

journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…
Far-right recruitment discourse offers an affective script of feeling angry, insulted, & ashamed, as well as courageous, proud, & hopeful.

Research shows how affective–discursive practices are employed to create gateways to radicalization and ideologically motivated violence.
Within fascism, the myth of #palingenesis, that is “national rebirth from the ashes,” is continual and key to the motivation of political action & violence: 'heroism' is the “psychological recompense for fascist political activism.”

"In the name of economic growth, we've sacrificed #ecosystems, and we've exhausted the women and men in the economy, by subjecting them to huge pressure from the #globalisation of competition and the deregulation of labour markets." - IPES-Food's Olivier De Schutter @DeSchutterO

#investing during volatile times are challenging
You have to invest in cheap and what has relative value and if you can manage Geo political environment, you have a winner in your hand
The last 20 years especially since 2009 was all about growth stocks and not about value buys
The #Fed , the #ECB, and all central banks were slowly destroying the cost of capital and people were being pushed more towards risk assets , these accelerated tremendously in 2020
Growth was nearly a passive investment, all money managers were pushed into the corner of ..
.. investing room , to give an example consider ETF, the more capital that goes into it, it triggers all of the algorithms to say, stock sector is above its 52-day moving average, and by default it will allocate another one percent

Congratulations to my home #Norway on winning a seat at the #UN Security Council. With this seat come many opportunities to influence the global agenda for a better future. But with this also comes increased scrutiny of #Norway's untenable and unsustainable dependence on Oil
As a small open economy with an existential interest in maintaining #globalisation & a "rules based international order", #Norway and it's fellow #Nordics self-interest is strongly aligned with what is good for the world. The same also goes for #Ireland @NorwayUN @irishmissionun
#Ireland's & #Norway's ability 2 influence global agenda on economy & security will depend on them being perceived as benign actors acting in good faith beyond self-interest. #Norway will need to accelerate its move away from #Oil & #Gas #Ireland away from enabling #TaxAvoidance
