🎙 Preacher: Pastor Shalom

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani
that (means), My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

On #GoodFriday I am reminded about Namirembe Cathedral's (St. Paul's) complicated past. Today's Cathedral is the fifth. The 1st was too small; 2nd was ruined by strong winds; 3rd was destroyed by termites, & the 4th was destroyed by fire on 23 Sept. 1910. These rare photos 1/5
were taken on the day of the fire. They show how the roof and infrastructure were utterly destroyed within 1 hour. The current Cathedral was rebuilt during the First World War. 2/5

It's #GoodFriday, commemorating the #crucifixion of #Jesus which, according Christian tradition, took place in 1st ct. AD Judea (then a #Roman province).

While there are historic sources about this punishment method, archaeological evidence is scarce.

Some #EasterArchaeology:
(Content warning: Images of human remains and some possibly rather explicit details of death and torture.)
#Crucifixion as punishment is predating Roman times and goes back as far as to the Phoenicians, Assyrians, and Persians.

In ancient Rome it was mostly imposed on slaves or exercised as political punishment e.g. for insurrectionist - but usually not against Roman citizens.

#GoodFriday is arguably the darkest day in all of human history. The day we killed love incarnate, truth incarnate, and God incarnate because He forced us to confront our own sin. So why do we call it good? Because He chose that death on our behalf, dying the death we deserved.
There is no other way to satisfy the justified wrath of God against us, there is no other qualified atonement for our sin, and there is no other way to ultimately reconcile ourselves to the only living God without the recognition of what happened on #GoodFriday and why.
#GoodFriday is God’s answer to the evil in the world, which we caused. An offer of an undeserving atoning sacrifice that when accepted will begin to make all things new. For God confronts the evil in this world at the molecular level where it starts — in our collective hearts.

I should probably just add that parts of it are quite gruesome.
There is one impression - & an absolutely superb one it is too, though I say so myself

Holy Thursday good wishes to all celebrating Easter:

"Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that His hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved His own in the world and He loved them to the end" (John 13:1) Image
Good morning to all on this #GoodFriday :

"But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5) Image
It is interesting the number of people who find Good Friday hard - the betrayal, the disloyalty, the widowed Virgin Mary watches her son’s brutal, public death, with the women of Jerusalem & only John the youngest apostle who goes to the trial & Calvary (too young to know better)

And they brought Jesus to Golgotha, which means, “the place of the skull.”

And they shot him. 39 times.
The trumped-up charges against him read, “This is a Black man who dared to live in white America.”
With him they murdered two other “terrorists,” dropping their bodies on his right, and his left.

They left him in the street for hours, taking bets on when someone would notice.

“My God is beyond comprehension but my God is not removed from or above this experience. My God feels it too.”

For #GoodFriday I wrote a brief thing on my chronic illness, and why the Incarnation and Crucifixion mean so much to me in that context. patreon.com/posts/49546498
There are a number of reasons why at least for now I refuse to stop trying to braid Christianity and Paganism, and the power of the notion of Incarnation for me is a huge part of it.
It’s one of the things that I believe makes Druidry and Christianity a good fit, in fact—divinity intimately within and a part of the experience of material existence, not removed and hovering somewhere above it.

“Supernatural” just doesn’t have much meaning for me.

(Isaiah 53:1-5) Jesus suffered torture and humiliation for us: Just for us to be saved. By His stripes, we were healed. He carried our pain, sicknesses, and took them to the cross.

Though Jesus bar Abbas was also on trial, Jesus Christ was the one offered for state execution. After being handed over by Pilate, the soldiers would strip him of his clothes, mock, beat, spat and ultimately kill him publicly on Golgatha’s Hill.
(Note: The Gospel of Matthew’s [NSRV] distinction between Jesus bar Abbas (son of the Father) and Jesus Christ (The Anointed) is easy to miss. The title Jesus [Yeshua] was OFTEN given to distinguish revolutionaries, or ‘Saviours,’ during various periods of biblical history.)
For three hours, the world went into complete darkness as he hung on a cross at Calvary in complete agony. He again would “calls on Elijah,” questioning where in the hell God was. Then would take his last breath and die.

Jesus did not ask for any kind of vengeance against the people who killed him on #GoodFriday. I've learned from the families of murder victims that the whole idea of forgiveness is about maintaining our own personal integrity and not allowing ourselves to be overcome with hatred.
There are a lot of deep dynamics here. When Jesus appeared after the Resurrection, his first words were words of peace even though the disciples had abandoned him. Jesus said, "Those who forgive will be forgiven." It's a dynamic of community and active, ongoing forgiveness.
Jesus also said, "Those whose sins you retain will be retained." Sandra Schneiders' insights on the Risen Jesus tell us that the Greek text here was misinterpreted. It wasn't about sin at all and should be translated as, "Those you hold fast will be held fast."

I see a lot of parallels between the #GoodFriday Passion narrative and the lives of people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or Oscar Romero. Jesus knew what might happen if he went into Jerusalem for the Passover feast. Death was part of what was waiting for him.
Dr. King went back to Memphis even though he knew there were serious threats against his life. He wanted to make sure that non-violent direct action was done the right way. Just like Jesus, Dr. King didn't want his death avenged with violence.
Oscar Romero put his life on the line when he urged the military in El Salvador to stop killing their fellow citizens. He knew what might happen as a result of his speaking out. Archbishop Romero acted in solidarity with the poor, urging the people not to return evil with evil.

BE FAITHFUL TO THE CROSS

The Eternal Father has designed the crosses of His adopted children from all eternity, as He designed that of His only Son;hence the importance of schooling ourselves to bear them faithfully.(cont'd)
#TakeUpThyCross #Jesus #GoodFriday2020 #GoodFriday
2/4Because they are but ill formed in the school of crucified love, listening too readily to nature and the senses, which cry out, as the Jews did to our Saviour, to descend from the cross, they seek, later on, some means of escaping from it.

They bear it unwillingly
#GoodFriday
3/4 giving way to interior murmurings which render them unworthy of the favour of heaven, and deprive them of the sweet fruit of this tree of life.

This misfortune is often the result of paying too much attention to our sufferings, and thinking too much of ourselves.

In Christianity, I understand the urge to rush to Sunday - the triumphal resurrection moment. It is a beautiful moment, and it is worth celebrating! But I urge you to not rush past Friday...a Friday that is somewhat strangely referred to as good. Christ didn’t rush past Friday.
As much as He may have desired that the cup of pain, anguish and despair that He was about to endure would pass, He drank that cup in full. If we are called to this same death as His followers, than the unfortunate—yet good—reality is that we must drink it as well.
We must step into the mystery of that pain, that loss, that rejection, and that isolating despair. As much as we all love Sunday (and we should!), I dare say the clearest, most beautiful picture of the character and love of God was painted today—on Good Friday—on the Cross.
