I'm staying in a 5 star resort. It's early evening and I'm sat at an outdoor bar with my girlfriend having a couple of drinks.

It's generally pleasant, but the scene could be better.

And once you see it, you can't unsee it

I can't not notice these kind of details.

It's a hexagonal shaped 'tropical cocktail' bar hut with a central drinks display island.

Over this display, highlighting the bottles of spirits, are some pendant lights. But it's not as good as it could be.

Something's a bit off.
For hospitality, particularly at night, it's absolutely crucial to get this stuff right. Elementary design.

Here's a quick breakdown of the visual experience.

Top 3 things I'd improve asap.

I've spent most of my career in hospitality. Here's why I'm investing there now.
Tried something new, sharing that post as an image.

Here's the thread version - reasons I'm investing in #hospitality now:
#1 - Hospitality is timeless

Despite massive change, the hospitality industry has stood the test of time.

People will always travel.

1. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19?

During this #COVID I am going to create a rolling thread about key issues and articles of interest, just so as you can see the evolution toward a return to normality in 2022, 2023, 2024 or 2025; according to predictions by #Aviation!
2. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19?

Interesting article about #staycations and their price!!

The attitude of some UK h/makers, is I'm afraid, a common feature found in holidays abroad. I've heard many a tale about the Master vs Serf behaviour of some Brits! independent.co.uk/voices/holiday…
3. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19?

It's not done with us yet:

#OffTheBlocks, Vol 129 | Some thoughts on NFTs and the sports and entertainment markets in today's newsletter.
proteum.substack.com/p/nfts-sports-…
The #NFTization of the world of sports and entertainment is a major shift away from the fan experiences that we were all accustomed to pre-Covid seem like an ancient world now.
As a #fan there was not much to choose from previously - they went to the game/event, made a beeline through security, showed their tickets, and went in and savored overpriced beverages and hot dogs.

Today’s personal income and consumer spending data for June reaffirm our view that the reopening continues to drive a powerful #restart — and there’s still room to run. 1/4
In the #services sector, particularly #leisure and #hospitality — which bore the brunt of lockdowns and restrictions — the #spending splurge continues as consumers make up for lost time. But spending is still a little more than 3% below its pre-pandemic level in real terms. 2/4
On top, consumers still have a large war chest of accumulated #savings, a good share of which we expect to be deployed over coming quarters, further strengthening the restart. 3/4 Image

Britain has more job #vacancies than can be filled by the native workforce. That, in a nutshell, is why we need #migrants and millions of them. #Brexit was a con. Watch this 1½-minute video. Read my report on Facebook: bit.ly/3jutvuf LinkedIn: bit.ly/3hjBHLf
It's not just vacancies. Britain has more JOBS than Britons to do them. That's why we need millions of migrants. It really is that simple. Why else would the government offer 3 million Hong Kong citizens the right to come to the UK? Leave voters were misled... big time.
Our country has an ageing population, and a low birth rate. So, the truth is that we have to import young people and skilled (and many unskilled) people to do the jobs that we don’t have enough Britons to fill. The government, of course, knows this only too well.

Our administration has recorded significant progress in making Ekiti the preferred destination to live, work, and play. I am pleased to announce that our state has been selected as the host of the 2021 edition of the National Arts Festival (#NAFEST) to be held later in the year.
Ekiti is beautiful. Our knowledgeable people are #hospitable, we have the most breathtaking scenery, our pounded yam is legendary, and we celebrate our #cultural heritage.
Our #investments in infrastructure and security has attracted an increasing number of players in the #hospitality sector, as well as individuals and organisations who regularly come for holidays, retreats, and conferences.

In @HouseofCommons I spoke up for continued support for restaurants, pubs, hotels, B&Bs, campsites, attractions and other #hospitality businesses that are vital to North West Norfolk’s economy @crowninnrudham @Harpley_RandC and change to rules on selling alcohol with takeaways
Hospitality is at heart of our community as @BankHouseKings #AnvilInn & offers to be vaccines sites show. Grants, rates holiday, furlough were a lifeline. But firms told me they need more help. If would be tragic if benefits of the support were lost as vaccine is rolled out.
I called for the 5% VAT cut and business rates holiday to be extended. People are craving normality of going for a meal, going to the theatre, having a pint in a pub. We want those places to be there and need a plan for re-opening. Until then #StayHomeProtectNHS

FWIW, I’ve been comparing my UK economic forecasts with those of the #OBR. There is a much more positive story than the Chancellor told in Wednesday’s #SpendingReview #SR20 📢

Let’s start with the near-term outlook… (1/8)
The #OBR assumes that the economic impact of #lockdown2 will be ‘three-fifths’ that seen during the first lockdown, when #GDP fell by 25% in March and April. This means that lockdown2 would take the level of #GDP back to 15% below its pre-Covid peak… (2/8)
Given that #GDP was 8.2% lower in September than February, and assuming little change in October, this is consistent with a fall of around 7% m/m in November, which is what’s in the #OBR’s ‘central forecast’. This seems about right to me... (3/8)

Today’s #JobsReport, which witnessed nearly 1.8 million #jobs gained in the month of July, was stronger than many anticipated, yet it also displayed some signs of slowdown in #labor #market improvement.
The report shows that the pace of #job-gain acceleration has now slowed markedly, and it is our best guess that the rapid rate of return to #work will now exhibit a very deliberate pace of rebound from here.
That’s particularly the case for some sectors, such as #retail and #leisure #hospitality, where the slowing in improvement was even more pronounced.

HOSPITALITY - A THREAD 👇

The hardest thing for #hospitality now is to get the balance right.

Yeah, sure, we want people to come out and spend money.

But we want them to do it safely, so we don't end up in a local or regional lockdown - with zero / little Govt support.

1/6
That means your old #marketing messages ("look at these drinks! Come down with all your mates! WOW BUY ONE GET ONE FREE ON SKITTLEBOMBS ALL NIGHT!") might be a little wide of the mark, especially if they encourage risky behaviour.

2/6
Even more pernicious are the 'nudge, nudge, wink, wink, isn't the nanny state stupid lol?' messages.

**The rules aren't there to stop your punters having fun.**

The rules are there to keep them safe, keep you safe, and protect your business in the medium- to long-term.

Dilip Puri of @ISHOfficial makes a pitch for #hospitality sector people (both current and aspirants) to go back to school. The hotel industry has been the alma-mater for the entire luxury service sector. They will come out stronger when the pandemic ends. @ndcnn @businessline
All panelists agree that like any other industry - #hospitality industry will have to undertake major reengineering of the business model. JB Singh of @InterGlobe_IGE makes a case for regulatory reforms. But, like everything other sector it is "complicated" @ndcnn @businessline
#hospitality JB Singh talks of "deconstruction" of the old business model and reconstruct new models with radical shifts in costs and revenue models. He points out - how hotels have responded in the past few weeks. #nirupashankar emphasises the #contactless service and investment

People who like interior design and dinner parties tend to conclude that they must have been blessed with the gift of #hospitality. But this is not the gift of hospitality. This is the gift of a box of chocolates.
Having (or aspiring to have) a nice house with an underused spare room in which to entertain exotic guests who confirm the loveliness of your home has little to do with the deeply disruptive biblical notion of hospitality which starts in the heart (rather than the Ikea catalogue)
The Greek word for #hospitality, φιλοξενία (filoxenia) literally means ‘friendship to strangers’. It‘s about sacrificial kindness to strangers rather than friends. A hospital for the hurting, a hostel for the homeless, a hosting of those who are unwelcome and unloved elsewhere.

Stoked to announce @ZooKeys_Journal published our @BatumiRaptors data paper! It explains how our #citizenscience project monitors the autumn #migration of >1.000.000 #raptors in the Eastern Black Sea Flyway, and how to use our #openaccess data @GBIF/@NLBIF! - 1/n

#ornithology
Many #raptors migrate primarily by thermal #soaring. To do so they travel by day and avoid high mtns and open sea. This leads to spectacular raptor aggregations in overland #flyways. One of the world´s largest raptor flyways occurs along the eastern Black Sea coast in SW Georgia.
The Eastern Black Sea Flyway has its narrowest point just north of #Batumi, where the coast and Lesser Caucasus form a clear "bottleneck". The mtns are not extremely high but present a significant barrier for #raptors on #migration due to low and dense cloud cover. @BatumiRaptors

The answers to the #poll indicates that most of you feel the biggest gamechanger to the #tourism industry in this #Industry40 is the rise of low cost airlines followed closely by travel accommodations #startups like @Airbnb and @agoda.

Well, you aren't wrong there!
Low cost airlines #democratise travel for everyone. As @tonyfernandes puts it in @AirAsia's tagline: "Now Everyone Can Fly".
