FWIW, here are my three takeaways from #JeremyHunt's interview in the Times:

1. Welcome emphasis on encouraging over-50s back to work. This is long overdue, and will need more than just exhortations and gimmicky 'MOT' schemes, but he seems to get this...

2. 'Putting sound money before Tory ideology' is a good line: if badly done, tax cuts could keep #inflation high and add to pressure on interest rates.

But still wrong to rule them out: well-targeted cuts could help with both demand and supply, boosting growth without inflation.
3. Prioritising cuts in business rather than personal taxes is not a bad idea: could do more for supply-side performance, with less risk of inflation.

The distinction between the two is blurred anyway: the burden of corporate taxation is ultimately borne by real people.

Let me tell you my own #jeremyhunt story... We were at a tory fundraiser. I'd written a piece that day about childcare dilemmas. He told me, "move out here to the country. You can get a big house, move in a nanny, maybe her husband too for gardening, driving & stuff...
And you pay them virtually nothing, because you give them lodgings. It's the perfect solution!"
Then we were ushered into the dining hall where my table told me" isn't he wonderful? He'll be pm one day." And I thought, 'God help us!'
He was wrong & also stupid to misjudge me.
I don't normally relay private conversations. But this is too important. We are at a time in history where the big decisions need to be taken by people with the strongest moral compasses.
It's not right v left.
It's right v wrong.
And Hunt is a proper wrong 'un.

New Foreign Secretary @Jeremy_Hunt is in Paris to discuss Brexit & bilateral relations. Can he expect any favours? (mini thread)
1. The good news: France values UK relationship – ally in Middle East, Africa, UN and NATO & partner on intelligence, counter-terrorism. Discussions take place at bilateral level, so largely unaffected by Brexit.
2. The flip-side: France clear that Brexit negotiations are led by the EU. Its position hasn’t changed: UK cannot expect same benefits or preferential treatment. UK-EU trade will inevitably be weaker.
