Kenya-Sudan Creative Collabo
_Aug 2021_

This collaboration came about when Ann McCreath of KikoRomeo had the immense privilege of mentoring designers in Khartoum under the #ModaConnects program. She met the Peter & Black founder *** there. ImageImageImageImage
Sudanese creatives just want to focus on their futures and have an enabling environment to express themselves freely and connect to others globally.
Sudan is filled with immense knowledge and artistry which is little known globally. Our collabo is an informal, impromptu attempt to shine a light on the positivity amongst creatives in Sudan to embrace new worlds. We all pray that this will soon be possible for many more people.

#Kenya's authorities should amend measures requiring everyone seeking government services to be fully vaccinated.

Only about 10% of adults in Kenya are vaccinated.
hrw.org/news/2021/12/1

Over 80% of the world’s vaccines have gone to G20 countries, whereas low-income nations have received just 0.6% of all vaccines.

The #Kenyan government should not make the Kenyan people pay for the vicious, inhuman policies of the EU, UK & other rich governments that have been blocking wider production of vaccines during a global pandemic.

#Somalia’s Finance state minister Mohamud Hayir Ibrahim has accused a #Canadian journalist and a non-governmental organisation of hacking his email and plotting to kill him, amid investigations into illegal fishing in the country’s Indian Ocean coastline. @NationAfrica

Mr Ibrahim has asked the #Kenyan courts to issue orders barring #Canadian journalist Jay Bahadur and the Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime (Giato) from investigating him over illegal fishing along #Somalia’s coastline.
Through Giato, Mr Bahadur last month published an investigative report on the vice, and it pointed to several government officials, including Mr Ibrahim, in aiding illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the Indian Ocean. #Somalia

My third paper for @GI_TOC has gone live today.

It details illegal fishing practices in #Somalia and the capture of state institutions by illicit networks. (thread)

Many thanks to @ian_urbina // @OutlawOcean and @C4ADS for their assistance!

The report presents three case studies to illustrate the intersection between illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing networks and state corruption:
#1 - The environmentally destructive operations of gillnetters of Iranian origin off the #Puntland coast, abetted by a network of local agents and fisheries ministry officials.

This man (photo) is Zakariye, ex-Head of Al-Shabaab Intelligence. He orchestrated many attacks including the Westgate Mall in Nairobi. Now, he works for the Somali Govt & is protected by his cousin @M_Farmaajo. I understand he regularly travels to Nairobi & often visits Westgate.
Few months after the Westgate attack I travelled to Somalia to report from inside Al-Shabaab training camp where the militants were training hundreds of fighters.
Zakariye was praised for 'succeeding the Westgate project'.
I wonder what Westgate victims would think that the man who masterminded such an attack visits the same Shopping Mall to socialise and I am told that he enjoys having a sugared Cappuccino.

A thread re police extra-judicial execution.
Over the years the Kenya Police has acquired a dubious distinction of being the source of insecurity instead of providing security. In many instance, to many Kenyan’s the police represent a clear, and imminent danger to the lives.
But the transformation from the source of security into a bastion of insecurity didn’t occur overnight, and neither did it come as a surprise; it was an inevitable outcome of multiple factors.
Before the 2010 constitution, the police was at the beck and call of the executive, which used it as a tool of coercion. The executive used the police however deemed fit to meet its political ends.

My novel #TailoftheBlueBird has a fictional #Kenyan character called #Gawana who has run away from home to escape #British brutality. He's a vital sub character for me, but I'm often asked by Euro-readers who notice him: how is that possible? Nothing bad happened in Kenya! Well..

Writers hide a whole lot of research, but it's those snippets from history that add ballast to our work. It's why I always say a book is the beginning of a conversation (more on that later) and as readers we can always do more. In fact I think I love being a reader more... #books
