If you care at all about your local library being fully staffed and fully stocked with the books and materials that offer the best, most comprehensive, diverse, and accurate information to serve all needs, DO NOT SLEEP ON YOUR UPCOMING #LIBRARY BOARD ELECTIONS. #libraries
In communities all over the country, municipal elections this April (next week!!!) include races for seats on public library boards and public school boards. There is a well-funded, well organized, aggressive, right wing movement to take over public board seats & kill libraries.
This movement is dedicated to defunding libraries, banning books that feature #LGBTQ content, any #representation of people of color, and books that deliver accurate physical health information to kids in grades 6 to 12 who absolutely need that information.

TRIVIA TUESDAY: The Victory Book Campaign

The Victory Book Campaign (VBC) was a nationwide book drive est. in 1941 by the American Library Association, the American Red Cross, and the United Service Organizations (USO). It provided books to those serving overseas during #WWII Image
The VBCโ€™s first national director was Althea Warren. She took a leave of absence from her job as head librarian of the Los Angeles Public Library to oversee the campaign. Warren contacted librarians across the country to volunteer with her. #WomensHistoryMonth @USArmy @TRADOC
Warren created specialized committees to handle the VBCโ€™s publicity, book collection, and book distribution. She got other organizations to participate in the VBC, including book publishers, universities, the Works Projects Association, and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Image

For 2023, I'm going to spend much more time thinking and acting on the principles of human rights - the more we make them everyday life, the more chance we have of getting them. They are amazing, but hardly anyone even knows what rights they- or others- have. Let's get started๐Ÿ‘‡
"Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind,

Interesting/thought-provoking conversation recently with a retired professional who had spent 30-35 years as national policy lead for several Government departments incl. Home Office & DWP. Short #Thread 1/n
Naturally, our conversation fell to where #libraries stand in the world of policymaking. My first observation was that as soon as you say "library", 2 things happen: 1) people instantly default to *public* libraries and 2) the fog of nostalgia descends. 2/n
It took a good 5 minutes to explain the scope of the library and information sector - people are aware of school libraries and possibly University libraries if they went, but after that it always becomes hazy. That there were LKS in Health came as a surprise to this person. 3/n

Betts points out that the funding of councils is a big element in the success of #parks - as the cost of social care (a statutory service) goes up, there is less ยฃยฃ for green spaces (which are not statutory)...
Betts: 'We didn't think making #parks a statutory service would help - after all, #libraries are a statutory service, but that didn't protect them from closure...' #ParksAndGreenSpacesAPPG
