⭕️ Did you know a journalist is now killed every 5 days?

✏️ That means around 73 people a year lose their lives while fighting to tell important stories.

How did the situation become so dire?

Here are the 5⃣ biggest threats facing reporters globally. 🧵 #WorldPressFreedomDay
1⃣ Surging physical violence

⭕️ Holding power to account is increasingly putting the safety of reporters at risk.

⚖️ Yet 87% of these crimes go unpunished, according to @UNESCO. bit.ly/3EKBr3e
✏️ For war correspondents, the threat of physical harm can be especially dangerous.

#RussianDisinformation at the #UN and #UNSC is not a new development, but #PutinsWar in #Ukraine has brought it into sharp focus. A 🧵 based on my experience leading a team @UKUN_NewYork covering Syria, Ukraine and other issues 1/11
#Disinformation and #Propaganda has been a significant feature of #Kremlin policy since Putin’s controversial ‘re-election’ in 2012. The 🎯 audience is primarily the Russian public but in the #UN context it is also UN member states 2/11
The Putin regime has used #disinformation to justify the 2014 annexation of #Crimea and invasion of #Donbas, to cover up the Russian downing of #MH17, the poisoning of the #Skripals and #Navalny, and #ChemicalWeapons use in #Syria 3/11

🇬🇧 Huge successes and major setbacks after the vote on the #DigitalServicesAct. We won backing for a right to use services anonymously, but there will be mandatory 📱number registration for adult content creators.

Find out who supported and who opposed your digital rights 🧵⬇
Personal information of millions of EU citizens is hacked and leaked again and again, fuelling cybercrime.

We were now able to secure a majority for a right to use and pay for digital services anonymously in the #DigitalServicesAct!
#Breakthrough
Internet corporations use unreliable #uploadfilters against supposedly illegal content - with much collateral damage. The majority won‘t even limit automated censorship to content that is manifestly illegal irrespective of its context.

Help make the EU #DigitalServicesAct a game-changer for our digital rights! Thursday, the Civil Liberties Committee‘s proposals to #FixTheDSA will be voted in the European Parliament.

Reach out to your MEPs!

Every year, data leaks expose millions of EU citizens' data to cyber-criminals.

We plan to enshrine the right to use and pay for services anonymous-ly in the #DigitalServicesAct, to protect citizens privacy, and reduce the impact of data leaks.

#FixTheDSA Image
More and more governments have been abusing their powers to spy on citizens.

The #DigitalServicesAct should ensure your data can only be handed over following a court order to investigate & prosecute serious crime or threats to public security.

1/7. Tweets paraphrasing my open letter to the Chief Justice of India responding to his lament that “the concept of investigative journalism is unfortunately vanishing from the media canvas.” But how and why did that come to be so. Story link at end of thread.

2/7. For about 30 years, I had argued that the Indian media are politically free but imprisoned by profit. Today, they remain imprisoned by profit, but the few independent voices amongst them are increasingly politically imprisoned. Some under the UAPA.

3/7. I do not see the judiciary stepping in to stop this mayhem, whether on governmental corruption, or the mass retrenchment of journalists, the gutting of labour rights, or the misuse of the PM’s title to raise funds free of any kind of transparent audit.

Julian Assange’s detention “sets a dangerous precedent for journalists”, according to politicians from the Council of Europe’s parliamentary arm, who voted on Tuesday to oppose the WikiLeaks founder’s extradition to the US

theguardian.com/media/2020/jan…
Labour peer and UK Rapporteur on #mediafreedom Lord Foulkes, ...had drafted an initial report – Threats to Media Freedom and Journalists’ Security in Europe – that will now contain amendments referring to Assange tabled by a number of European parliamentarians.
One of the amendments backs the recommendation of the UN special rapporteur on torture who called last year for Assange’s release and for extradition to the United States to be blocked.
