Dear #hr in #niin #ksom #usc, I know you are busy, but could you spend 8 mins on my emails pls? I sent 6 emails from April to June, and called you every day this week, but I didn’t get any reply. #neuroscience EAD will be expired at 07/10😩@USC @KeckMedUSC @KECKSchool_USC @USCNIIN ImageImageImageImage
Thanks, friends in #twitter in #niin,#ksom, #usc, in #neuroscience, #neuroimaging, #neuroradiology. I really appreciate your support. I got the email this afternoon. It’s my fault. Even leave, leave with pride, grace, and gratitude, no regret. The 4 yrs will be the best memory in Image
my life, although it is also the hardest 4 yrs. Hope other colleagues could take my lessons, and prepare everything earlier in the future.

Today is my last Friday before I become #faculty 🤯 and I wanted to take a second to reflect a little on my #postdoc experience. Spoiler alert: yes I grew a lot and met amazing people but no, postdocing wasn’t fun and I wouldn’t want to do that again. #PostdocLife 1/n
First the good - I learned and grew a lot during my postdoc and thanks to that, my career has shifted in exciting new directions. It also taught me not to be scared to try something new! Remember: PhD grads are really good at learning new stuff. #PostdocLife 2/n
What I learned cost me a lot though… being a #postdoc is by definition full of uncertainty and pressure: you don’t know where you’ll be living in 1-2yrs, funding insecurity for some, pressure to do great so you can land your next job, etc… #PostdocLife 3/n

Positive #transformations are always great to see as an end product. The journey to a transformation however is almost always hidden. On the first day of #phd #gradschool in @umasschemengg, I introduced myself by saying....contd.

@AcademicChatter
....I came to the US for the ‘#science’ and ‘#fitness’ industry that is known to be the best in the world. Everyone got a good laugh 😂 out of it. However, I wasn’t kidding at all 😈! I always had this vision of a scientist 👨🏾‍🔬who is also ripped to the core physically 💪🏾.
In that pursuit, I reached my best physique towards the end of year 2 of my #PhD when I also got #married 👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏽 to @priyankaitkar9. I was still not quite there with the #science. Today, 4 years later, I am successfully @PhDone2020 and getting close to the best shape of my life!

OMG! I had an awesome #MedEd breakthrough this week.

SOOOO PUMPED!

And guess what? Consider this #spacedlearning because it all loops back to my Monday meeting with one of my #mentors @dan_p_hunt_MD.

Wanna hear about it? You do? Good! 😁 Image

Okay, so one of the agenda items was about my struggles with clinical teaching during #COVID19.

Specifically:

When I can’t bedside round or have the students or whole team go in due to a patient being a #PUI or #COVID19+, it’s limiting my teachable moments.

Waaah.😢

Dan suggested I try this:

1. Bring my mini-whiteboard
2. Assign a question to the students while I go into isolation room with resident or intern.
3. Leave them with the board/marker and allow them to rapid fire search on whatever devices or computers.

Cool right?

To all the new #graduate students starting their #PhD or the ones already in it. It's true that the #journey of a PhD is like #life packed into a few years. You must also understand that it is not your entire life either! Life goes on despite how this journey goes or ends! Thread
I made this #infographic to represent my journey in #gradschool at @UMassChemEng @UMassAmherst. When you're in the thick of things, It will be hard to see the light at the end. Everyone around you will keep telling you that but most of the times it will seem #impossible!
Year 3, 4, and 5, I went through multiple cycles of #depression. I cannot put a finger on anything specific of why that happened. What I realized though, is that every time I came out of that cycle, I found enormous amounts of hidden #energy and #strength.

I've reached the stage in my career where I'm receiving invitations to speak about #EDI #Indigenization #Decolonization from the same institutions that also declined to interview me for TT positions... umm, let's unpack/unwind this with a meandering🧵
I need to be clear, as a white/white-coded Métis and Cree scientist, I experience relatively little marginalization, certainly non-comparable to other BIPOC scholars (perhaps more for my gay and two-spirit identities, especially when younger)
I recognize the privilege/advantage being white and male has afforded my education (that's a whole thread on its own) -- But I also see how my work with #EDI and esp. #Decolonization and #Indigenization of botany/science is simultaneously desired yet undervalued for advancement

Read about our @NatureEcoEvo comment on how to prepare a growing #postdoc workforce in the @nationalpostdoc #POSTDOCket! The nb of postdocs has doubled in 30 years, but faculty positions nearly not changed. We propose 5 key points to better prepare us for a wide range of careers:
1.Align career development with job markets: a survey found that #STEM PhDs lack skills essential for the current #career landscape. #Postdocs need to be encouraged by advisors & departments to invest time in professional development.
#phdchat #beyondprof

journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…
2. Sustain wellness & work-life balance: a happy worker is a productive worker! No #postdoc should lack access to healthcare, sick leave or parental leave, we need more transparency about benefits & recognition of #mentalhealth consequences of short term contracts & relocation.

I'm proud to be asked to become a #Mentor in Polish #Azure community #mentorship program.

You can apply here (firs selection stage): mentoring.azurecommunity.pl - it is targeted on Polish audience but I can do it in English as well.

Think about your goal before you will apply! Image
Personally for me it is a way to give back for all the help I was given when I started my career and along the way.

Interview season has begun.

Will you be interviewing for a tenure-track job at an academic medical center?

Or do you have a #mentee that soon will?

If so, here are 10 suggestions for giving the ‘job talk,’ a usual reqt for tenure-track positions

#JobTalk
#MedEd
#Mentoring
1/ Find out in advance about the audience & tailor accordingly. A talk to a small research-focused audience (scientific seminar) will be different than a noon conference to housestaff or a Grand Rounds presentation to entire Dept. Best to find this out several weeks beforehand.
Suggestion #2/ Avoid putting in fancy animations or videos as they (the videos, especially) are fraught due to technical difficulties.

A thread about how #startups and #founder approaches to the startup phase profoundly impact their ultimate success and whether #coaches or #mentors help or hinder👇👇👇
Like ageing philosophers, new #founders often seek coaches and mentors because they want certainty.

Yet uncertainty is often the best friend of a #startup and tapping successful yet 'old ways' of (say) marketing, holds you back from discovering your own success metrics...
In seeking certainty, #entrepreneurs are looking for tried & trusted formulas so therefore they don't build the muscle to test & experiment their way to success.

As a coach I sometimes hear this as 'can't you just tell me!'

Which translates as; 'I just want the silver bullet'

A quick #thread on the importance of #mentorship and critical #feedback in writing. I’m targeting students, trainees, and younger faculty who struggle with the #mentoring process- I’ll share some vulnerability to demonstrate a #growthmindset- I’ll also recommend 2 books.

A couple of weeks ago I was invited by @AnnalsATS to write an editorial for a paper. I loved the topic so I quickly agreed and started ordering my thoughts. It was a quick turnaround- 2 weeks, so I had to get moving.
2/
I worked diligently on the draft and invited @vitaincerta to co-author- she is smart as a whip and a terrific writer and I knew she would really help to shape a well-written piece. She agreed and I sent her my #ShittyFirstDraft.
