The history of this bill is almost as egregious as the policy this bill espouses.

Pushed through #MoLeg at the last minute with no discussion, the bill puts the desires of parents and the interests of abusers above those of kids. This will create more traumatized children. šŸ§µ
FIRST, the procedure.

There were quite a few family law bills filed and debated this session. Most of them were pushed by a group called Americans for Equal Shared Parenting.

(I'm going to do nested threads here, so this will start the legislative procedure discussion.)
SECOND, the policy and consequences.

Of all the family law bills filed and discussed, this is the only bill that passed. And this bill makes things worse for kids, not better. I'm going to do nested threads here, so this will start the policy discussion.)

For more than 100 years, Missouri voters from across the political spectrum have used ballot initiatives to enact the will of the majority ā€“ from protecting the Right to Farm and constitutional limits on state taxation & spending, to healthcare and ethics reforms. #HJR43 #moleg
Missouriā€™s initiative process is a sacred constitutional right and an important part of our democracy; it gives voters the freedom to have a say on the laws that govern us and serve as a check and balance on the state legislature. #HJR43 #moleg
No matter our color, background, or zip code, in Missouri, we value our freedom ā€” the freedom to have a say on important issues. Together we have exercised that freedom by voting for ballot measures to increase wages, expand healthcare access, and more.

I applaud Montana Democrats for objecting so strongly to the refusal to let their member speak. Rep Zephyr was treated in a way that is not just unjust, but is an assault on democracy.

But as a Missouri Democrat I have questions ā€¦ #MoLeg šŸ§µ
State legislatures are as different as the states themselves. Scrolling through the thread above, I am making guesses as to the Missouri equivalent to Montana procedure. But I'm going to talk about Missouri in the rest of this thread.
The practice of not recognizing members who have asked to speak was used before my time in #MOLeg, and still occurs. I am not a rules expert, it never occurred to me that this could be a violation of rules.

Yo, @LastWeekTonight fam!

Sooooo, you probably heard about our state senator who spoke out in support of child brides last Tuesday.

The part of the story you're not hearing is that not one @MissouriGOP elected official has publically denounced it.

It's been a week.

Missouri's a majority-GOP government.

They hold:
- 24 of 34 state Senate seats
- 111 of 163 state House seats
- all six statewide offices
- 6 of 8 U.S. House seats
- both U.S. Senate seats

They've had 149 chances to say "Hey, please don't marry kids."...aaaaand passed.

Instead, this week:
- The Speaker Pro Tem talked shit on a rabbi with a trans child
- The Governor complained about "negative press coverage"
- A legislator who CONSTANTLY denounces "wokeness" on Twitter tweeted he "didn't have time to denounce every little thing folks say"

šŸ§µSpoiler alert:

It is scripted. Every red state gets the same bills placed in their laps. It then gets a sponsor with an ā€œRā€ next to their name. From there, it moves through the legislature w/o a single ā€œayeā€ vote even understanding what they just voted for. #MoLeg

Listening to #moleg debate legislation that can hand control over policing in St. Louis to GOP politicians. Instead of heated rhetoric on alleged "demonization" of police officers, lawmakers should be working to address our state's weak safety laws that hamstring police. #SAPA

Of the 3 anti-trans bills, Missourians on public record testifying against these bills outnumbered the support by hundreds:
