They said it was impossible. After decades of #antitrust cases over #PredatoryPricing - selling below cost to kill or prevent competitors - the #ChicagoSchool of neoliberal #economists "proved" predatory pricing didn't exist, so courts could stop busting companies for it.

Predatory pricing - the economists explained - was illegal, but it was also imaginary. A mirage. No one would predatory price, because it was "irrational." Even if someone irrational enough to try it, they would fail. Stand down, American judges - predatory pricing is solved.

Hi @matthewstoller & @ddayen I pay a lot of attention to both of you, and I was hoping to point you at what's going on with Intuit and QuickBooks - software that's at the heart of a lot of small businesses, including mine.

#QuickBooks #Intuit #monopoly #greed #terrible
QuickBooks is a lot of products, but the ones most people know are QuickBooks Online (QBO), a monthly subscription for their accounting web application, and QuickBooks Pro for Windows (QBW), a Windows desktop application.
Intuit brings out a new QBW every year. Until 2022, QBW could be bought in two ways: a license for a specific year's version, say QBW 2019, for about $300, or as a subscription (QB Pro *Plus*) for about $350 a year that included version upgrades, support, and online backup.

American electricity customers are likely overpaying #monopoly electric utilities by $2 to $20 billion per year, says a white paper from UC Berkeley's Energy Institute at HAAS: google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j… Image
Regulators charged with protecting the public interest have systematically failed to align the actual risk and reward of utility capital investments, allowing utilities to earn too much money on very low risk investments. Result: "a sizeable transfer from consumers to investors"
Here's a few highlights: "it is noteworthy that over recent years, utilities have earned sizeable regulated rates of return on their capital assets, particularly when set against the unprecedented low interest rate environment post-2008"

Christmas's apocalyptic airline meltdown stranded thousands, ruining vacations and costing fliers a fortune. It wasn't just #SouthwestAirlines' meltdown - as stranded fliers sought alternatives, airlines like #AA raised the price of some domestic coach tickets over $10K. 1/ A vector drawing of a man slumped at a desk with his face on

This didn't come out of nowhere. Southwest's growth strategy has seen the airlines add more planes and routes without a comparable investment in back-end systems, including crew scheduling systems. 3/

#ZeroToOne by is a must-read for anyone looking to build a successful business. Here are ten key takeaways from the book:

The concept of "#monopoly" - It's not about being the biggest player in the market, it's about creating a new market and being the only player in it.
The power of "definite #optimism" - Instead of shooting for incremental improvements, aim for a 10x increase in value. #peterthiel
The importance of "#secrets" - The most valuable businesses are built on secrets that are hidden from the #competition.

The original sin of tech boosters and critics is an undue focus on what a technology *does*, rather than who it does it *to* and who it does it *for*. Firstly, this story should not go unnoticed. Let's do what needs to be done. Let's make @Google @GooglePlay know what WE as artists think about this absurdity and obvious corporate thievery. Let's not sit on the sidelines.

@Bandcamp is an amazing space and provides the independent artist with a plethora of ideas and tools to make their creative voices heard in this tough 'music business'. Google is literally a sham of a business. They offer 'free' products to entice us but use this model for ads.
And now @Google and @GooglePlay have decided to dive into the artists' pockets and take revenue from their Bandcamp sales. Ten F@$#! percent. While this is in court, we have to not let this stand. For once, really, we have to start to assert our power as people.

A month ago I wrote this 🧵 on why #import duties were not the answer to #Pakistan's Balance of Payments constraints. #ImportBans are certainly not the answer either. Rather, they exacerbate the underlying problem. Five thoughts. 🧵👇

1\ The usual: CAD results from a macro imbalance (Saving too low relative to investment, so foreign saving needed (borrowing) (CAD is the mirror image of borrowing from the rest of the world (financial account of BOP)). Fixing the CAD takes increasing saving (cool off demand).
2\ The #importban in #Pakistan reduces #imports (does it? see point 3\ below), but not the CAD, because it also reduces #exports.

For years, as I have discussed the value prop for seizure-resistant, non-sovereign💲like #BTC with noobies, I have always had to caveat it with "we don't think about it in the Western world too much bc our money, banking system, and law typically work well"

Well...
2/ #Bitcoin's value in the Western world has NEVER been more obvious thanks to the last ~ 2 years.

Reminder, it has ALWAYS been valuable to those less fortunate living under authoritarianism or double-digit inflation (over half the world)

I have been looking for a way into #Top20ColorSongs beyond just naming some songs with colours in that I like. There's no simple way of ordering colours with a start and end and I don't fancy delving into RGB values etc
But when I read @dreamfuel's snooker inspired twist an idea began forming. The @MonopolyUK board has 22 coloured squares, plus 4 stations and 2 utilities (which I will count as white as per their property cards).
So I will grab a pair of virtual dice shortly and see what colours the streets of London fancy throwing up.

I shall play as the ship as always, I will roll again if I land on the chests, parking, jail etc as I don't have access to an actual board. Playing standard UK version.

Police claim “unlawful assembly” after killing 20 year old young black man, with his mom on the phone and his girlfriend beside him as they drove to visit his older brother and see his new home. Here is the PDF from the @aclu_mn re: protests. #BlackLivesMatter
Minneapolis police knew, or should have known, the killing of a young black man stopped in his vehicle, will result in protests. The police should have been prepared for protests and de-escalated it. Journalists have been reporting that police officers are quitting the “force”
because of fear of danger after the George Floyd trial outcome. Therefore, they knew of the repercussions of killing, wrongfully, a young black man. #EnoughIsEnough #StopSystemicRacism
