Sandro Tonali Thread🧵Part two:

#NUFC
Yet, as previously mentioned, the 23-year-old can also play as a roaming no 8, so let’s take a look at what he’s like in the attack.
In terms of player development, Tonali has gradually become more statistically involved in the attack over the last two years since joining Milan, accumulating 16 goal involvements in his last two seasons.

So much noise about the relationship between PIF and Clearlake in light of multiple Chelsea moves to Saudi. Of course scrutiny and transparency is always needed... Image
But remember, #CFC really wanted to keep Kante and lost him on a free. And they have sold Koulibaly and Ziyech for pretty modest fees and at a loss. Mendy turned down a new deal last year so was always likely to leave.
Perhaps the optics paint a conflict of interest or at least provoke important questions, and that’s right and fair. The connections can’t be ignored. But Chelsea have really just hit the outgoings jackpot here.

🧵It seems many overlook some of the problems and conflict of interest when football clubs transform into state-owned prestige projects, possibly due to their emotional attachment to the sport and specific clubs. Here, I provide three clear examples: #ManCity, #PSG & #NUFC. 1/5

THREAD🧵: Yankuba Minteh - Newcastle United’s New Youngster 🇬🇲

The 18 year-old Gambian has become #NUFC’s first incoming of the 23/24 season, having signed for around €7m. Why have the club chosen Minteh, and why is the Feyenoord loan move such a good one for him? Image
Minteh was signed by Odense Boldklub on a 2-year contract last summer after two trials with the club. He was signed for the U19 side, but within the space of two games for them, the coaching staff felt he was already first-team ready.
After scoring the winner against eventual champions FC Copehagen on debut, he went to to become a regular for OB, playing 17 times this season, and starting in 15 of them.

He racked up an impressive 4 goals and 6 assists across these league games.

THREAD🧵: Newcastle United's 2023/24 Summer Transfer Window 🔎

With transfer season well and truly kicking off, and with #NUFC set to make some important moves, I thought I'd have a closer look at what we need, and who could be most suitable. Image
Having secured Champions League football in the first full season of the new ownership, there’s no doubt that this summer will be one where the hierarchy looks to push #NUFC into a position where that becomes a regularity.
In order to do this, we still need to operate as efficiently as we have so far.

It means finding value in the market - picking up players who not only have quality, but players who can fit seamlessly into Howe’s brand of football, and at prices that don’t see us get ripped off.

Next level multi-club-ownership by #NUFC owners - the State of Saudi Arabia.
Expect state-owned Saudi Aramco, Diriyah Gate Development Authority, Royal Commission for AlUla and NEOM to become club owners as well.

THREAD🧵: Newcastle United 2022/23: A Season in Review ⏪

This campaign has been an incredible journey, and not many people thought it would end the way it has for #NUFC. Let’s relive it. Image
The summer was one of real optimism following the way we finished the 21/22 season. Especially with a full pre-season under Eddie Howe, and with the squad surely being strengthened, there was a feeling that this Newcastle United side could really start to push on. Image
The transfer window started quickly with the signings of Targett, Pope and Botman, before a quiet period which culminated in the marquee signing of Swedish forward Alexander Isak for £63m. ImageImageImageImage

#BHAFC's Julio Enciso spoke to @TigoSportsPY today in his first interview after the end of the Premier League about his time in English football, Roberto De Zerbi & many other things related to Brighton & Paraguay as a whole 🇵🇾

I'll be translating some of the bits from that ⬇️ Image
"I arrived at the club as an unknown and I wasn't getting the opportunity to play, I'm young & I was going crazy but all I wanted to do was play. I was worried because I was playing a lot at Libertad but wasn't playing at #BHAFC, but Alexis (Mac Allister) told me to be patient." Image
"My parents are here with me & I had a lot of conversations with them because, at one point, I wanted to give up which hurt my parents a lot. I thought I was going to be an important player but my teammates made me understand that it's all going to be achieved little by little." Image

Newcastle United Fans Against Sportswashing - Statement on Qualification for Champions League
------------------------------------------------------
“All the perfumes and money of Arabia will not sweeten this deal or wipe away their crimes."
🧵👇🏽 Image
The fog of cognitive dissonance gets ever thicker on the Tyne. Newcastle United have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. Chairman of the club, Yasir Al-Rumayyan appeared in a penalty shootout at halftime with the minority owners. Image
So much for the 'binding assurances' to the Premier League that the Saudi Public Investment fund (PIF) is separate from the Saudi state. Al-Rumayyan is a sitting Saudi minister and place-man of the Saudi regime’s chief dictator, Mohamed bin Salman. Image

A month or so ago, @JohanJnrRidley requested a list of the players I think #NUFC should sign to improve the squad this summer.

Now European football of some kind is all but guaranteed for #NUFC, I’m in a position to deliver this.

So here’s my 40+ tweet transfer mega 🧵 👇 Image
However, I want this thread to be sensible and bring in as many realistic factors as it’s possible to know I’m going to break this down into three sections:

1️⃣ Potential Outgoings & Squad
2️⃣ Recruitment Strategy
3️⃣ Transfer Targets

#NUFC
1️⃣ Potential Outgoings & Squad

Let’s start with players that are 𝙇𝙞𝙠𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚 #NUFC via loan, transfer or end of contract this summer:

▶️ Hendrick
▶️ Fraser
▶️ Dummett
▶️ Dubravka
▶️ Ritchie
▶️ Lewis
▶️ Manquillo
▶️ Clark
▶️ Hayden
▶️ Darlow

Following his side's 2-0 defeat at St. James Park, Erik Ten Hag said: “Newcastle played above their levels”

With #NUFC now in 3rd in the table, in this🧵 @edit_kev puts the Manchester United manager's words to the test & takes a look at how #NUFC are shaping for the run-in 👇
So, to do this effectively, we’re going to split this analysis into three sections:

1️⃣ A summary of #NUFC’s season to date
2️⃣ The last 10 games
3️⃣ Player usage

Let’s dive in 👇
1️⃣ The season to date

So far, #NUFC’s 🔴 success has primarily been built on defence, which exceeds the league av. 🔵 per-90 for:

◾Shots conceded (10.19)
◾Expected goals conceded (0.89 xGC)
◾Passes allowed per defensive action (8.64 PPDA)
◾Actual goals conceded (0.70)

As these quotes from an article in the Athletic make clear, #NUFC chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is very much part of the Saudi regime.

“He works for a guy,” (MbS) “He has a lot of money and can do certain things he wants. But he’s a courtier.”

theathletic.com/4343985/2023/0…
"The joy on Al-Rumayyan’s face was evident. This was a new kingdom, one outside the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he serves as right-hand man to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, one of the world’s most powerful and controversial rulers."
“He is the technocrat given the responsibility of putting Bin Salman’s vision into practice,” says one Saudi-based expert, speaking anonymously for his own security. “But remember, if he doesn’t deliver, Bin Salman is not going to blame himself.”

#NUFC & @England player @trippier2 has made a welcome call for solidarity with #Ukraine ahead of the match at @wembleystadium

Kieran, along with many other football players obviously think it’s important to speak up on social issues & they can make a difference:

🧵👇 ImageImage
So, why have no #NUFC players, past or present spoken out about the many victims of the 80% #NUFC owners?

If @trippier2 can show solidarity with the Ukrainian people, than why not with the Saudi people?

If he did he would make a massive difference & perhaps even save lives.

I was asked on @SkySportsNews why bidders not willing to match the Glazers' asking price of £6bn. This is one way how we crunch the numbers, the discounted cash flow model (DCF). First of all look at this historic performance of the club #MUFC ImageImage
Then use those figures to work out historic relationships between income, costs, funding etc. Use those to create some working assumptions...and mine are fairly optimistic, 15% income growth pa and no major CAPEX investment for at least 5 years Image
On the basis of the assumptions project future growth of income, costs and perhaps most importantly cash. ImageImageImage

Amnesty International say the Premier League must "re-examine the assurances" given about Saudi state control of Newcastle. It's after #NUFC chair Yasir Al-Rumayyan was described as "a sitting minister of the government" with "sovereign immunity" in a US court case. Image
Statements came via lawyers representing LIV Golf (owned by PIF). San Francisco court approved PGA Tour's request to include Al-Rumayyan as a defendant in lawsuit against LIV. PIF say Al-Rumayyan is "not [an] ordinary third party subject to basic discovery relevance standards".
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has said in the past if evidence of state involvement in the running of Newcastle "we can remove the consortium".

Despite #NUFC’s loss to #MUFC #Karius showed that he is more than capable of playing at the top level!

Our model at #GKxG found his shot stopping was worth 0.22 goals more to #Newcastle than if they had an average #PremierLeague GK in goal

Full article👇 goalkeeper.com/news-and-media… Image
#Karius made 8 saves vs #MUFC, but GKing is about quality not quantity!

5 of the saves had xSave>99% thus #PremierLeague GKs save them every time!

The 2 interesting & difficult saves were the 1v1 vs #Bruno & #Weghorst’s long range shot! Which beat #PL GKs 41% & 29% of the time! Image
It was these saves whose difficulty outweighed the 2 goals #Karius conceded meaning #Karius saved an above expected amount of shots in the #LeagueCupFinal

#Karius could do nothing with the #Casemiro goal (xSave probability<5%) but the #Rashford goal was a little more interesting Image

THREAD🧵: Loris Karius - A Chance for Redemption 🇩🇪

Yes, I’m making a thread on a player in preparation for what might be the only game he plays for us.

Karius has had an interesting story, and he's now likely to play an integral part for #NUFC on a day of huge importance. Image
Loris Karius is essentially remembered for one game, and one game only. His entire footballing career is unfairly defined by one performance as a 24 year-old, and his career has never really recovered from it.
The first error in that final was just a complete one-off moment, and the second one was a routine bit of handling which went wrong. It happens - especially considering that he was concussed at the time too.

The recent @Reprieve report on the death penalty in Saudi Arabia lays out in stark detail many reasons why #EddieHowe #NUFC players #NUFCFans should be speaking out on the issue before the #CarabaoCupFinal

THREAD
The rate of executions in Saudi Arabia has almost doubled since King Salman and his son Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) came to power in 2015, a new report reveals. They have presided over more than 1,000 executions.
Reprieve and the European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights (ESOHR) studied execution data from 2010 onwards, verifying official announcements with open-source investigation and casework, plus interviews with lawyers, activists and family members where possible.
