#Denounce, #deny, #deceive - 6 common tactics of media manipulators and why they work to sabotage public discourse

It is time to stop being naive about online discourse.

“The discourse holds so many traps for the unwary. It’s a bit like financial scams and gambling that are a tax on the financially naïve. A similar tax is being levied on the intellectually naïve.” —  @ArthurCDent

@ArthurCDent In the article, I lay out 6 common #manipulation tactics and why they work to sabotage discourse on scientific topics.

First up is "just asking questions" or "#sealioning", which uses social expectations and #framing effects to distort conversations.

Breaking news.

#Outrage is the most profitable emotion: pundits, columnists, politicians & advertisers are trying to make us angry.

It's partly why society is so polarized: to get attention (& ad-revenue, audiences, followers etc), say something controversial!

Trump turned it into an artform.
Sparking outrage seems counter-intuitive when trying to sell or promote a product or an idea, but as Oscar Wilde said, the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.

84% of advertising isn't noticed - outrage gets people talking, or at least noticing.
Outrage sells newspapers & gains listeners. @Conservatives use it all the time.

It's partly why billionaires invest in people/organisations who say outrageous things, & it's why #GBNews will be deliberately provocative: it's 'good for business'.

But it's an energy-sapping trap!

Both #GBNews & #NewsUK are about to launch Fox News style channels in the UK.

Despite Mr Neil saying 'wait & see', it's obvious to a child that both channels will try to drag public opinion EVEN FURTHER Right.

What to do?

#DontFundGBNews

As Fox News ratings began to plummet after Trump's defeat, with their audiences seeking even further right-wing channels, & with profit as the one true religion at Fox, something had to change, so according to a number of reports, Murdoch stepped in to call the shots directly.
Most notably, the network decided to add an hour of opinion programming to its prime-time offerings.

The 7 pm hour will no longer be nominally 'news', but straight-up #outrage production.

Why? Because that’s where the ratings (& ad revenue) are!

🚨New preprint! 🚨 In 2 observational social media studies (12.7 mil tweets) + 2 behavioral experiments (N=240) we examine how reinforcement and norm learning amplify moral #outrage expression on Twitter w/ @mollycrockett @killianmcl1 @tuanars123 (🧵👇) | psyarxiv.com/gf7t5/
We proposed that two design features of social media platforms interact with social learning mechanisms to impact outrage expression. First, we argued that streamlined social feedback delivery (e.g., salient + quantifiable likes/shares) leverages reinforcement learning 2/n Image
At the same time, on the platforms users are organized in large networks where local norms of expression are highly salient b/c they are displayed in users’ news feeds. This design is very likely to tap into people’s tendency to learn from observation, i.e., norm learning 3/n Image

2017 Review: “Expert guidelines recommend reducing or discontinuing long-term #opioid therapy when risks outweigh benefits, but evidence on the effect of dose reduction on patient outcomes has not been systematically reviewed.” / #cpp thread.
🟠 How can guidelines be "expert" recommendations if researchers haven't carefully investigated how patients will react when their rx #opiod med is stopped or reduced?

Are we going to feel better or worse? Are we going to live or die?
In 2017, #VA-funded researchers identified 67 studies about #opioid dosage reduction or discontinuation.

Study quality was deemed “poor” in 76% of the 67, the lowest rating.

Why do some people get upset and resort to death threats when comedians crack jokes about certain subjects?

A lazy opinion #thread.
Comedy is about finding humor in places where it's least expected.

A joke is basically a twisted form of tricking your brain into thinking about something, letting it process the information and come to a conclusion about how ridiculous the whole thing is.
When someone cracks a joke, there is a lead up to the punchline which lays out the scenario. The storyteller ensures the audience is glued to it till the last moment.

Then, there is a well timed punchline.

The person is caught off guard, forced to THINK and then LAUGH.

i'm gonna do a thread replying to this because of how surreptitious i found this article, but it really deserves a rebuttal in my own happy unvetted medium article where i share cherrypicked screenshots of reylos calling finn abusive for grabbing rey's hand one time

I've been in fandom for 15 years (😰), and I started in male-heavy anime fandoms, back in those days where there wasn't such thing as antis and slurs were uncriticized common tongue. I love unpopular ships. I've never experienced this. Maybe I haven't been a big enough jackass?

X : Have you seen #factcheckUK ?
Me : I'm aware of accusations that the Conservative party changed the display name of its social media account to this. Such actions go far beyond propaganda and into disinformation and deception. It questions the values of organisation ...
i.e. it would not be a simple case of spinning news anymore or being economical with the truth. Such an action crosses a line into deliberate deception. No political party should ever cross that line, it's more what you would expect from organised crime.
Unfortunately, it doesn't stop there. The real threat is whether such actions were taken deliberately to cause #outrage. In which case, we're now talking about psychological manipulation and these are crafts of war, not suited to political discourse ...

X : What's happening in UK?
Me : Nothing.
X : Protests?
Me : A bunch of people complaining about the influx of pigeons ... "stop the coo" etc?
X : Political protests?
Me : A bunch of people helping Dominic's play?
X : Are you going to be sensible?
Me : No, I'd hate to be alone.
X : Aren't you outraged?
Me : That's the point. You're supposed to get outraged. Then you look like the outraged. What's needed is not outrage but firm, solid action i.e. support Labour's proposal.
X : That's not going to happen.
Me : Then get used to a new Withdrawal Agreement.
X : Why a new Withdrawal agreement?
Me : What do you think is the point to prorogue Parliament? A new session, a drip feed of new "voter friendly" announcements and a new, ever so slightly modified WA?
X : Parliament won't vote for it.
Me : After going on protests about no deal?

We're outraged (OUTRAGED, I TELL YOU!) at the sheer degree of ineptitude shown by clone bot @OneOutragedDude at expressing outrage. #YouHadOneJob #OUTRAGE

cc: @ZellaQuixote
How does @OneOutragedDude manage to express an UTTERLY MEDIOCRE degree of outrage 24/7? This account uses automation service IFTTT to post all of its tweets (none of its content as of the time of this writing was tweeted via non-automated means.)
In what may be a failed attempt to convey outrage, @OneOutragedDude clones an odd lineup of accounts. Trump's Twitter account is the most frequent source of content; both of Bernie Sanders' accounts, various UK political and media accounts, AOC, and Elon Musk are frequent fliers.

Some of what we’re labeling #outrage culture is cynicism but some it is the discomfort of having to seriously hear the voices of groups we’ve always been able to comfortably ignore.

Discomfort isn’t always a bad thing, y’all.
Many of us have only known homogeneous culture where we’ve worked, played, & lived.

Social networking has completely shattered that.
If we’re honest certain groups have never needed to take head to marginalized given their ability to insulate themselves via neighborhoods, schools, & economics, that’s no longer possible if you plan on frequenting social networks.

UPA: Cool. Like a citizenship ID?

NN: Nope. Just an ID. No rights will be granted... But eventually... all citizen rights will be dependent on it! Get it?

UPA:
Activists: Um I think you need to create a law. This is kinda big. YUGE project. YUGE

UPA: Let there be an ID which will be created by a random attached office in the planning commission!

Activist: Wait. What?

UPA: Oh hey, Planning Comm is doing a lot of PLANNING for this, OK?

The Trump admin has crossed a huge line. They are forbidding the @CDCgov from using the words "science-based" & "evidence-based."

Guess what? Science IS evidence-based, and the CDC shouldn't be making recommendations based on "wishes." #outrage #science
washingtonpost.com/amphtml/nation…
Also ridiculous: banning "transgender," "fetus," "diversity," etc. Anyone will tell you that banning something doesn't negate its existence.

In fact, I am now committed to using all of these words more.
Here we go: Vulnerable populations with high degrees of diversity such as transgender persons will suffer due to the Trump administration's retrograde views on diversity, entitlement, & science-based, evidence-based policies in favor of fetus rights.
