1/ In 2008, @US_FDA phased out #albuterol inhalers w/ ozone-depleting CFCs, including several generics.

Since then, brand-name firms have reaped $14 billion in sales on albuterol products--though the active ingredient went off #patent in 1989!

By the mid-1990s, inexpensive generics had become available.
3/ However, many early inhalers contained chlorofluorcarbons (CFCs).

Brand-name firms, in turn, developed more environmentally friendly #HFA and dry-powder (#DPI) #albuterol inhalers.

By their own estimates, they spent $250-400 million developing these products.

Patents & the patent process are rarely discussed in #biomechanics & #engineering fields of academia (at least in my experience). But they should be.

At @CREATEatVandy we held a roundtable discussion on patents/IP, fueled by great questions from students, postdocs & staff.

I encourage other researchers to organize a similar event. Intellectual property (IP) is an important topic, but a common blindspot for university graduates (BS, MS, PhD), which leads to misperceptions & missed opportunities for translating science & tech into societal impact.
2/
How we did it: Prof. Michael Goldfarb (wearable tech pioneer) & I led a 90-minute discussion. We provided a brief overview of #patents, but mostly we just addressed/discussed questions from trainees & staff. You could also bring in university tech transfer office if helpful.

First, a bit of history. As you may remember, we've been here before. Broad & UC had a previous interference that focused on CRISPR-Cas9 *eukaryotic* claims back in 2016/2017, affirmed by the CAFC in 2018. /2
In *that* interference, the PTAB declared there was no interference-in-fact between the parties' sets of claims. UC consequently went back to the PTO and, in a surprising decision, got some of its general (i.e., pro- and eukaryotic) system claims granted. /2
