Let's remove barriers so that #PharmacyTechnicians in the UK can be trained to vaccinate, and support attainment of community immunity

Now's the time to produce a training programme & PSDs to support the delivery of this year's flu prevention plan

#vaccines #InfectionPrevention
We need to adopt QI methodology to address this #publichealth concern

The drivers are clear - this is about ⬆️ #patientsafety via #prevention

It should not be about inter-professional competition; there is enough work for everyone
It's important to #vaccinate as many people as possible to protect those who're vulnerable

Although UK flu activity levels were not high last year, impact on 2°care was high due to hospitlisation & ICU admissions

This year looks set to ⬆️ so let's be innovative w/ healthcare WF

I listen to ~90 #Podcasts on a (semi) regular basis. Let me give you a rundown of ALL of them and why you should listen to some amazing #FOAMed, especially for all the new #EmergencyMedicine interns. #FOAMed #MedEd #medtwitter
First of all, you need a good podcast app. I absolutely love Downcast. Great app, gives you more control over playback, downloading, and allows you to categorize your podcasts into playlists (picture 2). This is where you get to customize your #FOAMed experience! #medtwitter
In no particular order,

- Anesthesia and Critical Care Reviews and Commentary (ACCRAC). Great insight into Crit Care from an anesthesia perspective. Coming from EM, this is great to listen to- much different from my day-to-day! #FOAMed #FOAMcc #CriticalCare

A brief #tweetorial for those curious as to why I spend countless hours on a non-specialty medical organization. The basic premise of the @AmerMedicalAssn House of Delegates is actually simple. #healthpolicy #publichealth #MembersMoveMedicine 1/
It’s a representative democratic body consisting of members of societies from the US states and subspecialties of medicine, convening twice a year as the @AmerMedicalAssn House of Delegates (HoD). The majority of each meeting is spent deliberating policy proposals. #AMAmtg 2/
Any member or organization can bring resolutions with various policy goals to the HoD to be debated and voted on. These go through a multistep vetting process where everyone has the opportunity to speak on and amend these policies under the rules of parliamentary procedure. 3/

1/5 This week, my #SundaySpotlight on #PublicHealth science shines light on a new @JAMA_current study on #marijuana use during pregnancy. bit.ly/2L6P7vx
2/5 While researchers caution about potential confounders, their data very much suggest that #cannabis use during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of preterm birth.
3/5 The findings are particularly concerning since an accompanying study from @NIDAnews & @samhsagov finds that a growing number of U.S. moms-to-be are using #marijuana. bit.ly/2RsP6D6

Something I’ve thought of posting for awhile:

My personal manifesto on vaccines in the context of measles outbreaks and as an Epi PhD student with a small child under the age of 1.

A thread.

Grab some popcorn and settle in.

#Parenthood #StudentParent #EpiTwitter
A bit of background: We have family and many friends who live on #VashonIsland (known for having low rates of immunization).

My undergraduate thesis looked at school rates of vaccines on Vashon and found no #herdimmunity for ANY vaccine preventable disease in 2012.
Vashon is an evil genius’ dream for an outbreak.

There are 2 grocery stores, where everyone shops.

The schools share facilities, have student mentor exchanges, etc.

There are regular student trips to the 1 senior center.

Did I mention it’s an island?

It's dry tinder.

A thread about infant readmissions to hospital in the UK. Prompted by a recent paper in @bmcseries #bmcpediatrics. I’ll talk thru the data & some wider issues that are the focus of debate in #infantfeeding - 1/n

bmcpediatr.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
Why is this important? Well, there is a lot of discussion going on, mainly in mass media and social media, about possible relationships between #infantfeeding policy & practice and sufficiency of #breastfeeding in the early days/weeks of life 2/n
My personal interest in this area: while having my own kids, I trained & volunteered to provide #breastfeeding support locally and continue to follow the research and evolving discussions 3/n

I've been hearing a lot of resignation in people's voices and tweets, in the face of the latest tragedy at #PowaySynagogueShooting. People are giving up hope that we can ever bend the curve on our #gunviolence epidemic.

--This thread is dedicated to destroying that despair.—
6 years ago, we watched those babies walk out of #SandyHook - & were torn apart, as a nation, by the memory of those who didn't make it.

Many of us had been told that we "couldn't" talk about guns.

But after Sandy Hook, many of us said "no more; we will not be silent."
A few bravely started talking and writing about why #gunviolence was a #publichealth issue. Those few, turned into a wave. The groundwork was slowly laid.

My first peer reviewed article was published today! I'm grateful for the chance to write about my Master's thesis and share some of my thinking about #climatechange and #narrativedissonance . Please get in touch if you're interested in chatting more. canada.ca/en/public-heal…
My qualitative study looked at the #stories of young people who already know about and care about #climatechange. I wanted to know: how are they making sense of climate change in their everyday lives? How are they responding, and is that #engagement meaningful to them?
I used Marshall Ganz's framework for public narrative to map out the barriers to engagement across participant stories. Essentially, I was looking for clues as to where #climatenarratives break down, or become meaningless, even for those convinced and caring. #climatechange

I guess I better speak out on my own thread. @GRamsey_LatAm is gushing over how PAHO/WHO are "intervening" in the disastrous Venezuelan health situation.

Dude: I have been watching #measles and #malaria case numbers here in South America for the past few years.

1/5.
The deterioration of the health situation in South America is glaringly evident.

A couple of years ago, I watched #malaria case numbers climb over 240,000 in Venezuela, after having been much lower than that for years, and almost eradicated in the 1950s and 1960s.

2/5
Soon thereafter, I personally witnessed the #migration out of #Venezuela , which had once been the most prosperous South American nation.

I saw some people so thin they could have been in the horrors of WW2.

Low vaccination rates are a #publichealth crisis, leading to outbreaks of deadly diseases like #measles. My new research in Vaccine/@ElsevierNews provides insight into the characteristics of people who post #antivax content on #Facebook: dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.vacc…
First, I want to credit my fantastic co-authors: @MTH_Pitt @emfelter @DrToddWo @ChadTRM @PittPubHealth. This research stemmed from thousands of #antivax comments on a video on the @kidspluspgh Facebook page: facebook.com/watch/?v=10159…
We used social network, quantitative, and qualitative analyses to examine 25% of people who left these comments. Our goal was to answer questions about who these people are, the information they post, and how they are connected.

I'd like to offer an alternative perspective on the world of Anna and Elsa in @Disney's "Frozen:"

Elsa was a leper, and a traumatic brain injury suffered as a child led Anna to experience a fanciful world divorced from reality.

A #PublicHealth thread: (Ping @Surgeon_General)
Arendelle is beautiful, +almost certainly represents Norway in the mid-1800s. Opposite to the rest of Northern Europe, leprosy was prevalent-indeed, rampant-in Norway well into the mid-19th Century. In 1816, Norwegian leprosariums were called "graveyards for the living."
Confined to her room all day, covered from head-to-toe with long robes and forbidden to touch anything without wearing her gloves, it's no stretch to imagine that young Princess Elsa was stricken at a young age with this disease that raged across the Norwegian countryside.

Now reading the the #TopolReview report - Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future. It's an illuminating read topol.hee.nhs.uk #DigitalHealth
It's clear that a lot of effort has gone into the #TopolReview - it paints a glorious vision of what healthcare would look like over the next 20 years (for both staff and patients) - enabled by technology such as #genomics, #AI and #robotics
For me the #Topolreview has too narrow a focus. It's been commissioned by healthcare, yet we know that with an aging population, many people with long term conditions have to rely upon #socialcare as well. We need joined up thinking, imho.

My thread on WHY @narendramodi ji's @AyushmanNHA (आयुष्मान भारत-प्रधान मंत्री जन आरोग्य योजना) is MY personal reason for #ModiOnceMore
Y'all know that @AyushmanNHA provides Family Floating Coverage of ₹5 Lakhs per family and that its the world's largest #PublicHealth Insurance scheme . What then is the USP of this scheme? Here are a few:
1. It subsumes two earlier schemes, Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, and Senior citizen health Insurance Scheme, along with a few others.
Benefit: CLARITY in END-POINT DELIVERY! No more confusion as to whether you're eligible.

80% of people accused of a crime in the US are too poor to afford a lawyer

(obviously this doesn’t map to actual crime being committed - rich people unlikely to be policed)...
So poor people are overwhelmingly who ends up in prison/jail in the U.S.

Prison populations have much higher incidences of 1) mental illness 2) substance use disorder 3) survival of serious trauma, than does the “general population”...
Mental illness, substance use disorder & healing survivors of violence (& other trauma) are all #PublicHealth issues. If a person is fortunate they most likely get medical help in the free world. If a person is poor, that is much less likely...

This #ManufactureOfDoubt script has been used by the #formulaindustry from the very beginning. You can see it from 19th century advertisements through today. The script is a #social one, exactly as @prof_goldberg says - and where #culturalideologies & #politicaleconomy intersect.
Perfect for some #anthropological analysis. In case of #formulamarketing, the social script for #ManufactureofDoubt exploits & enhances existing #culturalideologies of anxiety abt #breastfeeding which have been around since late 19th cent among white, upper class women & spread
#Biomedicalization of #childbirth & #infantfeeding played a key part in deepening these anxieties & facilitated the #normalization of #infantformula by mid 20th cent, esp via medical experts & hospital practices that entailed routine separation & scheduled feeding
