My family is transitioning from lower class to lower middle. Like most #Punjabi families, with marriages & the third generation being born, the home language is shifting to Urdu (between siblings, spouses, parents and kids, kids and kids)#sociolinguitics #linguistics #punjabiyat
Even the second generation (=my) siblings speak Urdu or switch b/W Urdu and Punjabi while speaking.
I, however, am an exception who insists on speaking Punjabi for topics that are considered too modern for Punjabi, e.g. technology and business.

Grandparents (mum and dad) to grand kids (my nephews and nieces) communicate in Urdu, only I keep Punjabi on (my niece says 'Shakir mamoo Punjabi boltay hain' Shakir (maternal) uncle speaks Punjabi. And then she laughs sometimes).
My Dad had an operation today. As he was being wheeled into the OT, he got the attendant to stop his stretcher so that he could give my brother in law an important message.
His message - "Fridge mein Chicken rakha hai. Bana lena, nahi toh kharab ho jayega!"

OK, so I can finally share this here since his COVID-19 test report has come negative.
He was having fever and cough after getting discharged some days ago and we decided to get him tested for COVID.

Shiromani Akali Dal will strongly take up the issue of restoration of Punjabi as an official language in J&K with PM Sh. @narendramodi & Home Minister Sh. @AmitShah besides raising the issue in parliament.
We'll seek a change in the draft legislation seeking to make Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi & English official languages of J&K by seeking inclusion of #Punjabi language in this list.
There is a widespread resentment amongst Sikhs and Punjabis worldwide at the discriminatory manner in which Punjabi has been excluded as an official language of J&K by its administration.
