Welcome to my TED Talk on the far-right in Ireland. THREAD –
A lot of people on the far right in Ireland seem to be having difficulty understanding why we call them “far-right” so here’s a little explainer for those at the back
If you use "Antifa" (short for anti-fascist) as an insult, you're far-right

🧵Last night, hundreds braved the wind and rain in Parliament Square as the House voted on the #IllegalMigrationBill to make their thoughts on this hateful legislation clear: 1/
The impromptu #StopTheBill demonstration heard from former refugees and campaigners like @haoussou, who called on the Government to reject the Home Secretary’s nativist Bill and show solidarity with people across the world affected by conflict 2/
.@Ntunasi reminded the crowd that the Government’s harping about ‘illegal asylum seekers’ grossly oversimplifies the reality of finding your way to a safe destination as a refugee 3/

Good morning everyone 🌸🌞🌸
And still, it rattles on.
I #StandWithGaryLineker, it's important for everyone to question this barbaric asylum seekers policy,
People stepping forward and supporting freedom of speech is what we should all be doing, cancelling someone's right to
Speak out is fascism, isn't it?
The @BBCNews @BBC @BBCSport
Can't sit on the fence in chosen subjects and then get involved in others.
Its time for solidarity, it's time for us all to stand up and be counted this is our country we have to set our boundaries of what is
Acceptable, the "Nasty Party" have shown again and again not only their distane for asylum seekers but for their own citizens.we can not rely on the MSM or the government to give us the truth we have to go and look for it ourselves, time to put your big pants on, time to stand

When I was growing up, and learned in horror about the Holocaust, I thought 'Never Again' meant:

"Never again can such evil ever be allowed to happen against anyone. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it".

Yet to some absolule unspeakables, it means:
"Never again must anyone ever be allowed to call out racism, fascism, evil, note with horror where it has led in the past and where it will do so again if it isn't stopped, and cite their knowledge of Nazi Germany...

... Because doing so is SHAMEFUL and ANTISEMITIC".
1930s Germany teaches us all what can happen when a minority (in fact, several minorities) are stigmatised, demonised, utterly dehumanised.

At that very time, extraordinary proportions of the British press thought it was "exaggerated".

@GaryLineker Here's a chart showing Asylum applications per 100,000 of national population. We do indeed take in far fewer than the majority of our European neighbours. In the next tweet I'm retweeting an article with the latest statistics that back up this chart. 1/2
@GaryLineker And here's the article, published in the iPaper giving the latest figures... 2/2
@GaryLineker As Ian points out, our numbers are relatively low compared with other similarly sized European countries. #RefugeesWelcome #HopeNotHate

“If they really are refugees, why don’t they have to stay in the first safe country they reach?”

“Why don’t they just claim asylum in France?”

Here is my answer, once & for all. To Jonathan Gullis, and to everyone else who ever wondered.
#RefugeesWelcome
The 3 things you need to know:

1. Most refugees never come to rich countries like the UK, more go to other countries.

2. Those coming to the UK have ties to this country.

3. Geography is no excuse to shirk responsibility & leads to a race to the bottom with disastrous results.
For those asking how he responded, I don't remember any response at all.
The full video is available here.
I & a witness from Border Force answered questions on why the government's plans would not solve the problems in our asylum system... & they haven't.

1/ The body of a little girl was found on an island in the Kerkennah archipelago,Tunisia, last December, in the same position as little Aylan Kurdi in 2015. But unlike him, his photo did not not made the rounds of the world nor engendered the slightest political reaction. Image

Let me get this straight- people are saying the far right are rioting because of refugees so we should listen and stop letting refugees in? But when just stop oil/XR protest to stop climate change its ‘extreme’ and nobody wants to put things in place to stop climate change?
The far right are setting things on fire and people are saying ‘well let’s just give them what they want it’s clear they are annoyed about the refugees so let’s solve that problem for them’
But when people sit on the ground at parliament square asking for abortion rights or action for climate change or because the police are racist it’s ‘woah that’s not real, you should calm down, so woke and extreme’

Merseyside Pensioners, Trade Unionists, Anti-fascist and faith groups gather outside the Suites Hotel in Knowsley as a show of support and solidarity for the #Refugees temporarily housed there. The peaceful gathering was in response to threats from far right and fascist groups.
Contrary to some media reports those supporting the refugees DID NOT clash with the police or cause any disturbance. #Merseyside has a proud record of welcoming those fleeing from oppression. Fascists are not welcome. #RefugeesWelcome
Fascists have been trying to intimidate the #Refugees & stir up hatred. Our determination to welcome these vulnerable people will continue despite the hostile environment created by the government. #RefugeesWelcome #ToriesUnfitToGovern #Racism is not welcome! @UnitedWeStandSN

Re: @chrisgreybrexit's thread about his heroic father-in-law: in September 1939, my Hungarian great-grandfather was in London. Seeking asylum for his Jewish family.

When war broke out, his wife pleaded with him to return to her and their three daughters. Fatefully, he did.
That decision ultimately cost him his life. He died in the camps only weeks from the end of the war. My grandmother, who doted on him, never forgave her mother for that heartbreaking request.
When they were deported to Auschwitz in 1944, my grandmother, great-grandmother and two great-aunts somehow stayed together.

Everyone has the right to seek, in another country, asylum from persecution in their own. There’s no requirement that this be in the nearest country or any particular country. This comes from Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 1/5
It is not permitted to penalise someone, still less punish them, simply for exercising that right by crossing one or more borders without prior permission. This comes from Article 31 of the Refugee Convention. 2/5
It is especially absurd to complain at this while pretending to take pride in providing or having provided asylum to some people & yet make no provision at all for anyone to be given permission to come to seek asylum. In fact, it’s plain disingenuous. 3/5

How many times does it have to be said before the government pays attention? "Deterrents" don't work. If you want to cut channel crossings it needs to be done by making it easier to reach the UK and access the asylum system. 1/

Removing carrier liability fines would be a great start, these are what airlines, ferries, Eurostar etc may have to pay if they are found to have facilitated the transportation of someone without correct visas. 2/
Fairly obviously refugees don't often get the chance to apply for a visa and then wait around for it to be issued when fleeing for their lives, so being prevented from reaching the UK via more "normal" routes forces them into having to rely on smugglers. 3/

Thinking on #PolicingAct & chilling effect on democratic right to protest. Here’s a 🧵 of some MFJ demos/marches only from past 2yrs - we never asked ‘permission’, we never informed police. Now we could be prosecuted. This one is recently at Colnbrook detention centre (1/20)
Here we marched from brixton to Home Office via Serco & G4S offices -- it was a powerful, vibrant, important march led by asylum seekers, refugees & undocumented many who came to UK on promise of freedom, democracy/equality. #PolicingAct makes mockery of those principles (2/20)
Here outside the Rwandan High Commission protesting inhuman Refugee Trafficking deal. This was after passage of #PolicingAct . How many people will think twice before organising such a protest because of this Act? We can’t let them make us afraid, we must keep fighting! (3/20)

THREAD: As it is #WorldRefugeeDay and the start of #RefugeeWeek2022 let's have a little look at some of the common misconceptions, and plain lies, spread about asylum seekers coming to the UK shall we? 1/
Let's start, appropriately, with the common myth of "first safe country". Now this gets said a lot, but in reality there is no mention of first safe country in any internationally recognised legal instrument related to refugees. 2/
The closest reference you will find is in the Dublin Regs, which the UK has now left, and even then effectively first country of entry is at the bottom of a hierarchical list of criteria for determining which state should process the application. 3/

What is so complicated about having a processing centre in Calais as offered by France? That way the vast majority of refugees whose applications for asylum are approved could arrive in the UK ready and willing to find work and become huge benefit to the country.
In many cases they have family links here. Built in support systems. The insanity of the Rwanda idea is that it is designed to stop traffickers. By punishing the victims who would be deported without being heard, even though the majority would be granted asylum? The refugees?
How is that in any way acceptable? Where are their human rights? The UK has lost its moral compass. Atrocious thinking. It has to stop. #RefugeesWelcome #NotInMyName #Shameful #ToryDisgrace #JohnsonOutBeforeHeDoesMoreDamage #compassion
