#RomanSiteSaturday - The Temple of Bacchus🏛️🍷

(1/6) Located in Baalbek, #Lebanon, the Temple of #Bacchus is an amazing example of Imperial Roman architecture, adorned with Corinthian columns and lavishly decorated ceilings and parapets.

(2/6) Likely constructed under emperor Antoninus Pius (138 - 161CE), the temple is a massive 66m long, 35m wide and 31m tall, which is larger than the Parthenon in Athens! 8 columns wide and 15 columns deep, it features a walled cult room split between two floors and a crypt.
(3/6) Despite its namesake, it is unknown as to which deity it was dedicated. Archaeological evidence from the site however suggests #Bacchus, as the interior design depicts a god of wine and ecstasy and other Bacchic symbolism like Maenads and revellers.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The Temple of Garni 🏛️

(1/7) The Temple Garni is situated in the village of Garni in #Armenia, and stands as the only Greco-Roman temple in the nation. It sits on a cliff edge by the Azat River and the Gegham mountains.

(2/7) Constructed in the 1st century CE, it was most likely built under the Armenian king Tiridates I as a temple of Mihr, the Armenian sun god. Supported and crowned as king by the Roman Emperor Nero, it is thought Tiridates adopted Mihr as his patron deity and protector.
(3/7) Stylistically, the temple is a blend of Ancient Greek architecture and local Armenian influences. Decorated with Ionic columns, it is constructed with local grey basalt and without mortar, instead being held together with iron clamps. It also features floral friezes.

If you were an average #Roman, you would have had only basic facilities to cook in your apartment - so most Romans lived on takeaways. You may have popped along to your local Popina (Wine Bar) which usually had a limited menu of simple foods like olives, bread and stew. Image
Popina's did not have the best of reputations and were often associated with illegal and immoral behaviour. As well as food and drink, sex was often also on offer and also gambling, even though gambling with dice was illegal Image
For a more substantial takeaway menu, #Romans could go to a thermopolium (cook shop) - it offered a more varied fast food menu served at a counter - just like this one, the Thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus from Pompeii. Image

In all the territories of their Empire, #Romans built cities that always share common features and monuments: one of the most recognizable was the #Amphitheatre
Let's start our trip to the Romans amphitheatres from the Capital. The Flavian Amphitheatre, alias the #Colosseum (72-80 AD), is still the most iconic monument of #Rome. It could hold 50-80.000 people, assisting a variety of public spectacles, even sea battle! #MuseumsUnlocked
Also the already mentioned #Aquileia used to have its own amphitheatre, built in the I cent AD. Preserved only in remains, it was identified in the XIX cent. by E. Maionica and is currently under investigation by @UniVerona: looking forward for new discoveries! #MuseumsUnlocked
