Why we need to talk about policing of ALL Black folks, not just men:

The #SayHerName hashtag (by @sandylocks) was a call for attention to Black women murdered by police i.e. #MaKhiaBryant and how our expectation that this issue only affects Black men misses the full picture.
The African American Policy Forum released a report entitled Say Her Name: Resisting Police Brutality Against Black Women in 2015 to highlight this overlooked issue. Later that same year, #SandraBland died while incarcerated and still ruled a suicide.

static1.squarespace.com/static/53f20d9ā€¦
.@washingtonpost has been tracking police killings since 2015 and found by 9/2020, 247 women had been killed by police, 48 (19.4%) were Black women. What names do you hear most often or see in a hashtag? Killings of Black women receive less attention.

This is what it's like to be BLACK in America. "I don't even feel safe. Send me back to Afghanistan or Iraq," says a soldier amid the racism, mistreatment and killing of Blacks in 2020.
28 year old #SandraBland was found hanged in a jail cell in Waller County, Texas, on July 13, 2015, three days after being arrested during a traffic stop by #BrianEncinia. Her death was ruled a suicide.
Robert Fuller was found with a rope around his neck and hanging from a tree in Poncitlan Square in Palmdale, California. lamag.com/citythinkblog/ā€¦

Been digging deeper into Texas' 2019 #SandraBland data and Houston is a big outlier.

Of agencies reporting to @TCOLE under Texas' racial profiling statute, @houstonpolice account for 3% of traffic stops statewide and 29% of all use-of-force incidents reported at those stops.
HPD reported the highest use-of-force rate among large TX agencies at 71 incidents per 10K stops. Statewide avg around 8 force incidents per 10K stops. (N.b., this only captures force at traffic stops, not all UoF incidents.)

Source (columns J and HK): tcole.texas.gov/content/racialā€¦
Together, Houston and DPS accounted for about half of reported force incidents at traffic stops statewide in 2019 (3,739 out of 7,866). But DPS performed 8x as many stops. If HPD used force at same rate as @TXDPS (5.2/10K), they'd have had >2,000 fewer force incidents last year.

I look forward to working alongside @GFColeman and Senator Whitmire to add very necessary reforms to the #SandraBlandAct next legislative session. These provisions, which would have held police accountable, were removed from the original bill. (Thread)

texastribune.org/2020/06/09/texā€¦
ā€œAfter Whitmire removed much of the language related to police encounters... the bill passed both chambers. The version of the Sandra Bland Act signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott had become mostly a mental health and jail reform bill, and it lost support from Blandā€™s family.ā€
Now is the time to revisit this Act, & honor #SandraBlandā€™s life by adding these measures to hold police accountable:
- implicit bias & racial profiling training
- banning choke holds
- increasing stop & search standards
- limiting arrests for Class C misdemeanors

FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY #SandraBland was found hanged in a Waller County jail cell in #TX10.

Say her name and continue to fight for justice! #BlackLivesMatter

A THREAD:
(šŸ“· = HBO) Image
At 28, #SandraBland was one of 5 sisters from IL, a graduate of the HBCU @PVAMU where she played trombone, worked as a summer counselor, & volunteered for a senior citizens advocacy.

Throughout 2015, she was passionately outspoken on social media condemning police brutality.
On July 10th, 2015, #SandraBland was driving to @PVAMU to begin a summer program associate job when she was pulled over & brutally arrested for *failure to signal*. Like #GeorgeFloyd, Bland experienced a crushing knee to the neck.

1/ Five years ago today, #SandraBland was found dead in a rural Texas jail cell. Legislation sparked by the outrage over her death was mostly stripped of racial profiling and police reform measures before the #txlege passed it.

Hereā€™s where things stand.
2/ Bland, a 28-year-old Black woman, was found dead in an apparent suicide at the Waller County Jail three days after she was arrested during a routine traffic stop.
3/ Dashboard camera footage disproved the state trooperā€™s stated reason for arresting her ā€” assault on a public servant ā€” and showed him threatening to drag her out of her car and use a Taser on her after she refused to put out a cigarette.

I'm tellin' you man, black folks, black Muslims, Arabs, Desis, Mexicans, etc., are out in the streets dancing to a tune so loud, they don't even know what key it's in. Because of this, many are unwilling and unable to acknowledge the main reason why
the death of #GeorgeFloyd has gone global, has gone viral, is because Chuck authorized it to go viral. The liberal wing of Chuck has authorized outrage over the death of a black man even though we've been dying at the hands of white cops and black hoodlums for decades!
The question I have is why did not white liberals authorize riots and protests when they killed #CliffordGlover, #ClaudeReese, #RandyEvans, #YvonneSmallwood, #AmadouDiallo, #SeanBell, #OscarGrant, #TrayvonMartin, #JordanDavis, #JonathanFerrell, #AiyanaJones,

On May 25, #GeorgeFloyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was murdered by Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer. Chauvin kneeled on Floydā€™s neck for seven minutes, suffocating him as Floyd pleaded repeatedly that he couldnā€™t breathe. Justice has not yet been achieved.
We have a national crisis of white supremacist violence against Black people in the USA. In the past decade alone, we witnessed the deaths of thousands of Black people at the hands of police. #BreonnaTaylor #EricGarner #SandraBland #TamirRice are just some of those weā€™ve lost.
At Indivisible, we believe Black Lives Matter without qualifications, asterisks, or add-ons. We also believe in the right for communities to protest and protect themselves against state-sanctioned violence. Period.

I have written my first book. "Bearing Witness While Black: African Americans, Smartphones and the New Protest #Journalism," is on sale now: bit.ly/bearingwitnessā€¦.
This book is for #GeorgeFloyd. #AhmaudArbery. #PhilandoCastile. #EricGarner. #SandraBland. #TamirRice. And all of the black men, women and children who have been killed by excessive police force or vigilante violence.
This book has been a decade in the making. In the 2010s, I taught brilliant students @MorganStateU and @BowieState how to make news using only smartphones. I never imagined that by 2014, when Ferguson rose up, that Black people would use these devices for survival.
