A #thread about promoting scientific literature in graduate students, while having fun, and generating results. I hope this is helpful for some, and feel free to Retweet. #WSUEntomology #sciencetwitter #scicomm #scichat #phdlife #phdchat #GradSchool #readingcommunity #science
Many faculty are often frustrated that students seem to have a poor understanding of the literature, or are surprised when students don’t know the “big names" in their field. However, one must realize it is easy to get “pigeon-holed” while you are focusing on your MS/PhD
Reading groups are one way to address this issue – meet weekly or bi-weekly and read literature in a given field. However, too often reading groups are dominated by faculty/postdocs with more experience and students are afraid to speak up for fear of ridicule or embarrassment.

In response to @AOC’s #idiotic assertion that #US operated #detention facilities are #concentrationcamps, @Liz_Wheller posted a comment that @PPFA abortion businesses are the #concentration #camps we have to worry about.

@EricBrown1982 takes exception to my assertion that #science defines the offspring of #human #parents as #human and/or my assertion that #science confirms that the #blastocyst, the #embryo, and the #fetus are all #living #beings.

Anyone tired of hearing parasite comparisons from #prochoice'rs?
Read this thread for an effective rebuttal on how to refute this assertion with science and logic.
#ProLife #Science
2/
Let's first understand the logic being applied by the pro choicers.
Their argument is that "because it is growing inside the pregnant person, it is therefore parasite."
3/
Citing one textbook titled, General Parasitology, by Thomas Cheng, it is clear that parasites, by definition, require heterospecific relationships. That means they have to be different species.

SUbject - Appeasement, Madrasa, Khilafat

1- The Madrasa system is like a sleeping dragon which is actually gradually sinking into an ocean. It is in the best interest of our nation, as well as humanity, to avoid awakening it.
2- What I mean to say is that the #Madrasa system in India, especially in the last 20-30 years, has been on a steady decline. While several other countries have been shutting them down #forcefully or through #legislature (due to activities of spreading radicalism).
3- and whereas in India, all our past Govts chose not to disturb the #Madrasa system so that it can #die down #naturally. In fact, several Muzlim families have been moving away from the Madrasa system, and switching to the #normal schooling system for their kids.

Happy Monday! Here is the second thread on Twitter for science organizations. Today we will discuss tweets - how to craft them, how to use hashtags, mentions and quote tweets @PrinSciAdvGoI

For our first thread in this series click here -
The one thing to take away from this thread is this - All tweets are public interactions. Not only are they interactions with the public, but tweets are also public information. A social media rep speaks on behalf of the organisation. Keep personal opinions for personal accounts
Write full sentences but be as brief as possible. Only use commonly known abbreviations - if necessary, expand them. Do not use too much scientific jargon - remember you are reaching out to the general public, not a group of scientists.

[Do #Science #Panels work?]

One of my least favorite formats of communicating research w/in #Academia & yet it's everywhere & continues to be the default to pack as many big names as possible onto a stage.

Have you seen it go well? And seriously, why do we keep doing it?
One of the biggest culprits of when #Science #SciComm #Academic panels not working tends to be poor moderation.

My intro to dialogue facilitation/panel moderation came from a journalism prof who emphasized the importance of doing your homework on the panelists & the audience.
As a #science #academic panel moderator, you:

- keep the flow of conversation going
- balance voices & time, being mindful of power imbalances
- be a proxy for your audience

It really doesn't go well when moderators just take over the conversation instead of FACILITATING it.

[Day4: Strengths & Limits of #SciComm forms, media, & spaces]
It's theory vs practice day!

There are loads of resources out there for #BestPractices. Today, let's discuss the strengths & limitations YOU've found in trying #STEM #storytelling, #comedy, #SciArt, #digital, & more!
I'll start w/ my favorite resources: @edbeltane & @OliverEscobar's "Public Dialogue & Delibration" & #WendyFaulkner's "Dialogue in #PublicEngagement" handbooks.

How do participant #communication styles impede/help your purpose, eg. #dialogue vs #debate?
beltanenetwork.org/DialogueTheory…
These have been crucial in my understanding of #experiencedesign when creating events or experiences for diverse #scicomm audiences & participants.

There's a purpose for panels and debates. But also a reason why they fail in "changing minds" or creating power-balanced convos.

[Day3: Creating & Sustaining Spaces of Practice]
Q: Have you created or been part of initiatives for #Science #STEM #STEAM #SciComm practice? Are you considering creating one yourself?

Today we'll discuss "safe spaces to fail" and scaffolded experiences to build up your skills!
Why do I care?
As a former academic & now in my work to spread adaptable skills in #scicomm through #comedy, it strikes me how little prep we get to teach or give strategic talks as we make the shift from undergrad to grad levels

How many bad habits do we accumulate b/c of this?
What are some bad communication habits in #Science #STEM you've seen, experienced, or are still working to overcome?

Here's where I used to struggle:
- preparing talks the night before
- going over time
- imagining the audience wasn't even there
- bad PPTs
- STAGE FRIGHT

🚀Countdown to Launch 🚀

July 16, 1969, three astronauts departed on a mission that would captivate the world. In celebration of #Apollo50, we're counting down to the launch of #Apollo11 by sharing an artifact each day that tells the story of our journey from Earth to the Moon.
The artifacts we will be highlighting — big and small, critical and amusing, familiar and never-before-seen — are expanded on in the new book "Apollo to the Moon: A History in 50 Objects" by National Air and Space Museum curator Teasel Muir-Harmony. #Apollo50
Yesterday marked 50 days to #Apollo11 launch, so let's start at the beginning of the Space Race: the failed launch of the Vanguard TV-3 satellite in December 1957, a response to the Soviet Union's Sputnik success two months earlier: s.si.edu/2iYQ0e9 #Apollo50

[Day2: Failing Better Together]
Q: What does "failure" mean to you?

For me, my #sciencefails & #SciComm fails fuel my teaching & community-building values:
- Creating spaces to fail better
- Building communities to exchange learnings
- Scaffolded experiences to reframe failure KyleMarian on a microphone with her back to the camera. She's facing the audience and hosting a storytelling show.
#Failure is an important part of #Science & #Comedy, but it wasn't until I got into comedy where I started understanding the impact of being transparent & celebrating failures.

It also got me thinking: does #Academia have an integrated process & outlet for dealing w/ failure?
Do you incorporate #journaling or #reflections into your #SciComm practice?
If you work in teams, do you have regularly-scheduled de-briefs?
As professionals, are you given allotted times in your paid schedule to reflect on project learnings?

Whether it’s vaccines or fads such as celery juice to treat chronic inflammation (spoiler - it doesn’t)...social media is filled with opinions of people who have done their own ‘research’.

This thread discusses some problems with that statement ⬇️ #TuesdayThoughts
Many people use the word ‘research’ but I do not think it means what you think it means.

Research begins w a question, followed by a thorough & careful view of ALL evidence to support or refute.

Many mistakenly begin with a suspected conclusion, then work backwards.
Proper research requires:
1. Time to search ALL relevant references
2. Understanding of what constitutes evidence AND how strength of evidence varies
3. Understanding of all the biases that influence research...within ourselves AND the authors/publication source

[Day1: Strategic SciComm Through Play]
Often times, when talking #SciComm #SciOut #PubEng #SciEng #SciEdu #SciArt, we spend a lot of discussions on the idea of play + joy + fun for target audiences.

As a practitioner, do use "play" to get better in your practice? If not, why?
Do opportunities & spaces to "PLAY" with your craft/skills in communicating #science even exist for you?

For academics, the lack of opportunity to learn+practice+play w/ public speaking significantly impacts careers, like favoritism of "charismatic ppl" to bad teaching habits.
In the #Arts + #SciArt, rehearsals + practice time is crucial in honing your craft.
In #MuseumEd & #projectdevelopment, there are stages for prototyping, focus grouping, beta-testing to "play".

In #Academia, prof dev workshops exist, but do you have a space for practice?
