From stop & frisk to mass Incarceration as a driver of health disparities. Can’t talk about health inequities w/o discussing criminal justice system (&racism) #SGIM19 1/x
US incarceration rates exceed 20 developed democracies. Incarceration rates not related to violent crimes. 1/3 black men will be incarcerated lifetime (racism, not race). Incarceration traumatizes individuals, families, communities
Many newly dx w chronic diseases but access limited. In CT, those incarcerated pay $3 copay for (constitutionally guaranteed) healthcare = 4 days of work
Anti racism in action: name racism (it’s not race it’s racism) & interrogate mechanism. Racism creates opened & closed signs in our society. It is difficult to recognize a system of inequity that privileges us Dr @CamaraJones #SGIM19 recognize the 2 sides of the sign!
Racism exists even if we don’t see it. Racism is a SYSTEM of power to structure opportunity & assign value. Based on social interpretation of how one looks
Racism unfairly disadvantages individuals & communities & unfairly advantages others & saps strength of whole society

Dr Emilia De Marchis work w @SIREN_UCSF on social needs screening in health care settings. Pt’s find it acceptable & think HCP should know about pt’s social needs #SGIM19
1/3 Wow what a day for mentees at #sgim19! First up future @nyuschoolofmed student Kanan Shah showing that docs who see patients 4-5 days a week have to spend almost 3 hours in #EHR on each day off to keep up
2/3 next, future med student Emma Simon showing that a simple #EHR template can give internists the info they need post procedure, have >95% uptake and reduce calls to proceduralists #sgim19
3/3 and finally junior faculty Himali Weerahandi with an oral presentation showing that patients given home health services do better after discharge from SNF than those just sent home #sgim19

How to ⬆️ retention? (Hint: Housing would make a lot easier) but until we have housing, need to decrease mortality from OUD. Role for navigators?
Couldn’t do this w/o insurance coverage for Bupe. (Too confront opioid epidemic, need Medicaid). Grateful to live in expansion state.
