1. A thread on taking back control of borders.

(Or not).

Unpacking the confusion.
2. The UK government claims to want to take back control of borders.

But did they mean control of settlement immigration? Or actual control of border crossings?

Do they even know what they want to control?
3. In reality, as a non-Schengen country, and as an island, the UK has always had full control of its border crossing points. UK is surrounded by water which helps. The only exception perhaps is the open Irish border but that’s down to the Good Friday Agreement not EU membership.

Shortage of European workers is a major contributing factor to Britain’s economic gloom.
‘Britannia Chained: Brexit has Left the UK in a State of National Decline’ – Byline Times bylinetimes.com/2023/01/31/bri…
According to the IMF, even Russia – hit by massive international sanctions – is set to out-perform the UK. When it comes to our nearest global competitors, the self-imposed economic sanctions of Brexit appear to outweigh all others.
Even Russia...
Disaster capitalists, r/w populists and fascists have hobbled a once stable country that rarely suffered the sort of political ruptures that affected other nations. 7 years of BS since the vote to leave the EU, Britain has become a byword for political chaos.

@Dominic2306 is talking again. What have we learned? Did he ever have a plan for a successful Brexit? And did it involve staying in, or leaving, the #SingleMarket? THREAD
@Dominic2306’s discussion with @DavidGauke is worth a read. He admits that costs of 🇬🇧 leaving SM were supposed to fall on 🇮🇪. This is foolhardy in itself, but symptomatic of the lack of a wider plan. /1
@Dominic2306 @DavidGauke Staying in SM under #EFTA would of course solve #NI. But did @VoteLeave say to stay in, or to leave, the Single Market? Well, both. But the important promise was that of no adverse changes. /2

Lord @DavidGHFrost isn’t happy with the #NorthernIrelandProtocol that HE negotiated. He wants to “return to normal”. Isn’t #EU membership “normal”? That avoided ALL the problems Frosty is griping about and it's what he supported BEFORE the #EUReferendum. Watch ½-minute video.
Before the #EUreferendum, the then Mr @DavidGHFrost strongly supported the case for Britain to REMAIN in the #EU. He said then AGAINST #Brexit: “Even the best-case outcome can’t be as good as what we have now.”
As for the UK going it alone, @DavidGHFrost said BEFORE the #EUreferendum:

“The more independent your national trade policy is, the more difficult it is to negotiate completely barrier-free access to any other country.”

It’s been an especially stormy start to the year for the UK, which finds itself at ground zero for the spread of a new and highly infectious strain of the coronavirus, even as it struggles to cope with withdrawal from the European Union’s single market and customs zone.
Yet the UK’s financial markets are performing relatively respectably year-to-date as investors focus on the UK’s strong vaccination performance and look ahead to the possibility of economic reopening and recovery.
In this video interview, Nick Andrews examines the forces at work and weighs the risks facing the UK economy and markets. vimeo.com/505535421 #UK #Brexit #pound #sterling #assetallocation #EU #singlemarket

You all know the story of little Hans Brinker – a story about a small act with a big effect. Hans saved his city from certain disaster by plugging a hole in the dike with his finger.

But do you know the story of Maarten Rijkers?

Truth be told, Hans Brinker only made the story famous: the finger really belonged to an unknown lock keeper in Haarlem, whose story is in Mary Mapes Dodge’s book.

But since Hans’ story has become eponymous with that of the lock keeper, we’ll just leave the opening as it is.
Back to this Maarten Rijkers.

Unlike Hans, he is a real person, who was somewhere in his twenties when on a sunny afternoon in 1988 he kissed a queen in Amsterdam.

1/10: We are 12 days from legal #Brexit. What will happen on 31 Jan? What will it feel like on 1 Feb? More important, what will happen after that? In a nutshell, nothing will change & everything will change. And harder choices lie ahead. Thread of 10...
2/10: On 31 Jan BJ will declare #Brexit done & hail a brave new world. Big Ben may bong. Flags will come down. But on 1 Feb we will wake to an eerily familiar world. Until Dec 31 at least all rights & obligations of EU membership continue, though we will not be at the table..
3/10: Ministers will soon say that the fact the sky has not fallen in after we have ”got #Brexit done” proves “doomsters & gloomsters” wrong. They will try to shift public debate on to other things. But Brexit will still be there & will not be done..

Migration controls threaten job shock to Bristol

75% of EU27 citizens, living Bristol region would be unable to work in the UK under proposals to come into affect in 2021.

Labour & Tories voted away the #SingleMarket & FoM.

Bristol would come to a grinding halt without our migrants.
It's affected both my doctor and dentist, both who have found it difficult to recruit when EU27 citizens leave.

This makes me so angry, even more so when most local MPs aren't interested.

Part of the issue I think is that MPs are just not interested enough to learn.

This is my MP, making the case for using the "profit" from migrant workers to contribute to towns which haven’t benefited from economic growth.

Today #SteveBarclay announced he has signed legislation to repeal the European Communities act 1972. #Parliament is not in session. Which date has been set for the repeal? Did parliament have a chance to scrutinize this process?
The May regime ignored the house of lord's amendment not to repeal this act on Brexit day (ERG pressure meant the commons ignored that). Is #SteveBarclay using #HenryVIII powers here to any extent? There was meant to be a transition after exit day...

To "get back our sovereignty" and "get back control of our borders".

1. Am I the only one infuriated with the view that if @theresa_may and @jeremycorbyn agree a #brexit #customsunion then all is fine. This ignores the fact that it is leaving the #singlemarket that is the killer for business making, importing or exporting products. Why? A thread..
2/ Much of the commercial debate around #Brexit has focused on whether we stay in the #CustomsUnion or not. That is because this is the current battle between #Conservatives and #Labour. If Labour prevailed, and the UK remains in a Customs Union, then the tariff issue dies
3/ However, the much bigger problem relates to the #SingleMarket. Neither main party wants to stay in the Single Market because you can’t have free movement of goods, services and capital without accepting the same for people. But abandoning the single market means...

Please consider this:

Did any Central & Eastern European country joining 🇪🇺 2004

Dear Remainers,
Generally, you believe in experts. They power your phones. They heal you when you're sick. You trust them on things YOU don't understand. But those you need to speak to don't. So stop quoting expert predictions. Use things we ALL already believe and agree on.
Generally, countries have different laws✅
EU countries make ONE set of laws together✅
Adapting your products to the laws of different countries costs more✅
Getting your goods checked by each country costs money✅
Being in the EU therefore lowers costs✅
#SingleMarket
EU Countries are physically closer✅
Sending goods to China costs more time/money than sending them to France✅
Prioritising trading across larger distances costs more✅
UK negotiating against an EU with a combined GDP 6xUK has not been simple✅
Doesn't bode well✅

1)A #brexit thread on 'frictionless' trade:

@bbcsoutheast decided to see how easy/difficult it would be to export an item from #Switzerland 🇨🇭(outside the EU) to the UK🇬🇧(inside the EU) to get an idea of what British businesses might have to do after #Brexit.
2) It’s obviously not an exact analogy. Switzerland is in the #singlemarket for many goods and in #Schengen, for example. But it’s outside the customs union, so the idea was to get a sense of what friction might need to be tackled.
3/ The item we decided to buy was this (it's a car exhaust):
