1. Good faith requires fairly considering as many possible interpretations as possible before responding, giving the benefit of the doubt, and, if none or more than one interpretation makes sense, asking for clarification.

2. Good faith requires a willingness to be corrected and the forthcomingness to acknowledge when and where you were.

The first thing to understand is that how the problem is defined already entails a solution. There are three main ways in which the problem has been defined and thus three broad strategies for addressing it:

Approach 1
The problem: mangers in charge of hiring and promotion are biased/racist/sexist/classist.

The Solution: change their beliefs OR their behavior (i.e. make their views or their actions less biased, racist, etc)

2/ Before I get into it, a disclaimer: my advice is not relevant for people not focused on publishing, who work in a handful of elite programs, and subfields/methods where there is an emphasis on a few high impact pubs. I will get to these at the end of the thread.

3/ Still, this thread applies to folks teaching in most PhD programs, MA programs, or teaching intensive school that want a balance of research and teaching at time of promotion.

1) Never keep lab meetings on Monday, Tuesday and weekends. Putting on Monday or Tuesday will force them to work on weekends. Respect the social life of PhD students. It's also good for their mental wellbeing.

2) Regularly talk about the long term and short term impact that the PhD project is going to produce, like patents, high impact journal papers as well as the societal impact. This will motivate the PhD scholars to work harder, smarter and better.

For years, until now, my theory is haunted by the assumption that my advisor helped me developed it. She did not. I sound like a bona fide research assistant in her writings when in fact the work she is using was pulled and rephrased from my dissertation #metoo

It is important I did this/do this as a senior woman of color scholar because I am not the first and definitely not the last to experience this in academia.

Taking advanced math in HS influences academic success, what careers we pursue, and how much $ we make. Studies find racial gaps in who takes Calculus in HS & Algebra I in MS, but there is little research on race and adv math course taking during the transition to HS. 2/

This study uses national data to examine adv math course taking in 9th grade for students on the accelerated track who took Alg I+ in 8th grade and students on the standard track who took <Alg I. I also look at the role of performance factors & parents, teachers & counselors 3/
