Earlier today, @STS_News asked about researchers studying the history of #standardization.

That reminded me that I haven't had a chance to share some of the highlights from @LindaHall_org's latest exhibition: The #Standards That Built America!

Time for a 🧵! (1/8) #histSTM #STS
Curated by reference assistant David Crawford, this exhibition showcases a few of the 100,000+ industrial #standards in LHL's stacks.

Many of these standards were once part of the Engineering Societies Library & are hard to find anywhere else! (2/8)

libguides.lindahall.org/standards_spec…
LHL's #standards are often overlooked compared to our #RareBooks & #Journals, but they tell an important #engineering story. Groups like @ansidotorg, @IEEESA & @isostandards have helped promote interoperability, safety & accessibility in a variety of technological contexts. (3/8)

Officially finished the second semester @TUM_STS!

Was asked recently: "What would you say are the most impactful pieces you've read so far?"

To mark this accomplishment of completing the first year of graduate school - here is an #STS inspired reading list (12 total)

📚 🧵
They are broken up into two broad themes:

- Most impactful to me personally (First 6)

- Most impactful and now foundational to #STS as a discipline (after the person graduated from the field) (Second 6)

*Just my opinion, so eager to hear what others might choose*
'A clean kill?: the role of Patriot in the Gulf War' by #STS icons the late Trevor Pinch @STSCornell & Harry Collins of @cardiffuni

"but to see that this fog was just a dense version of the fog through which #golemscience always has to strain to see."

A thread on the life of Rohith Vemula, Dalit PhD scholar at the University of Hyderabad, who was born this day in 1989. Follow the thread to know more about this beacon of hope for all of us who dare to imagine and hope for an anti-caste future.
Rohith was born to Radhika Vemula in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. Radhika is a Dalit woman who herself faced casteist treatment from her adoptive family. Rohith's experiences of he and his mother being treated differently due to their Dalit identities informed his later politics.
Rohith was doing a PhD in #science, #technology and #society (#STS) studies. In 2015, things took a turn for the worst. The then-president of UoH's ABVP unit, N. Susheel Kumar, complained to the univ. against alleged physical assault by Rohith and 4 other Ambedkarite students.

Took their time getting to this one. @histoftech pointed it out four and a half years ago () and it's been used as a teaching example by #sts folk (). A natural outcome of Google's "launch, quietly stop development, forget" mentality.
FWIW, today's urgent priority fix (as trumpeted, absurdly, by Oliver Dowden) relates to the missing image only. The timeline is still completely unable to handle non-consecutive terms in office.

I suppose it's a mercy they stopped at Bonar Law, because this would make a right mess in the C19. Gladstone on this reading was an old buffer who somehow out of nowhere ended up as PM of a shaky minority administration for a year and a bit in the 1890s.

A fantastic thread on specific examples of breeding applicable interdisciplinarity.

In fact, I think we can go further, and designers can help.
There's a trend here.

In a lot of different environments, designers are realizing there's useful and powerful theories, insights, and communities from disciplines they never considered; and there happens to be a reactionary clash from the communities who live in that space.
We have an opportunity here.

Sometimes that clash is valuable, because it offers space for people to acknowledge, voice, and catalyze a community to make their knowledge known.

But sometimes, we can connect without friction, and towards a collective goal.

🧬 In order to combat GMO pseudoscience we must be empathetic towards the people with a valid fear of what biotech science can bring. Folks like @GMWatch, @USRightToKnow, @biobeef, @foe_us, @beef, @yesmaam74 etc...
🍔 The @ImpossibleFoods GMO burger is tearing up the scene waking people up to the gustatory possibilities tech can bring to the plate. Dozens of companies with similar innovations have sprung up. Too many to list here.
🤝 There's an opportunity here giving human tastebuds less influence in the cognitive dissonance clash that otherwise pits humans against others.

Generally debates our problems with the Internet concentrate on application layer issues, such as platforms and algorithms, while the Internet architecture is still perceived as engine of innovation. This is WRONG.
The Internet architecture is where the privatization and commercialization of the Internet has started.

Up to the early 90s commercial traffic was actually forbidden on the Internet.

Also innovation has been made very hard in the architecture, especially on core protocols.
Initially all computers connected to the Internet were equal.

Also this was undermined through Internet architecture (with the introduction of NAT directionality).
