1. Hey @FoxNews, your recent complaints about the LGBTQ+ flag and how the American flag is the 'only approved flag' in America overlooked the fact that American Indian tribes are sovereign nations within the United States. It's important
2. to recognize that American Indian tribes are distinct Nations with their own governments, laws, cultures, and histories. As a news outlet, it's crucial to accurately report. Image
3. You are so Patriotic 🙄 So proud of the Constitution. But what about Article VI, Clause 2? The part that says: Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land?

I am a recent but huge fan of @Freakonomics podcast. I've also been enjoying @DrBapuPod by @AnupamBJena

Episode today was about #ArtificialIntelligence in #medicine and I want to share my concerns about the discussion on racial disparities in knee pain (starting at 19:00)

A 🧵
#1 - The suggestion that only pain that can be explained by pathology seen on a knee xray is "real, organic, genuine" and other pain is "in someone's head" is hugely problematic and detrimental to patients seeking care for #Chronicpain and providers.

nature.com/articles/s4159…
This is not aligned with the role of nervous system sensitization, psychological factors, and other mechanisms underlying the chronic pain experience.
Imp to note that #machinelearning model from xrays explained only 16% of variability in pain overall

#PeterSloly was the 1st Black Police Chief in Ottawa’s history. There were high hopes in #BIPOC communities he would spearhead reform following the 2016 death of #AbdirahmanAbdi after an altercation with police. #Sloly faced significant pushback within the force from the getgo.
In 2020 I spoke with #MattSkof the head of the Ottawa Police Association after Skof took issue with “Sloly's assertion that systemic racism exists within policing and accused him of scapegoating a rookie officer accused of racially profiling a Black driver.”
Here’s my 2020 interview with #MattSkof head of the Ottawa Police Association in which he takes issue with then #Ottawa Police Chief #PeterSloly’s assertion that #systemicracism was a problem in policing. cbc.ca/player/play/17…

This is what targeted racial harassment looks like: nitpicking things like “smiled” or “wore clothes like a celebrity, as a celebrity” or “bought cookware.” It is part of the “gold digger” narrative.
This is common in #healthcare “#professionalism” where there is hazing & bullying by racist &/or classist made up non-rules lacking standards…yet people are called “breaking the rules.”

It’s exactly how bullies operate: double standards, mislabel/smear, exclude, marginalize.
In the U.K., “BAME” includes the formerly colonized, thus making race constructs or power different from U.S. as latter had race-based chattel slavery.

Thing is, those formerly colonized have many who have internalized self hate & racism.

In 1957, #ReinholdNiebhur predicted why #evangelicals are paralyzed by #CRT & #systemicracism discussions, and so on, today. It all started from tragic flaws in the theology and preaching of Billy Graham.
Billy Graham and the evangelical “form of the Christian faith,” writes Niebuhr, “relies on an oversimplification of the issues in order to create the ‘crisis’ that prompts conversion and the acceptance of the Christian faith.
The best way of inducing this crisis is to call attention to some moral dereliction of the person, in which some accepted moral norm has been transgressed and the conscience is consequently uneasy.

Now that the country is trying to return to “normal”, expect the #Racism & #Retaliation to re-emerge. Some of the same people, even in our industry, who were involved in the #favoritism #nepotism #cronyism gossip and whisper campaigns -that comprise the foundation of racism…
Are returning to their old habits. Let’s not forget that some of these same people cried, protested, complained and railed against #SystemicRacism, simply because they had to, to avoid being exposed and branded as what and who they are. They key is to recognize and call them out
just as we did before #GeorgeFloyd was killed. I’m grateful for the allies of all races who’ve stuck their necks out literally to support racial justice in the last year. Without them, like it or not as @RobinGivhan suggested, it took those voices to bring the kind of pressure

Dear Fellow White People,

I am a gay woman of Jewish ethnicity living in #Texas and have faced discrimination in my life. However, my experiences are through the lens of a white woman, someone who doesn’t face the daily #SystemicRacism embedded in our society and institutions.
Let’s be clear. The USA was built on the backs of slaves, human beings who were considered property for no other reason than the color of their skin, and the institutions within this country were both developed and implemented by, and for, white people.
By virtue of this fact, white people have the inherent privilege of living in a world that was created for their benefit.

So #Resign is trending in regard to the Crown–Indigenous Relations Min. Carolyn Bennett who stated in public that she will wear orange and STILL celebrate a Country "that MADE some very terrible mistakes."

Hooboy this might be a thread or just a couple of tweets but...

1/7
She stated that she will wear orange and still celebrate Canada in the very same statement that suggests that "mistakes were made".

Past tense.

@JustinTrudeau has already stated on Twitter that #SystemicRacism exists in Canada.

This is not past tense, it is ongoing.

2/7
Now the Sitting Prime Minister of Canada is no shining example when it comes to any credibility when it comes to as he put it, "Our most important relationship" with Indigenous but he is still the PM.

That she still has a job...how do I put this?

Gyasi Symonds jaywalked on his way to The Nook and wasn’t the only one to do so, as he trailed behind 4 White women who did the same.

But it was only Symonds, a visibly Black man, that was approached by two #HRP police officers for jaywalking. #Halifax saltwire.com/atlantic-canad…

Symonds was later called down to his office's lobby, where the two were waiting for him. Image

Word “racism” silenced, actively, by #MedEd #MedTwitter #healthcare “#professionalism” & “communication” labels

Saying “racism” offends or “hurts feelings” > actual #BLM deaths

If #professionalism itself is racist -makes sense that word suppressed
@FutureDocs
What @ayshakhoury experienced pushes out & silences many

If the editors of @JAMA_current resist hearing word “structural racism” then they certainly are not publishing papers using that word

How do I comment on racism
How do I bring about change
What can I do to ensure
It doesn't happen again
I watch the news
I hear the recordings
"I can't breathe"
What was he thinking
And then I hear from friends
I hear the reality
The hate and fear
The embedded inequality..
#racism
What can I do?
What can I say?
I can only be me
Speak as me
But I am speechless
When it comes to the injustice
I see in the US
But also here in the UK
Experienced by people
Of different races

I can't know the fear
Or know the injustice
I haven't experienced hatred

Police claim “unlawful assembly” after killing 20 year old young black man, with his mom on the phone and his girlfriend beside him as they drove to visit his older brother and see his new home. Here is the PDF from the @aclu_mn re: protests. #BlackLivesMatter
Minneapolis police knew, or should have known, the killing of a young black man stopped in his vehicle, will result in protests. The police should have been prepared for protests and de-escalated it. Journalists have been reporting that police officers are quitting the “force”
because of fear of danger after the George Floyd trial outcome. Therefore, they knew of the repercussions of killing, wrongfully, a young black man. #EnoughIsEnough #StopSystemicRacism

Reading the #SaferYEG Task Force report, I can’t shake how a white-dominant Edmonton City Council—in appointing the police to this task force—reproduced the same systems of oppression 15K+ Edmontonians rallied against last year after George Floyd’s murder. A THREAD... 🧵
I have a world of respect & gratitude for the racialized TF members on their impossible task: negotiate with police behind closed doors to create this report. This report was never going to be a full expression of the community’s desires with police at the table. How could it?
Why did the police need to be on this Task Force at all? Why couldn’t EPS make a presentation to the Task Force like other orgs did? Would the recommendations have been stronger if police hadn’t been at the table? Did #yegcc leave BIPOC to take on the cops so they don’t have to?

No @senatortimscott your comments are diabolical, disgusting and disgraceful. You should know better as a Black man than to spew such trash. It’s not surprising. I am a constituent and I will be contacting your office. I’m a student of history and I’m hard pressed to find
Anywhere in American history where “woke supremacy” enslaved Africans in the Americas, committed Native American Genocide, Seceded from the Union to uphold white supremacy and slavery, committed domestic terrorism acts - lynchings, race massacres, church & house bombings, rapes
and I missed the history chapter where woke supremacists stormed the Capitol to overthrow the US government.
You sound like a fool who’s a tool of the White Supremacist power structure and status quo. You reek of opportunism and self loathing.

All of this. #MyStanceHasNotChanged.
The fact that we willingly expose our kids to #COVID19 is beyond me. Opening schools knowing full well structural racism exists preventing adequate social distancing & the lack of proper ventilation is a setup for further #RacialDisparities
▶️ 25% of Black 9th graders are in classrooms w/ >40 students: 2x rate of Hispanics, 3x rate of Whites
▶️ Urban vs Rural, 12.5x more likely to be overcrowded
▶️ richest 10% of districts spend 10x more than poorest 10%: literally use old buildings w/ poor ventilation & high lead
The impact of #SystemicRacism has been far reaching and long standing in #Education.

This month we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth. But we also know that we need much more than 28 days to recognize the importance of Black people and Black communities in British Columbia’s history. This needs to be integrated into our curriculum year round. 1/ #bcpoli #bced
It is not just about acknowledging; we’ve erased history in BC. Until we stop, we will not come to terms with the amazing contributions of Black people and communities to our province. Addressing systemic racism has to be done systematically - and education is central to that. 2/
As @AdamPOlsen has pointed out we cannot address racism one silo at a time. As legislators, it’s our responsibility to proactively address #systemicracism - it is going to take looking at all our institutions, all of our systems, to address racism effectively. 3/
