A quick thread on #Algeria's slow embrace of renewable energy investment.

1/10
In the midst of the oil boom in the mid-2000s, #Algeria was making a LOT of money.

Sonatrach's 2008 revenue was US$76 billion.

US$76 billion...

2/10
There was a lot of pressure on #Algeria to create a sovereign wealth fund (SWF.)

Everyone was doing it. Saudi. Libya. UAE. Etc.

You could take your oil and gas receipts, invest them in diversified assets, and double, triple, quadruple their value!

No publication fact checks more rigorously than ⁦@NewYorker⁩ imho & no journalist covers MENA better than ⁦David Kirkpatrick⁩ (@ddk_nyc⁩).

This ✍️—on why Ghannouchi’s arrest matters not just for #Tunisia but for the world—is a must-read. 🧵 newyorker.com/news/daily-com…
“The imprisonment of a leader as singular as Ghannouchi,” Kirkpatrick writes, is not just a blow to #Tunisia’s democracy. It’s “a setback to the wider world.

For Islamists who espouse violence, his imprisonment is a vindication—new evidence of the futility of the ballot box.” Image
Tragically, I couldn’t agree more.

Anyone watching closely knows #Tunisia’s return to repressive dictatorship will be a boon—to authoritarian rulers & jihadist recruiters—who argue Islam, liberalism & democracy can’t mix.

Saied’s persecution of RG vindicates jihadist narratives

The Continuing Regional Rapprochement of #Syria and #Assad

A thread 🪡

In January I wrote about how, after over 10 years of brutal war pushed and funded by outside powers, the #MiddleEast was accepting that the #Syrian Arab Republic, led by #Assad would stay in power.

The #USA and #NATO countries have been unhappy about things turning out this way, especially as #Syria is a close ally of #Russia. However, the Muslim states of the region are seeing that the future is cooperation, and that the SAR has won the war.

The U.S. can stop Tunisia's descent into full-blown dictatorship. Here's how. The practical steps I lay out in this @ForeignAffairs article are actually things the Biden administration can do. But it has to do them now.

foreignaffairs.com/tunisia/dont-b…
Often people mention Tunisia's still-pending IMF bailout in passing, but no one has really laid out in detail how using the loan as leverage might actually work. There are risks, which I acknowledge in the piece. But on balance this is the best (and likely last) option available.
Yes it's unlikely. But institutions are made up of individuals who have agency. And it's possible that enough people in the State Department and the White House might wake up and at least consider putting brakes on the IMF deal. It's doable.

I want to introduce you to some of the kind, dignified ppl—most of them card-carrying UNHCR-certified refugees—surviving in utterly inhumane conditions in one of #Tunisia’s 🇹🇳 very poshest neighbourhoods.

This is what President Saied’s “Great Replacement” speech has wrought:🧵⬇️ Image
In the Lac neighbourhood of Tunis, amidst UN offices, foreign embassies & some of 🇹🇳’s fanciest cafés, a large group of refugees—the majority of whom I met were card-carrying UNHCR (@Refugees) certified—have been camping in very cold, rainy weather.

They are hungry & unsafe.
I spoke to 33 (group is much larger) over a few hours this afternoon.

Most were evicted overnight, often w/ violence, by landlords who either enthusiastically supported Kais Saied’s Feb 21 Great Replacement tirade, or feared they’d be criminalised for renting to Black migrants.

Another journalist called me this afternoon to ask if my 5-month-old had any clothes she’d outgrown because there was a woman with 3-month-old baby sleeping rough outside the @UNmigration in Tunis after being kicked out of her apartment. 1/

#Assad's regime, its supporters & a plethora of uninformed commentators are driving a call for punitive sanctions on the regime to be removed to facilitate aid delivery to #Syria.

This is absolute nonsense.

It has no basis in facts.

It's nothing but a regime talking point.
Let’s start with some facts:

- 90% of the multi-billion dollar aid effort that goes through #Damascus comes from the U.S, U.K, E.U. & #Canada -- who also happen to be the x4 sanctioning entities.

In all cases, humanitarian waivers are in place to ensure the free flow of aid.
The West has consistently funded & backed the free-flow of aid across all of #Syria & its *our* money that's paid for it.

It’s #Assad's regime that has systematically weaponized aid since 2011 -- diverting it away from opposition communities as part of its siege & starve agenda.

The admin of Bab al-Hawa crossing -- the sole route open for UN aid to NW #Syria -- confirms that 3 days in, zero aid has arrived from the international community.

#Assad's regime is getting aid from the @UN + #Russia, #Egypt, #Algeria, #UAE, #Saudi, #Tunisia, #Iraq & #Iran. Image
@UN In NW #Syria, financial donations are coming in from abroad, but nothing in terms of real-world assistance.

They need manpower, fuel, equipment, food, shelter etc.

#Egypt managed to get a team of rescue specialists in to aid @SyriaCivilDefe, but it's unclear how they got there. Image
@UN @SyriaCivilDefe The earthquake + @UN inaction/risk aversion has achieved what #Assad's regime never managed:

-- NW #Syria is now fully under siege; from the south (regime areas) & the north (via disaster-hit #Turkey).

Only concerted international action will see this siege ended.
