Fourth post in the #WildlifeWeek series. Today’s post is more of a #reviving one than #reintroduction.

Day 4 – Return of the #bandits to #Chambal !

The Red Crowned Roofed #turtle is a #species of #freshwater turtle endemic to South #Asia.
1/9
Historically the species was widespread in the #Ganga River, both in #India and #Bangladesh. Extirpated from most of its former range but currently it has dwindled a last surviving population of less than 500 adult individuals in the #wild.
2/9
Their population reduced drastically due to depredation of eggs and hatchlings by Golden #jackals, #habitat degradation due to #pollution and illegal sand mining in the floodplains. They are also extensively #poached for their meat and shell.

Conversations between #Turtle & #MP
Few days before heading to Ireland, MP is coming home late after working all day on presentations he is invited to give @ECMP2022 in #Dublin, surprised to see his buddy slowing coming up his driveway.

MP: Hey buddy, what are you doing?

1/
MP: It might have taken U some time to come all the way from park

Turtle: Yes doc, I heard U were heading to @TourismIreland island & wanted to join U. Since it would take me more time & I didn’t want to rush, I thought I will come over & rest behind your house till we leave
2/
MP: What do U mean & how did U know?

TL: Well, my 3rd cousin from my mom side who lives in #WicklowMountains close to Dublin told me that you were coming there soon

MP: What, how did she know?

Anyone wants a step-by-step tutorial on creating this lunar landing game using #Python's turtle module?

#coding #programming #100daysodcode #learnPython #LearnToCode
This is not a rhetorical question. I haven't written the article yet, so whether I do or not depends on your responses…
Ok, Ok, Ok, you've all convinced me. Now I just need to stop playing the game, and start writing the article.

Easier said than done…

I want to start a new thread story. Not sure how long it will be and I may use different prompts: #vss365 #vssmagic #vssnature etc etc ... I love reading about legends and folk lore, and in my fantasy writing I often create my own myths. So this will be just a fun exercise...
According to #lore &myths of old, griffins nestled on these cliffs long ago. They swooped down on the unsuspecting;carried them off never to be seen again.
Griffins were not elemental creatures, but air & earth did have dominion over them; their only enemy -fire.
#vss365 #vssmagic
"I helped your troupe avoid #shadow and #gore," said the dark wizard simply, implying that he saved us from the mythical griffins. I gaped at him. "And now for what you promised."

"No," I was careful not to get trapped in words, "I said: after you summon her."

Happy 130th Birthday to us!

The TTFNC was founded on July 10th 1891 in order to: “...give pleasure to its members by observation of animal, insect and plant life in Trinidad”.

This thread will revisit some key milestones in our long history! 1/n #130yearsofTTFNC Image
In 1892, the first issue of our peer-reviewed journal was published as an outlet for our members to publish interesting and novel #NaturalHistory observations. It continues to this day as "Living World, the Journal of the TTFNC". ttfnc.org/livingworld/in… 2/n #130yearsofTTFNC Image
The first issue of our journal included J. E. Tanner's breakthrough discovery that #leafcutter #ants (locally known as #bachacs) cultivate fungus & feed it to their larvae, rather than eating the leaves directly as previously thought. 🐜🌿🍄3/n #130yearsofTTFNC ImageImage

NITI Aayog Islands Development Project: Megathread
The project involves:
- Redevelopment and Industrialisation of #GreatNicobar
- Redevelopment into a Model City of other islands, starting with #LittleAndaman Island

PART 1: REDEVELOPMENT AND INDUSTRIALISATION OF #GREATNICOBAR ISLAND
- The project involves construction of an #airport, #port, & a transportation system
- #Galathea WLS was denotified for the project
- The WLS is known for being the nesting site of the #LeatherbackTurtle. [2/16]
The denotification of the WLS in January contradicted the National Marine #Turtle Action Plan (released Feb 2021) which declared the Galathea WLS as one of India’s few ‘Important #Coastal and #Marine #Biodiversity Areas’ and ‘Important Marine Turtle #Habitats’. [3/16]

#Turtle folks - if you've built your own basking #traps , what have you used for floats? Am looking to replicate design in @tony_gamble1 (2006) pub, but want to avoid using Styrofoam if possible (and affordable).

1/n Image
Will need to clean & sanitize traps between sites to prevent spread of #disease & #invasive species, so the more durable & less absorbent, the better.

Maybe capped & sealed PVC pipe floats could work? Any other ideas? 💡🐢

A #Turtle with a Permanent Smile was Brought Back from #Extinction | by @RachelNuwer & @nytimes

“If we didn’t intervene when we did," WCS's Steven G. Platt tells the paper of the Burmese roofed turtle, "this turtle would have just been gone.”

nytimes.com/2020/09/03/sci…
By the mid-20th century, threats like overfishing and overharvesting of eggs had driven the species to the brink. Image
The recovery effort, led by @WCSMyanmar, @TurtleSurvival and Myanmar Forest Department, involves:

👉Monitoring nesting sites
👉Collecting and incubating eggs
👉Head starting hatchlings to give them the best chance of success.

Do you know what inspired the Yogis to come up with many asanas? It was nature, the early yogis were influenced by what was around them. Read - Thread on Yoga!
#Dog - Downward Facing Dog aka Adho Mukha Svanasana. Its a popular pose which is also a part of the Surya Namaskar. This helps to increase flexibility and release tension. If you have dogs around, you would have noticed that dogs stretch their body in this pose.

#Cow Pose aka Bitilasana & #Cat Pose aka Marjariasana. Usually these two are done together. It helps in spine flexibility. The breathing exercise attached with this helps in relaxation. This is common posture in which the cow stands and cat stretches.

It's International Day for Biodiversity! Reply with your favourite animal or plant. Like this tweet and I'll share one endemic species from the Philippines 💚 #IDB2020 #BiodiversityDay
My fave bird is the endangered Visayan tarictic hornbill 🥰 In the wild, this species can now only be found in Negros and Panay islands. Follow Talarak Foundation on IG for news on their captive breeding program for these. #IBD2020 #BiodiversityDay Image
Staying with island endemics theme, here's a Visayan spotted deer. They're endangered. Endemic to West Visayan region but presently only known from forest patches in Negros & Panay. @silliman_u CENTROP has a captive breeding program for this species. #IBD2020 #BiodiversityDay Image

#HerpFall2019 students will check traps & learn about #fieldwork notes & disinfection protocols tomorrow!

Hoping the #herp gods look kindly upon us & fill our hoop nets, minnow traps, & cover objects with critters!

Stay tuned! (All wrk w/appropriate permits) Image
‘Twas a good day in #HerpFall2019 !

Turned up 7 species in central MN during #fieldwork today!

Highlights: a feisty female painted #turtle , & SO MANY blue spotted #salamanders , boreal chorus #frogs , & wood frogs.

I think it’ll be a fun year 😊
Here’s the class posing next to a statue of a painted turtle (that you can hardly see 😆...we’ll get better at team pics) Image

Happy day listening to #frogs frolic. Boreal chorus, gray tree, and American #toads were calling in force!
Saw several amplectant amorous Anaxyrus americanus (American toads) & the fruits of their labors

(Alliteration is #toad -ally awesome)
And hubby spotted a painted turtle chilling in the shallows.

We have been seeing the devastating news of the last known female #Rafetus swinhoei’s death. While we talk of captive breeding and building assurance colonies, I have a few thoughts. A thread. Disclaimer: This thread is about South Asia and mostly India. #Turtles #Tortoises
South Asian #turtles face extreme threats to their survival because of habitat loss, poaching and uncontrolled hunting. While assurance colonies are important to protect critically endangered species, how much attention are we paying to find out what is their natural history...
What is the ecology of these threatened species? What are we doing to ensure their survival in the wild?

There's been so much hype about #Zanzibar, but at the same time, a few people weren't particularly thrilled. Had to go find out for myself ,so some friends and I planned a trip. What I think? Top rating for beaches, good food, so much to see, history. Read this thread... #Travel
From #DaresSalaam, you have the options of flying or going by ferry to #Zanzibar. On the other hand, you could fly directly there. We spent a few days in Dar, then we went by ferry...it cost $35 per person for economy and $50 per person for VIP. We travelled in the VIP section.
It takes 1hr30mins to get to Zanzibar by ferry. It could take longer when it's turbulent. The hotel we stayed in was an hour away from stone town. We stayed in Nungwi which is North of Zanzibar. #Travel #Africa #Tanzania #holidays

This #FrogFriday I netted up some beautiful gray tree #frog #tadpoles (Hyla chrysoscelis or versicolor) and this gorgeous northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens) from a small, boggy wetland. 1/n ImageImageImageImage
I also chased (and consistently missed) several mink #frogs (Lithobates septentrionalis). These crafty ranids are said to have a foul, onion-y smell, so I was bummed not to get one in hand. Something to look forward to for the next #FrogFriday in #Minnesota ! 2/n ImageImage
Although it was #FrogFriday , there were other critters out and about, too. Including a pair of Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) and a few turtles (this one is a painted #turtle [Chrysemys picta]). 3/3 ImageImage
