This is why I do not think much of #SubhasChandraBose

Read this thread about the brutal treatment of #Malaya #Tamils by the Japanese in building the #DeathRailway

Bose wanted to take help from the Japanese in "liberating" #India.

(1/)
Why would the Japanese ever care about "liberating" India from #British rule?

The #Japanese were imperialists. They wanted to conquer all of Asia and the Pacific.

They had already annexed #Manchuria in 1931, and everyone knew about their brutal treatment of the #Chinese.

(2/)
The Japanese followed this up with the #RapeOfNanjing in 1937. This was followed by the establishment of #Unit731 in the city of #Harbin in Northeast #China, scene of one of the most egregious #CrimesAgainstHumanity in history, carried out by the #ImperialJapaneseArmy

1/ #MarkTwain once said "History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes". Today, I will talk about a conflict that strongly rhymes to the Russian invasion of #Ukraine. The Sino-Vietnamese War. The amount of similarities between both conflicts deserve our attention.
2/ Understanding the #Sino-#Vietnamese #War will help us understand the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, this may be a key to help us understand the position of the Vietnamese population. Note how the Vietnamese government has been particularly cold on their neutrality.
3/ The Sino-Vietnamese War is part of a complicated mess involving #Vietnam, #China, and #Cambodia. It started in February 1979 and ended 27 days later with a full withdrawal of Chinese forces. It is possible to argue that Vietnam won, even if China argues otherwise.

In this thread 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼students @MQLinguistics @Macquarie_Uni share what they've learned so far (1st quarter of semester)

Favorite facts about #languages and #cultures in #contact
In #Arabic we say: “Footprints indicate trajectory”, but I never thought that a wheel would reveal a culture. This is how #cultures can be traced through #languages. The reading made me feel like I am solving a puzzle more than exploring languages.
Think twice before starting to learn #English, cuz you’ll end up learning even more -- #German and #French, and more …
After all, it was the Anglo-Saxons and Normans who influenced the vocabulary!!
English is a mixed #language!

I particularly was surprised by the fact that early prints were made to be similar to handwriting, I thought that was quite genius idea! Also, I liked the fact that printed #books were given to the people whose main job was to decorate them! Image

#LanguageTrivia: A common catchphrase in English language for speech or text being indecipherable to a person is - "It's all Greek to me!" [1/n]
The genesis of this phrase is often cited as dating back to 1599 when Shakespeare's Casca conspiring against Julius Caesar said, “Those that understood him smiled at one another and shook their heads, but, for mine own part, it was Greek to me.” [2/n]
However, prior to its usage by Shakespeare, English poet Gascoigne, circa 1566, while interpreting an Italian comedy into english wrote, "This geare (talk) is Greeke to me; either it hangs not well together, or I am very dull of understanding: speak plaine, I pray you.” [3/n]
