How much has each country contributed to climate change through historical #emissions of #carbon dioxide, #methane and nitrous oxide?

Today, our new 'living' dataset for tracking national contributions to #warming is published in @ScientificData

buff.ly/3lILj8z @Peters_Glen @robbie_andrew @JoGuetschow @PFriedling @cleque
@ScientificData We provide estimates of the #warming caused by historical #emissions of #CO2, #CH4 and #N2O by 226 countries, for every year since 1850.

National warming contributions are further split into #fossil or #land use, land use change and #forestry (LULUCF) sources. @Peters_Glen @robbie_andrew @JoGuetschow @PFriedling @cleque
@ScientificData The top contributors to #warming up to 2021, through #emissions of all three gases since 1850, were:

USA: 0.28ยฐC / 17% of the warming caused by all global emissions
China: 0.20ยฐC / 12%
Russia: 0.10ยฐC / 6%
Brazil & India: 0.08ยฐC / 5%
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ , ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช , ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง , ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต , ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ : 0.03-0.05ยฐC each @Peters_Glen @robbie_andrew @JoGuetschow @PFriedling @cleque

Although future #warming will affect #vegetation, the big draw of this paper is the specific impact on #urban #forests. However, I would take quantitative estimates made with these #models with a grain of salt since they don't provide "true" urban climate signals. [1/n]
The study uses projections from 10 Global Climate Models (#GCMs) over 164 #cities; comparing modeled variables relevant to species survival against baseline values to predict future risk. A big issue is that most of these GCMs do not represent cities in any meaningful way. [2/n]
Several of the GCMs do not have explicit urban land cover or use simplified slab models. The former provides no urban-specific signals and the latter overestimates urban warming. More importantly, around half of the models use versions of the Community Land Model (CLM). [3/n]

"Itโ€™s too soon to say whether #climatechange is directly to blame for causing severe #heatwaves in these four powerhouse economies โ€” which also happen to be the top emitters of heat-trapping gases โ€” at roughly the same time, just days into summer."

1/ "While #globalwarming is making extreme heat more common worldwide, deeper analysis is required to tell scientists whether specific weather events were made more likely or more intense because of human-induced warming."
2/ "(A team of researchers who studied this springโ€™s devastating heat in #India found that climate change had made it 30 times as likely to occur.)"

@ipcc_ch reports that b/w 1971 & 2010, oceans absorbed over 90% of the heat gained by the planet due to #globalwarming. This led to #sealevel rise and has also resulted in higher frequency & intensity of #cyclones worldwide. #ClimateChange #MumbaiMustPrepare @mumbaismagic
Indian Ocean has also warmed but what is worrying is the higher rate of #warming in comparison to other global ocean basins. Data shows that Indian Oceanโ€™s rapid basin-wide warming of ~1degC over the last 60 yrs exceeds that of the global average of ~0.7 degC. #MumbaiMustPrepare
Arabian Sea & Bay of Bengal have also seen consistent warming in past decades. The trend in rise in sea surface temperature for BoB has been 0.16C/decade & 0.18C/decade for AS. Arabian Sea indeed has been warming quite rapidly and impacts are for us to see. #MumbaiMustPrepare

Hi shorebird folks! 1more4U2go! Migratory shorebirds connect. Movements, presence & phenotypes signal the state of habitats. Let's develop tracked individual migratory birds as sentinels (of connected parts) of Earth. #ornithology #globalchange @WaderStudy

Recently, 100 units of fossil energy produced 104 energy units of food, thanks soil-based processes. Now, 100 units fossil energy yield 16 food units, the 84% loss equals release of CO2 & active nitrogen threatening climate & biodiversity. #globalchange #dairy

Looking at scale of a country then, steep decline of specialized #dairy #farmland #wader, black-tailed #godwit (#grutto) in Netherlands signals growth of unsustainable, climate & biodiversity threatening, practices in agriculture. #globalchange @WaderStudy

1/ Under current #climate policies - those that govts have in place - we project warming will be ~2.9หšC by 2100. Under the #ParisAgreement pledges, temps will still rise by ~2.7หšC. The difference fm last update is methodological, not fm #climate action. bit.ly/CAT_CWNY_2020
2/ 2020 is the year governments agreed to increase their #ParisAgreement pledges, yet few have done so. These #warming projections show the urgency of this issue. The emissions gap is still yawning... bit.ly/CAT_CWNY_2020
3/ but with Chinaโ€™s announcement of carbon neutrality before 2060 and peaking emissions before 2030, our rough estimate is that this could be a game-changer, and could reduce the #ParisAgreement pledge projection by 0.2-0.3หšC.
