The setup of fantasy-adventures simply lends itself better to inborn specialness and outside forces conspiring to compel the main character along with no agency or real action of their own. 2

It’s that latter part that’s the issue. Nothing wrong with a character suddenly being thrust into adventure. It’s what they do that’s the real problem.
But it’s a heck of a lot harder to have this setup in a western, thriller, etc. 3

1. Indie publishers are sometimes called indie presses or small publishers or small presses. What is this thing? A publisher that operates on its own, & is not part of any large corporation or conglomerate. They may be tiny - but not all; Bloomsbury; Canongate, for example

2. A lot of indie publishers allow you to query your book without an agent, but not all. Some may be open to queries year round and some have defined submissions windows - or occasionally a surprise submission window. Be on your toes: these are NOT always advertised in advance

Here's a technique for movie concept creation I currently experiment with:

Using #screenwriting devices to prompt #GPT3 for basic story ideas & plots and then using those to generate #midjourney #aiart images depicting key scenes, characters & settings...

Not only is this a huge time saver for #writers when brainstorming or trying out different dramatic scenarios, but you also get images that further spark your imagination...

... and this inspiration goes both ways: images create new approaches to dramaturgical twists or character development, and storytelling devices literally create new perspectives on the story 🤯

More on 'feminine wiles' - I have been told more than once - BY WOMEN! - that these are 'anti feminist'. So are female antagonists or fem chrs doing appalling things.

When confronted with evidence of REAL female abusers, those commentators will say its cuz they 'had no choice'

It's obvious what is going on here: those commentators believe women are inherently helpless/victims of patriachy and thus incapable of creating coping strategies or utilising skills to deal with it.

Oooh boy. So much to unpack here

For starters, denying women have any agency is HELLA sexist.

So is the idea men are automatically hard-wired to be violent.

Plus they are 'evil' despite hardship making them do bad shit, whereas women literally get a 'get out of jail free' card cuz she 'can't help it'

In May, an opinion article was published in Fortune Magazine discussing the controversy surrounding ABA. Written by a lawyer named Ariana Cernius, the article outlines some of the problematic history & legal issues associated with ABA.

This week, an article was published from my home province of Ontario. The reporter, @JessicaRDurling, included multiple perspectives in her story. Durling brought together voices from families, proponents of ABA, as well as Autistic self-activists who speak out about its harms.

Professionals need to explain exactly what they mean by that, because gold standard is subjective; it will mean different things to different people.

Successful supports (as opposed to "therapies") will mean different things to different people.

Things I learned/advice:

1) Follow instructions—no identifiers. If you’re “known,” don’t name siblings or famous parents either, or your essay won’t be blinded. 1/n

2) Writing about people, dead or alive, remember they have privacy rights. If writing about medical or therapeutic relationships, HIPAA laws protect individuals for 50 yrs after death. So change the damn names, or say they’re pseudonyms. (Unless you have written consent) 2/n

3) Ask a friend to read your piece out loud back to you—the best way to catch awkward sentences or imprecise language. Lean on your writing friends to tell you when something is not clear. Careful with unusual or clever words: be clear! 3/n

AVAIL for staffing. I just wrapped up in a room as a staff writer. If you have LL one hour drama needs, I’M AVAIL. Now I’m gonna go into a thread about some of the things I’ve observed/learned/reinforced etc. This isn’t a “how to,” so take w/grain of salt. Hope it’s helpful.

The SR has to want to invest in you esp as LL. Of course, script has to be knockout to get the SR mtg & your persona has to be a fit BUT SR has to want you and invest in you and your growth. This sometimes can trump even a mediocre script etc if they believe in your voice.

Related to that if you’re like me where you did fwsp, asst, sold stuff and no dice. Know it’s not personal. You’re doing okay and if someone hasn’t told you you’re awesome, I am. Sometimes being qualified is a part of it. Now it’s a matter not of if but when. Hang in there.

They plug into a company and intuitively understand pain points better than the internal team.

1) A company gets a taste of really great copy/content from a writer who under-values their worth.

That person eventually leaves when they recognize that.

The company has calibrated its mental budget to an early star's insecure rates - struggles to find a replacement.

Or...

2) A lot of companies are sitting on Fiverr or Upwork.

Their writer hiring strategy?

Hope that they randomly draw a name of a talented, undervalued writer out of thousands, maybe millions, of people calling themselves "writers"
