If you haven’t heard the term youth voter suppression before, listen up. Back in 2020, when the Georgia runoff was triggered, there was a fresh opportunity for young people to register and vote, especially those who turned 18 after Election Day. #youthvote 1/

🎓THREAD: College students make up nearly 20 million eligible voters across the country and are often the target of voter suppression, especially students who move to another state for school. Let’s break down the ins and outs of student voting⤵️
✅Starting with the basics: College students can register to vote using their campus address. In 1979, #SCOTUS affirmed in Symm v. United States that blocking college students from using their school address to register to vote violated the 26th Amendment.
The 26th Amendment, ratified in 1971, lowered the federal voting age to 18 and prohibited voter discrimination based on age. Voting laws targeting college students usually incorporate some aspect of age, so Symm fell under the 26th.🗳
Happy Election Day (again), #Georgia! The polls haven't opened yet, but 3,093,375 Georgians have already cast ballots in the #GASenateRunoffs. That's 78% of the early vote we saw in the November general election.
A #GARunoff record 1 million Black voters cast ballots early, compared to 1.2 million in the general. However, a drop-off of only 15% is better than the 25% drop-off in early voting for whites. Over 80k and 94k Latinxs and Asian Americans have voted, already records for a runoff. 
Over 124k Georgians who didn't vote in November have already voted. An estimated 48% are white, 41% Black, 4% Latinx, and 5% Asian. This includes over 27,000 18-24 year olds. #gapol #youthvote

The story of ACRONYM started in Virginia in 2017. We knew then, as we do now, that early 💸 to reach voters online matters, and strong coordination can make a difference.
A huge reason why VA flipped this year is that so many organizations 1️⃣worked together, 2️⃣invested early and 3️⃣built smart infrastructure that will last between boom + bust election cycles.
This cycle, ACRONYM ran a Commonwealth-wide non-partisan voter registration program to bring more voters onto the rolls 🇺🇸, invested in local media infrastructure to keep voters informed 📰, and joined forces with the @vademocrats + to run a robust digital outreach program. 👩🏽💻

This research project doesn’t focus on issues. Young people care intensely about issues; that’s a given. Talking about issues vital. But things that stop them from voting aren’t about issues, they’re more about believing that votes don’t matter or perpetuate a broken system.
