Thanks @Buttarelli_G for this Op-Ed: "Big tech is still violating your #privacy" The "take-it-or-leave it" 'consent' approach shows how strongly network effects lock-in people washingtonpost.com/news/theworldp…
to the incumbent platforms. It's a paradox that the Founding Fathers in the US were fearful of accumulation of power in government but that recent successive governments have let the accumulation of power in Big Tech unchecked supposedly on the belief that competition would keep
actors in check. When #data is increasingly perceived as being an essential facility for a at least number of sectors and its dominant players, it is consequently challenging to build a service which provides the choices that competitive markets are meant to provide when
concentration of powers occurs in the private sectors as is currently the case on #BigDaa and #identity. Fortunately we have influential players like @Benioff who deals in data within an existing relationship (#CRM) and is also a prolific and successful angel able to back startup
wanting to offer an alternative. The European investment Fund (@EIB), the @bpifrance (and its equivalent in other EU countries) have a key role to play in fostering the funding of these without fearing to undermine a champion in the previous data paradigm (there are none!).
The majority of established VCswho have benefited from the exceptional return that 'surveillance capitalism' provide, will think twice before funding these emerging players (@USV and other stand out as exception rather than the norm).
Nonetheless, I remain optimistic that #GDPR accompanied by well funded innovation will shift the current data paradigm.
